No longer a 'Spoons. Now regularly has loud music on a Saturday night, which seems to have put off more people than it attracts!

Has the usual Wetherspoons large, single room. It was fairly busy on my late weekday afternoon visit. Plenty of staff. But none of them were in a hurry to serve. Ales were Old Tom Strong Ale, JW Lees Bitter, Phoenix White Monk, Caledonian Rising Sun Pale Ale, Bridgehouse Cherry Choc Stout, Ruddles Best, Greene King Abbot & Sharps Doom Bar. Ciders were Westons Old Rosie, Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon & Thistly Whisky Cask. A pint of the latter went down very nicely. Both Wetherspoons in Bury are above average.

Reasonable JDW pub. 6/10.

Typical large, cheap spoons pub. Neither a particularly good one nor is it a particularly bad one.

I have visited the pub on several occasion and usually there's a pretty good selection of cask ales on tap. I called in yesterday afternoon (29/5/11) and found only two available? Although 5 hand pumps had clips on saying "coming soon"? What's all that about? I'm guessing no one could change a barrel? It was very busy, staff were over stretched & the beer selection was poor...but no excuse, come on "Spoons" you can do better then this, on this occasion, a big disappointment.

Certainly one of the better Spoons I've ever been in. 10 (possibly 12 - I can't count that high!) pumps with some interesting small brewers. Tried a couple of pints yesterday morning from Greenfield Brewery at 1.80 and both in excellent condition. Service was fine even though there ere quite a few breakfasts being served at the same time.

We often call in here for tea when visiting the nearby Bury Met. There's usually a selection of 6 or 7 guest beers in addition to the Spoons 3 regular ales. The beer quality has always been good and the staff efficient and friendly. One of the better JDW houses.

I think this place looks a lot better since the refurb although it would've been nice if the toilets had been sorted, seems to have the best team of staff I've seen in there for a while as well. Don't know why people expect so much from a pub in bury especially from a chain- from the spoons I've been in this is definitely one of the better ones!

Scruffy but not really rough Wetherspoons. Service varies as does the quality of the beer. Can be ok on its best day but sometimes there are no guest ales available. Improved somewhat since Chris, the longtime manager, moved on.

It's a standard Wetherspoons, decent food and drink, relatively cheap.
pavorossi - 3 Feb 2009 15:31
For f'ks sake, it's a JDW! Don't expect silver service, just decent beer at a decent price.

Busy at Friday lunchtimes, as mentioned below, but still get served reasonably quickly. Nearly always a gathering of fogies at lunch and you have to battle past the cancer convention at the door to get in.

For all the bustle it has a decent atmosphere.

agree with terrylunn - this is a busy, but reasonable Wetherspoons
oftenscore6 - 19 Apr 2008 00:15
Do not agree with most of the other comments. Maybe it is a bit unbourgeois but the beer is great and very inexpensive. Friday lunchtime - very busy and good atmosphere.

This place is like a wino convention

Tidying up......this place needs to discover this simple but effective art.Legend has it you can wait for up to 3 days to get served here

As it says above, '..reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously..' but Wetherspoons' head office really should. The persistantly annoying habit of displaying a whole row of pump clips for beers which aren't available has become a minor irritation compared with the cleanliness of the customer areas and poor training the staff have received. Good things happen at Wetherspoons pubs - take a look at the in-house magazine though I doubt if this pub in it's current form will be featured.

This is really crap pub.Has the usual sterile wetherspoons feel about it - ie has less atmoshpere than the moon.In addtion it always seems to be filthy - Vile looking carpet and plates, glasses and ashtrays that looked like they'd been there all week. The staff seem disinterestd and surly (being pestered for my glass at 11.05pm just topped it off).Terrible.
Swaledale - 29 Jul 2006 17:52
I have to agree with the recent reviewers about the Peel. The place wants a good clean and with only a couple of exceptions the staff have no interest in what they're doing and everything seems such a chore for them.

I work in Bury Town centre and see people waiting out side to get their first drink in here at around 11am, nice to see what my taxes pay for!!!
People just used to hang round drinking out of brown bags in bus station or Kay Gardens but now they can keep warm in here
Dirty place, people and cheap/nasty drinks

JULIEANNE3 - 21 Apr 2006 17:05
Cheap ale .. and it shows, no atmosphere, scruffy unclean tables, dirty glasses every where, cant get to the bar because tight arses and students are in there for the cheap ale, part of the pub crawl so must give it some credit for that, its packed on thursdays (giro day) although it could be improved 100% if they just put some background music on and for some reason a always feel unclean when im in there

Definately a lovely little pub. Friendly staff, good food and a great night out. Try going on a Thursday - it will be packed out but always an amazing atmosphere!
anonymous - 14 Oct 2005 16:45
The staff are always very friendly here and the food is always of a high standard. Private boots mean that I can enjoy a quiet time with my friends and the larger, open plan spaces mean great times at night. The drinks are the cheapest by far in the surrounding area. I would say that this is one of, if not THE best pub in Bury and would reccommend it to anyone.
bury86 - 14 Oct 2005 16:26
Went in for some lunch on the 17/05/05. the food was terrible the staff were unhelpful won,t be going in again for food Better off eating in the Knowsley as the sreve good food, only going in now as part of our crawl round Bury now.
anonymous - 20 May 2005 10:59
Us Deafies say a good place for a cheap pint and to start in for all to meet up before start pub crawl round the Real Bury town centre Staff are okay but when busy it takes a long time to get served might not be best pub in town but good start off crawl from the place
deafbulldog - 27 Apr 2005 13:09
Being a Wetherspoons the beer is cheap, the food is of a decent standard and there's no loud music (in fact they don't play music at all). Great place to meet up before going somewhere else in Bury, probably not somewhere you'd want to spend the whole night in though.

Not the best Weatherspoons ive been to! A few characters inside. The place is outdated compared to the other weatherspoons. (Manchester City Centre, Altrincham,Sale etc) All on one level. No private booths or comfortable seating.Needs a complete over-haul! On the other hand, in true weatherspoons tradition, does do the cheap drink thing, so a good place to start your night. And the food is alright with a low price tag. By far, not the best bar in Bury!
