Awful-always has been. My mate told me that after waiting an age to the served the manager walked behind the bar, sneezed into his hand, picked up a glass and asked what he would like to drink. My mate made his excuses and left.

If you what a drink best to avoid.

Yep, its a long pub. With the 'normal' wetherspoon costumers too. Better pubs about...
billybraggscombiboiler - 21 Apr 2013 19:22
Far better than the other spoons in town.
I really liked the unique interior most be the longest pub i have ever been in!
Food and drinks were fine.

8/10

It's a spoon! I had no expectation, I wasn't disappointed.

What is it about wetherspoons and gormless staff?
When advertising for staff, do they stipylate gormlessnees?
Do only gormless people bother to apply?
Are normal people made gormless by having to deal with Wetherspoon customers all day long?
Dr_Pangloss - 9 Jan 2011 17:57
was Ok when it first opened, but now like previous comments, overpopulated with scum
kitchenightmares - 28 Feb 2010 11:29
Lousy beer. Too noisy. Full of drunken kids. But hey - loads of tottie in skimpy clothes. 10 out of 10 :o)
maesbrae - 29 Oct 2009 15:58
Not particularly good - even for a 'spoons! Beers kept OK but the place needs a bit of a clean. Some of the staff could do with a bit of waking up as well.

Spent an hour in here tonight and it wasnt the best. The conservatory section was filthy and food on the floor from the afternoon was everywhere, the view to the church on a beautiful early spring evening, a real selling point for any establishment, was blocked by advertising cheap meals on the windows, the clientele were swearing and obnoxious, the barman told me he had been working all day and was f****d and then wouldnt accept my visa card for some bizarre reason. Seriously in need of a shake up, as are most Taunton pubs.

I would prefer Wetherspoons to charge a little more, employ a couple more staff, and perhaps discourage some of the "lesser washed" of the clientele. Having said that, the pint and food were fine when I visited, and the small number of staff were clearly doing the best they could.
fromedrinker - 2 Jan 2009 00:06
its not that bad for a wetherspoon pub, you can spend a pleasant hour or so in the conservatory bit with a reasonable meal and bottle of wine for under 15 cant be bad!
hammers101 - 3 Dec 2008 21:28
I think this pub may be getting even worse
Paris_Hilton - 10 Nov 2008 10:03
If you like your pubs to have tables full of half-eaten meals left around for hours, and long waits at the bar for an overly chilled pint, then this is your sort of pub. I don't, so I try to avoid it....I suggest you do too. Its a shame because they do stock some great guest beers.

Typical Wetherspoons, cheap and dirty
Paris_Hilton - 22 Aug 2008 12:16
We walked down east street about 9am today 24th May 08 past your pub in Taunton, and we were discusted by the amount of cigarette butts littering the pavement we had to walk round to mountain of butts to pass your pub.

toplineruk - 24 May 2008 10:04
So does that mean we won't be getting mad cow disease from this pub?
YoYo - 7 May 2008 22:42
Recently the BBC sent undercover investigators to various pubs in the west country.

They were checking out beef that was supposedly locally produced.

Tests proved that not only did some of the so called locally produce beef actually came from Botwana, but also that it wasn't even beef!

Guess which pub in Taunton these guys visited for their samples?

Horrible

The town's second wetherspoons pub. It's an enormous great cavern. As it's a wetherspoon pub I knew I was in for a long wait, but this place is slow even by spoons standards.
I don't know how many tables there are in this place possibly a hundred, I don't know, but do you think I could find a clean one?
No chance, everywhere were dirty glasses and plates, and staff standing around doing nothing.

Brahmsandliszt - 14 May 2007 21:46
It's a long time since I last went to a waterspoons pub; I avoid them like the plague. However I had arranged to meet someone and they suggested this place.
I had to wait twenty minutes to be served while the 'manager' and two other members of staff argued with a customer who was complaining about his muddy looking beer. I suspect that had the bouncers been on duty, the customer would have been ejected.
I can never figure out why weatherstones are so popular; in any other country these standards would not be tolerated, but the brits, forever the cheapskates of europe just love this crap.
Still, at least it keeps the riff raff out of other pubs.

Not too bad a place really, the drinks are cheap, the queues aren't too bad if you know how to queue and although it gets busy the atmosphere never seems bad. (Although a friend of mine did once see a guy shouting at himself in the toilet mirrors...)

As long as you're not bothered about getting squashed or queueing for a bit then it's a fairly good place to go for cheap drinks before moving onto a club.

It's also very long so it has some novelty value.

A typical Wetherspoons, and for those that don't know what a typical Wetherspoons means it means drink somewhere else. If you must go, go at 10am on a weekday because you can get a drink fairly quickly.
YoYo - 26 Dec 2006 21:12
Come on now, dont slag it. I really like the Perkin. Ok, so maybe it does get crowded on a friday or saturday night, but what do you expect? It's right in the centre of town, and near to the clubs. Also, during the day, its great! The music isn't always loud, and yes I have experienced unfriendly staff once, but thats a reflection on the silly cow, not the pub! The food isn't that bad either. And just for the record, i'm not a chav!

I got asked to leave this pub once because I took one of the books off a bookshelf and started to read it.
I think the manager must have thought I was showing off.
TA010929 - 4 Sep 2006 23:48
The Perkin is different from most pubs. Long, thin and (a 1/4 mile?) long. Stretches from one street to another. This "airport lounge" has been re-furbished, although much of the money seems to be for installing the music system. Music normally comes on at 5p.m., but if you want it quieter, check out the conservatory at the back.

People impatient to wait at the main bar can forget about the quicker - service back bar. Good drink/food, but don't expect it to be perfect.

MrBob - 22 Jun 2006 14:19
it's like watching straving ethiopians queuing for aid packages from American helicopters. queuing in here for a drink is a bit of a mission. bringa book, a tent and a freind and while away the hours whilst waiting for just one pint. only this bad on the wkd. besides that, it's cheap. and nice food. not too many chavs...
mikeyb2thagg - 30 Jun 2005 12:03
I thought this place was supposed to have been done up recently??? Boy was I wrong. Barring the pseudo patio out the back it's still the same old pub with a distinct and noticeable lack of glass collectors/table cleaners meaning you get overflowing ash trays, beer and food stained uncleared tables which remain disgusting. Even the glass collection point is overflowing to monolithic proportions which just happened to collapse last time I was in sending broken glass everywhere. Also if you're very anti-chav avoid like the plague.
anonymous - 12 May 2005 15:13
Massive. Bloody freezing. You could probably hear the pub gods wailing at this travesty of an establishment were it not for the clattering of stillettos and the squeaking noise the punters make as their ears rub together.

Don't listen to me, it's actually really nice. I failed to pull there once, a long time ago, and I'm just bitter.
