user reviews of the Hare and Hounds Hotel, Timperley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After reading the bad reviews on here about the Hare and Hounds I feel I need to say something, I am surprised to read so many negative reviews about the place. We go to the Hare and Hounds on a weekly basis and have had no problems, the food is nice, the portions of meat are generous and you can help yourself to as much vegetables as you want. There have been times when it is busy and you do have to wait for service (no different from anywhere else) but there are times when it isn't as busy and the service is good. We have never seen any gangs or groups of youths hanging around (as I have read in some of the other reviews) and the place is not over run with children. If something hasn't been right and we have mentioned it, the staff do their best to put it right, and we have never felt that the staff are rushing us.

We have been going regularly but the service is poor and they re too stingey with the food, they obviously play on the fact they are a carvery and think they can be rude and unhelpful to customers. Service gets worse everytime we,ve been and much quein with only 2 bar staff, now kids are back at school its full price instead of kids eatin for free. We will be takin our custom somewhere more cheerful where the staff look happy too ty.

AWFUL!

Don't bother going here. We walked in to find no one there to seat us so we thought we would just find a table ourselves but to be rudely told to get back and wait for someone to seat us.

AWFUL VEGGIE OPTION, DONT BOTHER IF YOU'RE VEGETARIAN.
when the average veggie nut roast isnt available, they expect you to be satisfied with having LASAGNE or CHILLI with your carvery!!

I asked for tap water, for it never to arrive.

The place is just too hot, they dont seem to have any air con- which is just great in the height of summer.

The serivce at the cavery counter isnt great either, they dislike giving more than one yorkshire pudding per person.
However, the deserts are nice, but by the time i was finished i was so annoyed by the service that it was just impossible to enjoy it.

My conclusion- this place is CHEAP but not CHEERFUL.

I visited mid-week and it was very quiet. A chain pub atmosphere with a few real ales on. But it closed at 9.30pm and was mostly empty by then with the doors locked to prevent any new punters entering. Probably good for food earlier, but not really a drinkers pub at all. Avoid this if you just fancy a pint.
FlimFlamMachine - 24 Feb 2011 09:49
Glad to see I am not alone. The food is pallatable (just) and yes, you get what you pay for, but the service is DIRE. I recently had the audacity to ask for some vanilla ice cream (instead of strawberry) for my daugher and was met by a torrent of abuse by the 'manageress'. Over a scoop of bloody Wall's. Totally unbelievable. Anyway, at leastI'm notserving pints in a soup kitchen for a fraction above the minimum wage on a weekend. Think on spray-tan lady!
salenomad - 16 Nov 2009 20:24
I am surprised to see all the bad comments about this pub, its great we love roast dinners and go in all the time. The veg and meat is always fresh and tasty - love it. 3.99 for a meal. Less for kids, desserts are great we always have the super sundae he he. We have never been kicked out early and we go 3 to 4 times a month.

PLEASE TURN THIS PUB BACK INTO A PUB. MARSTONS OR WHOEVER YOU ARE THAT OWN IT YOU HAVE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE THIS VENUE A RESTUARANT FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS AND NO-ONE LIKES IT. TURN IT BACK INTO A PUB, PUT THE TV'S BACK IN, GET ENOUGH STAFF BEHIND THE BAR AND WATCH US DRINK. THAT IS THE SERVICE A PUB IS SUPPOSED TO OFFER A COMMUNITY. IF I WANT A MEAL I WILL GO TO MY MUMS, SHE COOKS A MUCH BETTER ROAST THAN YOU LOT ANYWAY.
Phil_Smith - 23 Jan 2008 16:53
First and foremost, since its latest rehashing as a Taverners Carvery the Hare & Hounds isn't a pub anymore. Howvever, contrary to all the self-delusion and arrogant posturing of its management it isn't a restaurant either. In truth it's a glorified soup kitchen primarily offering Sunday roasts to the starving masses lured from far afield sink estates by cheap food which is mind-numbingly predictable in choice. There are just three roast joints on offer and they are exactly the same three every single day of the year.

This is definitely the place to be if you have a real passion for standing in line in overcrowded self-service cafeterias. Once you've waited to be served with a meal-ticket at the excuse for a bar you can head for the carvery area and get into the really serious queuing. Eventually you get your meagre ration of roast handed to you by someone dressed up as a chef. From thereon in you can stack your plate to the ceiling with everything else. And when that's all done you finally get to sit down amongst other like-minded folk troughing down food as if there was a cash prize for finishing and leaving in the shortest possible time. Meanwhile the local old-age pensioners look on in total bewilderment.

You could still enjoy a drink in the spacious beer garden in the summer though but be sure to go on a cloudy day or take a big hat with you because all the sun umbrellas have been removed from the tables to actively discourage you from doing any such thing.

As for "Beer In The Evening" you can forget it. Well before the food stops at 9PM the place is deserted and smells exactly as you would expect it to. In the unlikely event that the doors haven't already been locked to keep you out you will probably be cajoled into leaving well before 11PM just so the staff can finish cleaning up and scarper off home as early as possible.

Marstons couldn't have screwed up the Hare & Hounds more if they'd tried.

It has become a veritable "let 'em in, get 'em fed and get 'em out again" hell hole of a place with a unique couldn't care less attitude to customers thrown in for good measure.

Absolutely dire.

This pub is the best in the world, they have a great new head chef called Dominic Thompson. He has turned this pub around. He has a history of working in greaat places and now hes come here. he has worked all over Manchester. It's now a carvary at 4.49 Mon - Sat and on Sun 5.59 I can't make it at home for that.

Went in last nite, looks nice, decent pint of bitter (in a proper pint mug), food looked OK. Main gripes are the number of teenagers hanging around the entrance and using the toilets and the fact that a large part of the refurb budget has been spent on an outside area for smokers.
More of a place to eat than somewhere to spend the evening.
boddies_drinker - 13 Jul 2007 12:21
Not a ffriendly pub my daughter was desperate for the toilet on her way past Ive always said ask in pubs as its safer than public toilets this pub said no as its for customers only then refused to serve a coke so they could use toilet I will now be telling everyone i know to avoid this pub go to the quarry bank or the stonemasons much nicer staff and more helpfull
ladysmudge - 5 Nov 2006 17:50
Took my family out to the Hare and Hounds for Sunday dinner and it was superb. Best Sunday Roast I have had in this area and since it only worked out at about a fiver per person because of the 2 4 1 offer it was great.

In reply to the post below it seems like a shame. The new menu (which was obviously in the process of being rolled out when that couple went)is great and there is so much choice.

The kids loved their food as did I and my wife.

We shall certainly be visiting more frequently!
anonymous - 5 Sep 2006 18:42
took wife out for a meal here, what a joke!
1st. Sorry we aint got no beer just lager
2nd we are changing menu so we have not much left just whats on the specials board except the ones with meat on,we have no meat left at all.
so it was straight out the door never to return

anonymous - 18 Aug 2006 17:16
What a lovely pub! The beer garden is huge and full on a busy weekend with such nice weather.

AND the food was great which is a huge plus in my opinion. Good beer, good staff, good food. What more do you need in a pub?!?

I really recommend a visit to anyone who hasn't been.
meatloaf1 - 2 Jul 2006 10:17
I have just returned from the Hare and Hounds, where I have enjoyed a superb family meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, the staff welcoming and efficient. We enjoyed a choice from both the main menu and also a fantastic specials board and the quality of food was exceptional in all cases. As all the meals were included in the 2-4-1 deal this visit was incredable value for money. I look forward to returning soon and could only score this pub/restaurant 10/10.
smegreg - 23 May 2006 18:24
No big screen, no table footy, no dart board. The pub has tried to reinvent itself as a restaurant. Do you really think the locals want to eat out every night in this pub? Don't think so. Biggest school boy error of all is getting rid of the big screens. Did no one tell you the world cup is on next month? The pub would have made a huge amount of money.

Oh dear oh dear. Badly advised IMO!
Redmeister - 8 May 2006 12:12
The information on this pub is very out of date. I've been here a few times since it re-opened earlier this year(06) It's now a 'Two for One' pub offering good food and wines at very reasonable prices. The staff are friendly, it's spacious and nicely decorated. There's no TV, which for some of us is a blessing! A good place for families to go and friends to meet up.
droenna - 7 May 2006 19:25
Not much atmosphere here. Lots of seating areas, so you can usually stay away from smokers if you want.

Pub quiz isn't too difficult on a Thursday either.

Reasonable selection of lager and wines.

Currently closed for refurb.
budda - 2 Mar 2006 16:56
This is a good pub to go to if you fancy a quiet drink with a friend or your girlfriend
whitedog - 6 Feb 2006 22:13
I agree with all the other reviews BUT the positives are that it's good for taking kids plus it's good for watching footie as there are numerous screens. There's a separate section (non-smoking) for food & kids and in summer there's the bowling green that's safe for kids. The downside is it's a Pikey dive and the food is microwave city.
marcusmuck - 4 Dec 2005 01:47
agree with the last comment, hare and hounds used to be a great pub, 10/15 years ago, great pint of marstons, stick to the quarry and the stonies, excellent pubs, good beer
vicgod47 - 27 Aug 2005 22:42
A real dive, used to be a decent boozer around ten years ago. You can really see the difference now. I went in there in the day there were three bar staff on and they stood there for around five minutes chatting while I waited to be served. When I was served they made it quite obvious they resented me interupting the little chat. Totally at odds with how it used to be. Far better pubs in the area, stick to the Stonies, Quarry or the Moss.
BigJapp2 - 2 Aug 2005 14:15
Quite possibly the least atmospheric pub in Altrincham. It's location means that it is a magnet for 'Wivvys' who catch the 371 bus to the salubrious surrounds of Timperley.
The problem with the Hare is that it has lost its charm. The room from the main entrance looks like the foyer of one of the those amusement arcades you see at service stations. The tacky football pictures also need dumping.
The barmaids are grumpy (on account of having no permanant landlord and being forced by the brewery to take mistakes out of their own wages!)

On the plus side - the bowling green is turned into a beer garden in the summer.
Peanuts123 - 15 Jun 2005 11:55
Used to go this pub all the time many years ago cant stand it now over priced and dead most times I say bring back the old DJ get them Rolf Harris songs beating :)
ladysmudge - 4 May 2005 21:31
Patchy food quality - sometimes ok , sometimes awful.
Garry1603 - 16 Apr 2005 13:11
PLEASE BE ADVISED: No baseball caps are allowed, and there is a smart/casual dress code(No scallie/tracksuite/pants in socks style clothing!-you know the type!) The Hare and Hounds has been re-vamped and designed for the more classier (in comparison)/decent type of folk that are left in this world!
Scallies and hooligans should find themselves a venue thats more suitable and designed for them. (Such as 'The Broomwood Pub or Youth Centre' on the 'Gone down hill-Broomwood Estate. Or The Bulls Head/Cuckoo's nest in Sale where there are no dress codes in place - or somewhere similar)
If more and more decent people start drinking in nice pubs such as the Hare, than the Scallies will hopefull get bored and feel out of place-instead of it being the other way round!

Good boozer for locals and visitors alike. Worth checking out. 8/10
anonymous - 25 Feb 2005 20:25
Can't comment on the night time side of the 'Hare and Hounds' as i havn't been in at night for about 4 years! (back then i wouldn't reccomend drinking in there at night-if the scallies inside don't get you-the ones at the side of the shops/chippy (in the carpark) will!)
*Don't know whether they have sorted this problem out yet or not*

I do however HIGHLY recommend the 'Hare and Hounds' for a day visit though. I have been in a few times now during the day with my little lad and partner. The pub itself is really big (with the pub and bar at the front and a large restaurant styled raised seating area at the back)plus a huge beer garden to the rear. Children are very much welcome - in the eating area only.

This is ok though as it is a NO SMOKING zone in the raised food area.

The food is reasonably priced-with offers on from time2time, and is really nice. The service is brilliant, and the girls working there are extremely polite, friendly and helpful.Tables are nicely spaced out-with loads of room for buggies. They supply high chairs, and will also gladly heat your babies bottle without hesitation.

There are TWO lots of customer toilets. One at the pub end-one at the food end. They are extremely clean and smell quite nice! The postmix is a bit watered down-and wheelchair users will have a problem accessing the raised food area as there are three steps on either end to get up and down.

Other than that- Timperley's 'Hare and Hounds' is certainly worth a visit-especially if looking for somewhere to eat and drink during the day.
Only a 10 mins walk from Timperley Village and about the same from Altrincham Town Centre (Cheshire/Greater Manchester) (A short 5 min walk to 'Altrincham Golf Course and driving range')

BASED ON THE DAYTIME ONLY: I RATE THIS PUB 9/10
DjLee - 25 Feb 2005 20:07
The Hare used to be my local but went into decline early last year, At the moment they are in the process of appointing a new landlord. With the other reviews i really wouldn't say you feel threatened in there. Its a normal local pub which has a good quiz night on thursdays.
There were a few scallies but now they have a smart/Casual dress code, most of them have disappeared back to their holes.

Overall good pub, way too expensive though. Bar maid last night was a bit of a biatch with me.
Ludders - 25 Feb 2005 13:56
Frequented by far to many losers.
The proprieters should be made responsible for the behaviour of the yobs that drink in here, maybe then they would not let so many in.
Visit at your peril.
Warby - 4 Nov 2004 14:41
Awful pub since landlords changed a few years back. Always scruffy (despite refit), rude bar staff, and rough clientele. Added to the fact it's the most expensive pub for miles around, avoid.
Paul - 24 Oct 2004 13:06
Quality pub too many thugs using abusive language and threatening behaviour especially after football matches. I always feel intimidated when I go in there.
Liam Pimblott - 10 Sep 2004 16:17
The new changes have the nicer customer in mind. A new dress code and id policy is helping to change the clientelle of the hare to make it more welcome to a variety of people. The food, although some way from excellent, has improved recently.
frank - 9 Sep 2004 00:25
This pub has declined massively since the late 80s early 90s. Dont be surprised to see tumbleweeds blowing across the deserted seating areas. With its tacky drink offer posters and mediocre-microwaved food, it definitely caters for the downmarket punter. Glasses and half empty plates of food litter the tables; dont expect a clean environment for a quiet drink. The once proud bowling green area is now littered with discarded cigarettes and peoples rubbish. To try and increase custom, you can now see bouncy castles and tacky family days. To be avoided during football matches as its packed with rowdy all day drinkers. They do a quiz on Thursday, where you get the chance to win a gallon of watery lager. The cost to enter is 50 pence per person which buys you a lottery ticket to enter Play your cards right. They never seem to give any money away (you get the impression its heavily stacked in the landlords favour). To sum up a shadow of its former self.
Former local punter - 22 Aug 2004 14:06
The food situation at this pub needs sorting out. If you expect to get something to eat in your lunch hour you will be sorely disappointed. We left after waiting 45 minutes for a bacon bap. The beer's still good though, so drink here and eat somewhere else.
Nige - 30 Jul 2004 14:06
Still a scruffy place despite the over pubified wood & brass late 90's style refit. It's sadly let down by the scruffs they serve there who don't mind swearing as part of the normal vocabulary. Obviously the price increase was to try to get these people to go elsewhere. Once a pub has a reputation for being scruffy it is hard to shake off.
Andrew C - 21 Jun 2004 11:56
I went today with my family. What class. The food that was on offer for my over fussy family was great. The day out was a pleasure. We will be using this as a regular...well done
Mike and Mandy Fendley - 9 May 2004 18:38
The pub has never been the same since Jim and Francis left in the 80,s. A lack of atmosphere and over expensive but good beer garden since doing away with the bowling green
Mike H - 10 Feb 2004 20:10
Its ace to work there. A good laugh and the locals are all so friendly makin work so much more enjoyable
anonymous - 26 Jan 2004 21:03
Banks' has gone down to about 1.87, presumably after some complaints. Still pricey though.
Nige - 20 Oct 2003 17:17
Just been in for the first time after the refurb. Can't believe the prices have gone up so much, may have to remortgage to buy a pint.
BigJapp2 - 11 Oct 2003 12:13
After seeing it, I'm not too sure about the 'refurbishment' either. The beer's still great, but at 1.92 for a pint of Banks' I'm not sure if it's worth it!
Nige - 11 Oct 2003 11:26
Have to say in comparison with the Moss Trooper and the King George, what has happened to the Hare and Hounds can hardly be classed as "refurbishment"
Always handy after a game of 5-a-side if the lacrosse club bar is busy
boddies_drinker - 7 Oct 2003 16:45
This pub is closed for the next month while refurbishments are carried out. God knows where we're going to go for our lunchtime bevvy now..
Nige - 8 Sep 2003 13:31
Not too bad a place, decent food, decent beer. Got too agree with the comments below, there are far too many scrotes going in these days. You can tell them by their baseball caps.....
BigJapp2 - 12 Aug 2003 15:10
I give up. Anyway, the pub's pretty good, except that it usually takes an age to get served.
Nige - 5 Aug 2003 08:01
Horrible ,boring pub (the no baceball caps whats all that about? you cant tell us how to dress its like called illigal) dont waste your time by going i wont be doing it again!
baceball cap fan - 4 May 2003 15:02
nice pub. nice surroundings. good food albeit a touch expensive
