user reviews of the Churchill Inn, Churchill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I booked into this country pub for an overnight accommodation, evening meal and breakfast. What a mistake - the bedroom door didnt fit the frame so wouldnt close, it had no lock anyway, dirty carpets, there were no curtains (only a broken blind), wind blowing through a gap in the frame and no efforts to block out the traffic noise or street light streaming into the room.

There was a dog wandering around upstairs, the stairs themselves being extremely steep (which would not be an issue except it was overhung by a storage shelf where items could easily have fallen and there was no sign of a handrail for safety), the bathroom was down the corridor and unclean, plus (given the overall cleanliness of the place) I decided to forgo the evening meal and breakfast for fear of the kitchen being in the same unhygienic state.

Somewhere I will never book again!

great pub, we in the Real Ale Questers Cycling club (both of us), fell off. . . excellently kept beers, one and only criticism from last visit - tablecloths ? what's that all about......?!

How do you know I'm a fairy, are you a medium? I swear on my chin I will have you barred. That's the last birthday you'll have in my establishment.

No you don't, and you should not be commenting on a pub which you don't even know.
Bugger off, there's a good fairy.

8 of us visited the Churchill Inn for dinner for an informal evening to celebrate our son's birthday.

I can't stress just how brilliant the staff were. The pub was quite busy but they were so helpful and attentive if felt like we were the only people there; I've paid more for just my meal than it cost for our entire party and not had such good service.

The meals were cooked fresh and were very good value. The 2 for 12 meals were tasty and generous measures and served piping hot. We also had some steaks from their grill menu and they were cooked perfectly and they also provided lots of additional vegetable side dishes that we didn't even order and they didn't charge for.

All in all, we had a lovely evening and I wil lbe recommending the pub to anyone who wants good honest home cooked food at reasonable prices with first class service.

Thatcher's Gold on tap too!

A fair sized pub divided in to a public bar at the front and an area more geared up for dining at the rear. Theres an old flagstone floor throughout, with the exception of a couple of raised, carpeted areas. Theres a few black timber beams about, and some wooden cladding on parts of the ceiling. The dining area right at the back has a wooden arched roof which is a nice feature. Old beer barrels feature prominently in the dcor, with a number of them suspended from timbers, set in to the walls or simply used as tables.

The bar area has a pool table, fruit machine and a small TV perched up in a corner. This seems to attract a few locals. The dining area at the rear feels slightly plusher, although the large stainless steel carvery counter wastes a lot of space. This wasnt in use on our visit, so is presumably reserved for Sunday lunchtimes. There was also a vertical display cabinet for the desserts which seems a bit 70s.

Service at the bar was chaotic and disorganised. On both occasions I had to wait far longer than I should have. That said, the staff were friendly and helpful, and had the good grace to apologise for keeping me waiting which is more than you get in a lot of pubs. One lady in particular insisted on calling everyone sweetheart or darling.

There was an extensive choice of food on the menu, and a large specials board as well. Confusingly though, some of the specials were not actually specials at all as they were also printed on the main menu. Similarly the menu listed various dishes that were available as a 2 for 12 deal, and this too was also chalked up on a board. But again, the listing on the board didnt quite correspond with what was printed on the menu, with some dishes being the same and others different. Food was very tasty and a generous portion, but seemed expensive. 12 for a bowl of pasta in a pub is a lot whichever way you look at it.

Beers on tap were GWBs Maiden Voyage, Butcombe and Doom Bar. The latter two were served straight from barrels racked up behind the bar. Ciders were Blackthorn, Natch and Thatchers Gold.

Are we promoting the pub, or some unknown wannabe?

I used this place on a regular basis when stationed at RAF Locking down the road, and having read this, I'll return to check it out again.

You could easily miss the Churchill Inn as you pass through Churchill on your way to Bristol Airport, but it's well worth visiting.

They have 2 real ales (Greene King Abbot and Butcombe bitter when I visited), both at 2-40 and both served straight from the cask. (There is a special, cooled area behind the bar where 4 barrels are kept.) I only tried the Abbot, which was delicious and served just the way I like it - full glass with just a lacing of froth at the top.

There are two distinct areas, the main (smoking) part of the bar and a no-smoking area which is used as a restaurant - although you can eat or drink in either side if you want.

The food is exceptionally good. The French chef does a full la carte menu, but if you want something a bit simpler and cheaper there is a good selection of '2 for 10-95' meals. For the pastry lover who despairs at the typical pub version of a pie (usually no more than a stew with a ridiculously thick slab of puff pastry perched on the top), I can report that the Beef and Guinness pie is a proper pie, has a thin, shortcrust pastry top, sides and bottom and is delicious.

There are many bed & breakfast places in Churchill, which is only 10 minutes from Bristol Airport, so if you've got an early flight consider staying in Churchill and having a meal and a few pints at the Churchill Inn before you fly.

Not been in a couple of years - so it it still going?
Exceptional - there is no sign its a pub from the outside, indoors has old furniture and loads of atmosphere.
Real Ales, open fires and scrumpy territory.
I recall one special beer - "Old Bastard" I think....
