The Savoy was my final stop on my Monday evening visit to Swindon. It's a large Wetherspoon's, the town's oldest. It's an old cinema set on various levels with plenty of space. Being quite old, it does have a more worn feel than most branches. 15 handpulls serve a good range of ales. Yesterday, these were Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharp's Doom Bar, Adnams Broadside, Cairngorm Trade Winds, Original Whitstable Brewery Pearl Of Kent, Titanic Captain Smith's, Salopian Darwin's Origin, Jenning's Sneck Lifter, Exmoor Stag, Battledown Saison & White Horse Stable #4. By the time I was leaving, Purple Moose Dark Side of the Moose was also on. As part of the cider festival, they had Weston's Old Rosie, Purbeck Katy Perry & Dandy Dab, Thatcher's Stan's Big Apple, Sandford Orchards Merry Legs, Hunt's Barn Screecher, Malvern Cider Company Malvern Gold, Rich's Farmhouse Cider & Venton's Apple Vice. A decent end to the evening.

Sorry, spent enough time in airport lounges to know that they ain't my favourite places.

That said, the beer/cider is cheap, the range is wide and not badly kept.

Probably the best Spoons in town. Beer range is usually good and the place does have some character (being an old cinema). A fair walk up through the shops from the station but always worth a look in.

25 years ago I used to watch films here, it was just about the only cinema in Swindon, the multi screens are out of the centre nowadays and this is a large JDW, the usual Wetherspoons formula but 16 real beers were on, 6 of them real ciders & perry. Will return.

Been in a couple of times recently. This is a really typical 'spoons, but why oh why does it take so long to get served?? The barstaff are always busy, they all seem to be pouring drinks, but the queue just never goes away.
decent selection of ales (as you'd expect), a couple of handpump ciders (as you'd expect).
For me this is the lesser of the 3 Wetherspoons in the Town centre. Better service and (in my opinion) friendlier staff in the Groves, nicer surroundings in the Sir Dan.
Sorry Saveloy!!

Popped in mid afternoon today, seems to have had a change of management, much friendlier staff and a nice selection of real ales, well done, keep up the good work.

went in late afternoon quiet busy. notice the steps down to the lower bar area. the pint was ok. but not one of the better spoons, in fact along with manchester piccadily is the worse jd i have been in. if in swindon again and wanted a spoons would used the sir daniel arms which i last used last time

A horrible cellar of a pub - unless you want to sit outside with the numerous alchoholics who are drawn to the place like flies to excrement.

Bar a mile long with two vary vague and confused barpersons on. They serve whoever shouts loudest or looks like they are in immenent danger of collapse due to lack of alchohol.

Food is cheap and mostly edible. That's all.

18 handpumps, some doubled up. Not surprisingly (and despite it being 8pm on a Friday evening) there were 7 "coming soons" and all of these were the ales you'd most want to have, including some of the elusive scottish ones. How come Ruddles and Abbot and Pedigree never have "coming soon" on them??????? The Ramsbury Gold was good,as was the Tanglefoot had by the entourage.

With 3 Wetherspoons and a beer festival, Swindon seemed a good place to take the wife shopping. The other 2 had a lame selection, but the Savoy was superb, with about 15 Festival ales and the perry. All of the beers were in good condition, and the third-pint tasting meant I could try a large number of the ales, whilst still having pints of my favourites. Service was good, and the manageress always got extra staff serving when a queue built up, a good example that other JDW bars would do well to follow.

Very good for a Wetherspoons - clean tables, plenty of staff behind the bar and they were serving customers with a smile. Beer quality was decent also. Well done.

I must admit I hadn't been in for a couple of years until the beer fest and it seemed ok, interesting selection of ales, but also with an unwelcoming gaggle of drunks and na'er do wells sitting around the entrance. Beer quality fine and service quite good by W*nkerspoon standards. Have you ever noticed how there is always a tattoed waster on crutches standing at the bar of every one of JD's pubs?

They had a beer festival just inside the door & virtually took all the handpumps off which confused some people. A welcoming pub which had some very unusual beers; a Finnish porter, Box Steam porter & Titanic Velvet Curtain which had vanilla in it amongst others. A good experience!

I was pleasantly surprised by my latest visit. A very good choice of real ales, with 5 good guest beers. Unlike rorypatchway, my food was very hot, probably a first in a Wetherspoons! The staff were really friendly and helpful, and this place has definitely improved. Maybe it's the competition from the other 2 Wetherspoons just down the road!
Dylanwing - 29 Mar 2009 10:07
Is this the meeting place for the AA, because them seem to be sat outside all the time.....lol
swindonkat - 11 Dec 2008 14:43
Good range of beers but food cold.
rorypatchway - 19 Oct 2008 19:27
Used to be a lively place to go on the weekend to meet your mates, good cheap food and drink, always kept nice and tidy....don't know whats happened but it's rubbish now....full of pikeys and under age...very dodgy!
sarah87 - 5 Oct 2008 18:03
Very standard Wetherspoons, cheap beer and decent food. Not one of the better ones for real ale choice, although the quality is OK.
Dylanwing - 8 Jun 2008 15:18
Come on everyone who has called into the savoy recently, let newbies know what its really like! Any pub that you go in,lets have it right, its what you can make of it! If you want cheap beer and well priced food that is value for money, the savoy is a pretty good place to go. On a whole, the staff are more pleasant than a few wetherspoons that ive called into, and you cant choose the punters, they,as are we,after a cheap nite out,so you hav to make the most of it! Great place to meet up before hitting the nitelife!
anonymous - 20 Jan 2007 00:28
The larger of the two Wetherspoons, the Savoy manages to be fairly busy mid-week - in complete
contrast to most of Swindon's town centre bars/pubs which only come alive at the weekend.

Their secret? Cheap, decent beer, a relaxed atmostphere and food when you want it.

Andrew_Smith - 5 Dec 2006 11:02
wheres the music???
jayden_leigh - 28 Nov 2006 15:45
Got to agree with you wineo. It's not a bad Wetherspoons. Decent range of ales & ciders. The look of the clientele can be a bit off puting, much the same as most 'spoons, but Ive never seen or heard of any real trouble, unlike a lot of the downtown establishments.
Overall nothing much to recommend it, unless you are a Wetherspoons fan, but no real reason to avoid it, unless you're not.
SW6 - 23 Aug 2006 10:35
Not a bad Spoons! Could probably do with a face lift. Food always pretty good. You get what you pay for!

Wineo - 23 Aug 2006 09:42
This is by far one of the best spoons I have been in!the staff are fab well 2 espcially the 2 irish people where fab!

I also went to the groves and too say the least theres no comparison what a dump full of chavs and it smells, also the beer garden was full of huge insects and chavs..nothing clean horrid staff looked scruffy

The savoy was by far the best
anonymous - 8 Aug 2006 20:36
Swindon's "nasty" 'spoons. Smoky and dreary, full of pikeys. Go for the Grove instead.
jason - 2 Jan 2005 17:20
Better Wetherspoons that the Grove
