user reviews of the Constant Service, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place has a single, small bar. It stocks ales from Harvey's. On our visit, they had Sussex Best Bitter, Sussex Old Ale & Wild Hop Blonde. There was also a real cider - Weston's Family Reserve. The vinyl record player and numerous LPs are a nice touch. I'd read that this wasn't supposed to open until 4pm on a Saturday. But we were there before and it was already busy.

Just moved to Hanover and the pies in this place excellent. Good beer as well plus vinyl always played.

As central Brighton becomes increasingly sanitised it's heartening that the town has areas like Hanover with good pubs such as The Constant Service. The pub is frequented by a fair few Brighton eccentrics which adds to its charm. A good selection of Harveys Ales which is always a delight for an out of towner. A few tequilas thrown in for good measure meant we left this pub a bit worse for wear at closing time. The only downside was the overpowering smell of food when we arrived, the food maybe good but we were here to socialise and drink so I might be nit picking.

Lovely quirky pub with excellent Harvey's beers. A great place to come.

Now this is a quality place. Being a Harvey's House, the beer on offer is, of course, excellent. Bit of a Brighton vibe going on here. The landlady was very friendly, and efficient, though despite her best efforts, I remained on the Best rather than trying the others. Garden outside, and a nice touch is the record player, with the cover of the LP being played on display. Thoroughly recommended - so much better than the city centre dross. I'll be back.

Lovely pub.

Choice is a little limited, perhaps - only Harveys beers were on when we visited - but the place has a nice feel to it and it seemed to be a bit of a community hub.

It was a bit dark, though - perhaps more of a winter than a summer pub?

Really enjoyed 3 trips to this lovely little pub now - local ales on tap and a good atmosphere inside and in the garden. Staff are friendly and I like the original vinyl playing in the background. Would like to try their homemade pies they sound good!

After an unspeakably long - and entirely unintended - hiatus of 7 years, I finally got back to this pub. I blame the Evening Star and Lord Nelson for the missing years, as so often they are too good and effectively prevent visits to Brighton pubs further afield that are just as deserving of attention. Here one can find a range of up to 4 Harvey's ales, all well-kept (the South Down was splendid last weekend), jolly service, and a typically Brightonian, relaxed vibe created by a canny mix of traditional and contemporary decor (note the multi-coloured representation of Southover Street above the bar), and an eclectic selection of albums on CD and vinyl (the latter has a special stand on the right for the current LP cover to be displayed - nice touch).
The pub is dog-friendly but not so much so that it interferes with those wanting a simple pleasant quaff at the bar or one of the tables.
The Service is indeed Constant, and all the better for it - well worth seeking out especially on a crawl which could take in any number of the many and varied hostelries in this part of town.

VERY FRIENDLY, LOVELY GARDEN, INTERESTING MENU FOR EVERY BUDGET. GOOD PINT, GREAT PUB.

By far the friendliest pub in town that really knows how to treat its punters. I moved out of brighton years ago and have since whiled away many hours on my visits back getting lost in decades of vinyl and slurping excellent g&t lovingly served by the staff (who aren't bad looking either). A great place to enjoy with friends and dogs- a real diamond.

well the name says it all the Constant Service...what a little gem, the staff are soo friendly and are always serving their station!!, shots a plenty, music a go go and roasts to die for, you could not meet a more frienly crowd in here, ladies, gentlemen, dogs, grannies and trannies all welcome, i could not recommend it more, the jewel in muesli mountain!! oh come on it just a fun loving great pub xx

the beer is excellent, as would be expected from a Harveys tied house, I've always found the service to be excellent, and staff to be genuinely friendly, and the eclectic vinyl selection is a great addition to this Hanover pub. The beer garden is great, especially on summer afternoons.

However some nights at the constant service are more enjoyable than others, there can be loud crowds (probably regulars) so not the pub of choice for a quiet drink.

Friendly backstreet local. Harveys beers but, unfortunately, only the rather plain Olympia on when we visited. Very welcoming barmaid.

This is a good pub. Good beer, friendly enough locals. The only bad thing is the service. Its awful.
I was last in a few weeks ago. It was at the time of a change of shift. The guy coming into to relieve the current staff rolled in so drunk he went upstairs and passed out, nice, especially when you are with your family as I was. The other poor thing was that the other guy that was working kept disappearing when there were 2 or 3 people waiting for a drink which proved very frustrating. When he did eventually return to his station he insisted on putting a record on before he would serve anyone. Seemed like a strange policy for a pub to have, his incessant whistling along to the aforementioned record got rather annoying too.
All in all a good boozer, they just need to invest some time on staff training and disciplinaries.

Hello, my name is Tom, I have worked in this pub for a number of years now. Under 4 different managers.
I would hope the staff are always found in a friendly manner, we strive to ensure we keep as happy as possible at all times.
Keep an eye out for some more improvements too. Scaffolding is up for a nice repaint, the garden will be being sorted out over the next few weeks.
Beer is still passionately kept and nurtured, cocktails served on Friday evenings, still great music lots of vinyl. we will be having ska B Que starting soon with great al fresco food and music for whiling away a sunny Saturday afternoon on the hill.
As for locals drinking Carling, we do not sell it or Fosters or Stella for that matter. Must have been an off day as the regulars are mainly well behaved (mainly).
We are a welcoming and friendly pub aiming to please with a great family atmosphere on a Sunday with Roast Dinners and soulful music, we cater for the football fans with 2 screens for the games when on, also games of scrabble chess backgammon and cards a regular feature.
Come on in have a drink a chat and see what you think! Say hello to Lise (the boss!) Jo Danny or myself!

my local. an excellent pub with an friendly (in a certain way) set of bar staff. the landlords passion for harveys results in some of the best kept ale in brighton along with the best seasonal ales the lewes brewer offers. when tom paine is on in here i can't stay away. music selection is also wonderful where theres bound to be some classic rock, soul, americana playing from the relatively extensive vinyl collection.

only downside can be when its full of a group of noisy, irritating regulars drinking their pints of carling.
bathysphere - 18 Mar 2009 16:51
Hanoverian must've gone on an off day, whenever I've been there the staff have been lovely and I enjoyed the classic rock n roll on vinyl. The quality of the Harveys here is always excellent.

Used to be a good pub. Completely gone to pot now and not worth visiting. Music choice is terrible and far too loud. Staff are unfriendly. Atmosphere is flat and souless and the food is barely edible. Do yourself a favour and visit one of the many other fantastic pubs in the Hanover area.

Friendly local pub, Great beer. Friendly staff. Excellent new menu. Saw a band there "the brown stripes" that was a great evening. The roasts are out of this world and the menu in the week is perfect to save on cooking time and have a quiet beer with some good music. I recommend this pub great outside area covered and heated.

Good, friendly local in a great area for pubs.

Good pub, not as good as some others in this wonderfully pub infested part of town but OK. Would stand out as excelent in another area.
forresearchpurposesonly - 18 Aug 2006 22:24
worth the walk up the hill, especially for the generous roasts. friendly pub in a quiet area.
brighton_bystander - 28 May 2006 16:58
I took 'em at their word & turned up at 3 in the morning.. there wasn't even a light on, so much for constant service.
TuftUno - 6 Jul 2005 13:50
Friendly place, but well past its prime Harveys Knots of May.
thequaffer - 26 Jan 2005 17:19
the best beer garden in Brighton (none of the usual picnic benches). the food's definately worth a try, and great selection of Harveys ales, shame about the uphill walk to get there,
