This is the 'Crooked Surgeon', its pants !

Don't wanna sound like a whingeing Pom, but... TV was on Sky Sport at FULL volume, place was full of geezers bawling at the big screen (never understood the point of that) and their full range of draught ale was... London Pride! Which came up like mud. Onward, onward...

when i went it was still the hogshead and did a deal of 4 pints of stella for a tenner!
haven't been since though, and that deal probably finished pretty quick!
unclesam - 9 Oct 2007 18:40
Paid 3.40 for a pint of stella!

Nice but a bit pricy for what is basically a pub

Now called The Crooked Surgeon - "crooked" being the operative word. 3 for a pint of Greene King IPA. Needless to say, I told them to f*** off. Avoid like the plague - places like these need to go out of business, and quick.
mrshrubber - 12 Feb 2007 15:05
Full of tourists and prats like the rest of Leicester Square.

Those who live and work in London and can read and write avoid this whole area like the plague - and quite rightly too

As the original Hogshead, this used to be quite a good place to stop off just a stone's throw away from Leicester Square. Atmosphere went down and prices went up when the format was 'modernised', and this trend has only got worse since the latest revamp into the 'Crooked Surgeon'. Example - London Pride served too cold at 3.25 a pint - there are many other places nearby where you get better for less...

A Wonderful atmosphere with YUMMY food and friendly staff! Will certainly be going again soon. (In fact next week when im meeting friends!)

Yesterday was my first visit to this pub since the name change. I liked it before, though it certainly wasnt anything wonderful. The refurbishment is very nice. The place has more of a modern feel to it and is pleasant enough. However, I paid 3.30 for a pint of Fosters, which I find absolutely disgusting. Leicester square the location may be, but there is need for it all the same. I think a pint of London Pride sets you back about 4! If you don't mind these sorts of prices, then I'd say this is a decent enough place to visit. For me though? No.

Popped in there for a couple of drinks last week after a meal (went in there last when it was the Hog's Head & always liked it..) & it was refurbed well.
Still not enough seats but done up nicely & bar staff are friendly.
Music used to be good but didn't notice it at all this time. That was one of the big plus's that I liked about it! As always with centre of London bars, always watch your handbag as people that tend to drink here seem to be like me on this occasion - 'pop in for a quick couple'. Basically alright & I'd go here again.

I went in there yesterday to see what it was like after the refurb. The pub is now called the "Crooked Surgeon". Its still the same layout with two floors. A member of staff told me it is still basically the same pub with the same staff but the prices have gone slightly up. The decor is a lot more stylish/classy. I prefered the old HH myself and wont be visiting here again.

surounded by knocking shops and just on the skirts of chinatown , ive been here quite a few times never really had a bad pint here , but it does get busy at times , wouldnt trust leaving a bag of dog shit in here as some thieving git would have it away , but considering the pubs/bars on the square this is about the best in the area and one of the cheapest .
romfordir - 6 Jul 2006 19:26
I really enjoyed Hogs but I walked past the other day and it has been refurbished - its now called a different name and I have not had a chance to visit.
casual66 - 27 May 2006 16:06
I know I'll probably get torrents of abuse for this but I don't think it's that bad of a pub.

The service that I've received has always been decent, the barstaff that I've encountered have always been extremely approachable and friendly and the table service that they offer in the back section of the pub makes a nice alternative to shoe horning yourself to the bar at the busier times.

The food though is atrocious - they served my wife chips with a roast dinner??? What the hell is that about - in their defence once we had complained they gave us a full refund.
CLFINAL2005 - 3 May 2006 10:13
one of the most pointless places in london its a cr*p brand as it is but this one takes some beating.
juzza - 29 Mar 2006 12:29
An appalling pub. Hogsheads can be pretty bad anyway, but this one is shocking - noisy, dirty, expensive, and if you want a pub where you are going to get your bag nicked, this is target #1.

avoid at all costs..
TheGP - 29 Jan 2006 20:11
A pretty trendy place. Nice Decor and nice layout for live sports. Realtivley cheap for London as well
casual66 - 23 Jan 2006 17:33
Can get quite loud there on a Saturday night when there's a DJ there and live football. It was good to have Bombardier at 1 a pint but would prefer to go there during the daytime.
wezmiester - 8 Nov 2005 13:30
One of the worst pubs in the country. I would advice anyone to give this one a miss. Extremely unfriendly staff who have nothing but contempt for the customer.
noglea - 30 Oct 2005 11:41
Not a bad pub at all. If you are around usual touristy haunts of Piccadilly, Trafalgar square, etc, its a great place to rest your feet and down a pint. Ignore the cr@p about it being a practical joke for tourists. Anyone who can use the term 'ferociously mediocre' proves themselves an idiot by default.
Marshy54 - 21 Oct 2005 23:09
a practical joke played on unwitting tourists
tanderson7 - 5 Sep 2005 10:38
A modern style pub. Good for a quick bite to eat and a nice pint of London Pride ale. The staff seem ok and prices are average.

Quite a big place I seem to remember and the food is typical but nice.
NeilA - 24 Jun 2005 19:54
This place is rocking, they have just hired a new Dj who plays the best house music I have every heard, he went through the ages as well from old skool classics to upfront fresh sounding house I was well impressed most Dj,s in leicester square and stuck on this r,n,b thing but this guy is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
we were just going to grab a pint before we hit the clubs for my birth day and bang mr Dj hands me a bottle of bubbley how nice was that.
FANTASIC FOR MUSIC AND PRE CLUB FUN.
badgertier - 4 Apr 2005 11:58
Not bad for a Hogshead, always a bit too loud though and full of thieves looking for bags to nick - I wouldn't spend an evening here, but as a meeting point or a quick pint it is OK.
TheGP - 29 Mar 2005 14:47
Pleasantly surprised - quite civilised for a Leicester Sq pub on a W/E, with plenty of room for a fairly relaxed drink upstairs.
tonytroy - 13 Feb 2005 18:42
In agreement with most of the other comments, this place is probably the best place in the west end to watch the football, although sometimes you have to ask the barstaff to put the sound on. A good pub to warm up in before you hit the clubs.
lennie384 - 7 Jan 2005 20:11
Nice pub, same as most Hogs around. Gets you away from the crowds.
anonymous - 29 Dec 2004 13:17
Good for watching football, althought get there early to get a seat. Prices OK but it's a hogshead and so not exactly charming.

If anyone knows a better place to watch football in W1/WC2 then let me know!

Mark - 14 Sep 2004 16:54
Not a bad place, has two bars.Serves heineken on tap which always goes down well. Its essentially a sporting pub with live football shown, beware it can get very loud and busy at times.
Nick Hamer - 19 Jun 2004 18:31
Fantastic pub, excellent atmosphere and more important excellent service from staff! Watched arsenal v man u there and had a ball! Nice barman too Hi Mike x
anonymous - 13 Apr 2004 10:30
Very average really, in keeping with the general Hogshead theme.
Good for: No surprises
thenationofjames - 27 Jan 2004 10:13
It was at this pub that an ex-girlfriend of mine yelled at me after she discovered that I'd cheated on her with her best mate.

I think they sell beer here too.
Ruby - 15 Jul 2003 17:29
It sells beer, including real beer and it's easily located. It is usually packed though, so don't go there please.
Ian Harvey - 11 Jul 2003 11:44
Not a bad pub, usually packed, especially at the weekend. Last time I went there we all got searched for weapons by the doormen. Kinda puts you at ease in a drinking establishment...
