The Liverpool Echo reports that the thatched roof of this pub was destroyed by fire a couple of nights ago. Consequently the pub is closed until further notice.

The Scotch Piper is one of those pubs on Merseyside that I've always looked forward to visiting. It's tucked a bit out of the way, not making it too accessible. But this place is a real gem that was my favourite pub of the day. I just wished I'd have had longer here. But with my bus arriving late and more pubs to visit in the area, it was a swift visit. The pub is an ancient thatched building with character aplenty. The gents toilets are outside. 2 handpulls were clipped - Marstons Pedigree New World & Moorhouses White Witch. I opted for the latter, only to be told after that the third handpull also had the Piper 1320 Ale, also brewed by Marstons. But the clip had fallen off. The landlord was very friendly and interested in hearing about the pubs I'd been to on the Isle of Man the previous day, as he was a fan of the TT racing. A classic car rally was to be held there later in the day and his car was already taking pride of place on the car park. A roaring log fire was burning in the bar area and the place was begging me to stay longer. But time waits for no man and I made the decision to leave to get my next bus. I hope to be back though, as this is one of those special pubs that is not to be missed. I read in the local MerseyAle that the brewer wants to introduce food. I hope enough people protest. Leave this place alone to do what it does best.

Used to be a decent pub and well worth a visit, but called in for a mid-week pint for the first time in about four years and was disappointed.
You get the impression of being an outsider when entering, the beer wasnt up to scratch and most of all the smell..... Yes we know its one of the oldest inn's in the country, but the stench in there was a mixture of wet dog, straw and your grandads socks!!!

I love this place after a great day of walking in the area, in the winter they have the fire lit. Great place.

One of the oldest pubs in the UK dating from 1320 it is difficult to miss if you're driving on the main Liverpool-Southport road through Lydiate. A whitewashed, barn like building with a thatched roof it has always been a popular watering hole (well being 700 years old it must be doing something right!). You almost feel like you are entering someones house as you go through the tiny wooden door & into a small room with church like seats against the walls. Incidentally the bar is hidden on the left, although it is more of a serving hatch. 2 real ales, Black Sheep & guest (one from Hydes Brewery on my visit). If you are claustrophobic or like to be guaranteed a seat, then this is not the place for you. A small passageway to the right of the entrance will lead you to some more alcove rooms. Decor is rustic, whitewashed with low ceiling & black beams. There can't be many pubs like this so definitely worth a visit.

Slightly disappointed after visiting here - the interior is nicely olde worlde but the beer isn't really up to it. Only one available when I was there.

Wonderful journey back to gentler and more civilised times. Had Banks Bitter and presumably a guest, Everards Blonde which was very nice. Splendid interior listed in CAMRA National Inventory; the buildings and garden at the back need attention however. I went to Maghull station on Merseyrail and was guided by the friendly locals on the bus to this mecca, though the Liverpool to Southport bus 300 passes the door. Sadly I think the service finishes about 2000 so check when planning a trip.

The oldest pub in Lancashire (The real Lancashire that is, not the council area that masquerades under the same name and covers approximately half the area), this place is unmissable. The thatched roof, heavy oak door and tiny windows give you an idea of what is inside. To the left is the tiny bar counter, more like a hatch, with usually 2-3 real ales. Brains was in good form on my visit. The floor here is flagged and a real fire burns in the corner in winter. To your right is a corridor leading to two more heavily beamed rooms, the far one also with a real fire, and furnished very tastefully in mid-20th century style. All of this helps give the pub its deserved place in CAMRA's National Inventory of pub interiors. The atmosphere here is always tremendous, and it gets quite busy later on at weekends. It really is worth going out of your way for. About 10 miles north of Liverpool just off the A59, and accessible by bus. Go!

I wanted to love this place and I have to say that the building itself is great. However; the garden is overgrown and the beer was decidedly dodgy, I tried both. We had to wait to get served while the girl finished her fag out the front.
I imagine it could be a cracker, hopefully we just hit it on an off day.

Atmospheric, basic, thatched pub with concrete floor, open fire, corner bar under the staircase and timbers of the original cruck building in evidence, all in one small room (2 other rooms, 1 with dart board and picnic tables outside). Once walked in to find five or six of the regulars eating cheese and biscuits and pickles round the table watching the football on a tiny screen above the alcove next to the fire. I thought we'd walked into a farm kitchen. Changing guest real ale. A one off.

Splendidly traditional thatched roof pub on the main road from Liverpool to Southport. Take bus number 300 from Liverpool Queen Square - takes approx 40 mins. Stops virtually outside the pub. Yes, this pub does claim to be the oldest in Lancashire - dates back to the 16th Century, I believe. It's on the CAMRA National Inventory of Unspoilt Pub Interiors. Ales are now dispensed by handpump - not gravity, I had a very acceptable pint of Banks. Sheps was also on. Pubs like this have a certain timelessness - let's hope they're around for future generations to enjoy.

It's been a few years but it was a big "thumbs up" when I drank in here. One of the oldest pubs in Britain I believe. AND all of the ales were gravity delivered!

Thatched pub on the outskirts of Lydiate. Wednesday night Bikers night, a sight to see. Real ale. Friendly staff and customers. No dress code, it doesn't matter if you are in a suit or boiler suit. Excellant pub.
