user reviews of the Thames Court, Shepperton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Friendly service and lovely location BUT sticky bar counter and very dirty glass-topped tables outside. Will not be returning.

The Thames Court pub - where do I start...!
A fantastic location, on the river, right near Shepperton Lock. Lovely on sunny days! Wonderful oldey-worldy building, with dark oak beams inside (watch your head!)
A good long bar, enough for 20 people to stand side by side, but for some reason the managers don't want that! You have to queue up, in single file at the first till (for some unknown reason) like in the dinner queue at school...!! Sometimes this queue, for drinks or food, is out the main door....putting people off coming in! Where is the sense in this...??!! Please explain management! It doesn't make any sense. If you only want a pint, you have to queue 20 mins with all the folk queueing for meals. I'm sorry....but that's just daft...!!!
Last year I waited 40 mins for a sandwich here! It kinda puts you off coming back. And I never get even a smile from the manageress or bar staff....there's something very wrong there.
(I will have to reduce my rating from 8/10 to 6/10, and that's purely because of the fantastic location)! Get my drift...! :o(

Out of the 3 pubs in this part of Shepperton this is the one creaming the business. It wins I guess because of its location right by the Thames and seemingly has a reputation for food although not my choice. It's a big hit with families. The beer situation was as dire as the the two in Church Square, London Pride and global warming contributer Doomed Beer. This place though has niched itself as a foodie family place with which the other two can't compete which is why they should be selling an adventurous range of ales not virtually the same as this place. The Thames Court don't have to worry, they're busy with customers. Now there must be somebody round here selling a decent drop of ale......( see Barley Mow)

MMM microwaved food. Nice location and cheap though
beersos - 12 Jan 2012 15:31
Sunny afternoon - 100 or so people drinking in the garden - 2 people serving and they were miserable - not great.
Mothroy - 12 Jun 2011 19:09
Excellent location on the river near Shepperton Lock. Always a couple of real ales on which included Everards Sunchaser and Harveistoun Schehallion on most recent visit. Looks like great selection of food though not tried recently. Well worth a visit.

Visited this pub last night and it was absolutely heaving due to the good weather , although we had a little wait for our food the service ,beer and food were all excelent as always.

yet another plug for the spring grove morris men. Turn the record over uncreative old boy
bongobilly - 15 Jun 2010 14:41
Polite and friendly staff made us most welcome. It was a wet and quiet evening, but warm and cosy inside. Prices for beer is some of the most reasonable around here, The Rev James was in good form, but the Doom Bar was lifeless and tased as though it had been around too long.

Watched Thames Valley and Spring Grove Morris Men dance under the umbrellas to an audience of smokers, everyone else was hiding inside away from the damp. Good fun.
CreativeSpirit - 15 Jun 2010 14:25
In all honesty, I am a fan of this place... Although, I do think it is a little over-rated. In the summer-time, of course it's by the Thames and is a lovely location. The food is standard in my personal opinion. Overall, I have had many good times here and would reccomend it to anyone wanting a pub in a lovely-location.
nightsmoker - 19 Oct 2009 00:35
In here last night for a meal . Beers were Pride, Youngs Special and Doom Bar which was ok and a reasonable 2.90. The trouble with this sort of place is that you don't know if it's a pub or restaurant or what. Rather than people going to the bar normally some sort of unofficial single queue has started up, mostly for food I think buy it's a pain if you just want a drink. Meals were as to be expected, puddings were nice. Far from the worst pub/restaurant. Service admittedly was slow and the cute waitress actually refused a tip because of it. Would go back but Sunday evening maybe not the best time.
GuideDogSaint - 7 Sep 2009 18:07
Nice pub for a drink after a walk or bike ride by the river. Bar service can be frustratingly slow.
Have eaten here a few times but never my first choice for a meal as food is pretty boring and basic microwave pub grub dressed up as restaurant food.
Did notice they now have a kids menu but main menu still had same lack of choices and only 1 vegetarian option...lasagna..
sarahfc - 9 Aug 2009 23:07
Not a bad pub at all in my experience - more inspiring menu than expected and very - surprisingly - good value drinks for the location. Nice atmosphere and location too.
anngriffx - 8 Jul 2009 21:23
just watch out one of the barman tryed to short change me on two occations!!!
garyglitterlikesyou - 5 Jun 2009 13:52
Only two ales on this evening, the Timothy Taylor's Landlord was excellent and indeed served at a perfect temerature, but we all agreed the Wells Bombardier fell below spec. Food review next time :)

The staff were friendly and helpful and setting is a wonderfully relaxing spot for a pint, like a village green and there was even some Morris dancing from Spring Grove Morris Men - how wonderfully English.
CreativeSpirit - 2 Jun 2009 14:16
The beer was nice, the service was polite, the vegetarian option was disgusting although the meat dishes were ok, if rather harvester-like.

I like food with my beer and will continue to comment on it!! Helps me choose where to go to eat and drink if I can see other's comments :-)
slugbreff - 7 May 2009 15:48
I love the Doom Bar that they serve here now ...
Ch71s - 19 Apr 2009 10:44
Think the owner of this website should re-name it FITE - Food In The Evening! Only a couple of the 35 "reviewers" actually mention the type or quality of the beer on offer, which I believe is actually the purpose of the website. Rant over!!
fellwalker - 16 Oct 2008 11:04
Was not expecting anything much, beer-wise, from this rambling, riverside "tourist" pub, but I was very pleasantly surprised! The Timothy Taylor Landlord and Fuller's London Pride were in excellent shape, beautifully kept and served at just the right temperature for bitter. As the barman commented, "We're a real pub, sir; we know our beers!" I visited on a Thursday evening and it was easy to find a table, but I do know it gets very bust at the weekends. Added bonus: the food was very good, too. Again, real pub food!
fellwalker - 16 Oct 2008 10:53
Can highly recommend this pub good food though service can be a little slow, but it is in such a nice setting just sit back relax and enjoy the views.
eltel - 14 Sep 2008 08:00
What a fantastic, quintessentially English, riverside pub in a delighful surrounding. We had a meal for seven, sitting outside on the benches over looking the river. The service was superb and the food was served amazingly quickly.
Can highly recommend the Beef & Guinness Pie, the Scampi & Chips but best of all was the homemade Fish Cakes - plump & very tasty.

We did not suffer the over crowding (probably as a result of the inclement weather!) but the bar man did say, that on busy days, customers queue out of the door even when there is a 90 minute cooking time.
mpw246pl - 17 Aug 2008 14:32
Save this one for off peak. Great location on the river but it gets very, very busy and there's almost a long wait for food as the kitchens can't cope with the numbers. When it gets so busy, there's often nowhere to sit outside. Very much a chain pub but lovely on a quiet winter night.
2walkers - 19 Jul 2008 17:54
we really like it here but its popularity is its downfall as its way too busy in the summer.
food is excellent and we havent had a bad meal there.
One point i really cant understand is why people queue to get to the bar! any decent bar person knows how to work a bar and serve in the correct so Isee nopoint in queueing out through the door to get served..anyone else notice this?
lovely during the summer when it is less popular
edwardrr - 17 Jul 2008 13:22
Never used to like it in here, but after having Children, all of a sudden I see the appeal.. A decent pub for a meal for sure.
TheGP - 26 May 2008 20:28
Just been to this pub for the first and last time for a meal. The food was good, but after waiting for TWO HOURS and having complained after an hour and a half....The service is beyond a joke and totally unacceptable. The staff were rushed off their feet, they need to employ more....Who runs the place, Scrooge?
razor - 10 May 2008 23:44
This pub used to have a lot more character, but was always badly managed. Although it has lost some of its character, it is now professionally managed, and a pleasant place to eat and drink.
madforrealbeer - 3 May 2008 23:12
This used to be a cracking pub. Then, like so many, there was a totally needless re-fit which destroyed the place. Now just another restaurant the serves beer.
FreakyDancer - 8 Apr 2008 16:58
Beautiful location by the river watching ducks, boats and the world go by!

Well mannered, well spoken and helpful staff.

Good food (not one complaint!) and in generous portions with good prices.

Great varied wine list, with taste!

Yet most of all it has kept it's charm as a traditional upper class casual pub/resturant where you can take family of all ages, friends, business clients to, even that special person you just met...

Perfect!
christieelle - 23 Mar 2008 12:05
It is situated in a lovely area-espcially lovely when it is sunny!
The food and the selection are good.
A nice seating area outside, not far from the river.
firecracker980 - 18 Mar 2008 23:05
What a shame the interior of this pub was ruined a few years ago. Great location, poor food, poor service, very over priced beer.
Matt_Helm - 31 Jan 2008 16:55
Nice place, Food good and Staff very helpfull. Great in the summer and winter.
anonymous - 22 Jun 2007 11:37
Sailor ahoy; watching me, watching you, watching me. The place to stop off and watch the world go by.

Handy watering hole for mariners waiting for passage through the lock.

Chief selling points are the large outside areas; bench tables to the front for food, and seats to the side for catching the sun.

The interior was an amalgam of country pub and San Francisco coffee shop.

The food and drink are also-rans.

Magellan - 17 Apr 2007 13:24
It's been completely non-smoking since July 2006!!
sarah101 - 10 Apr 2007 19:11
The 'Thames Court' pub is now ALL no-smoking! Like its 'sister' pub the Kingfisher, by Chertsey Bridge (Pre-empting the nationwide ban which commences in July'07). TJ
TeeJay - 20 Mar 2007 15:40
Went for a late lunch over the Christmas school holidays and was really impressed! Everyone in our group enjoyed the food, the burger I ordered was the best I've had for a long while. A good selection of beers and wines. The staff were very helpful and attentive, as even though there was no childrens menu, they were very willing to make up a small portion at a reduced rate. Will be going again soon.
mistral1969 - 4 Jan 2007 14:07
If you live within a parakeet's flight of the 'Thames Court' (locals will know what i mean..) and have not been here before, you are missing out on a vital part of the meaning of life..!! Get along straight away now..!!
The Sunday lunches are renowned far & wide, but get there before 1.00pm, or you may have to wait 45mins for a table! Mind your head on the low beams if you're above average height! Even in winter its worth having a brisk walk along by the nearby Shepperton Lock, and then you've earned a hearty meal, some mulled wine, or a good hot toddy in the bar, and be warmed by a real log fire. (Even the wife likes it here.. bloody well done there Thames Court..!!) I would not be surprised if you bumped into someone you knew, an old friend, or someone you hadn't seen for a long time. I usually do! TJ
TeeJay - 19 Dec 2006 00:49
This is probably my favourite pub in Shepperton, still being quite young (only 20) I sometimes feel me and my friends are unwelcome in some of our local pubs, as we are probably perceived as being louts, which I suppose is fair enough judging by the behaviour of most young people these days ;)

However, it is quite the opposite at Thames Court, where we can often be found enjoying a pint or 2 outside under the umbrellas, which I suppose could do with a clean, most of the girls don't enjoy looking up to see 18 spiders looking down on them, but I think it adds character.

Wonderful service, fantastic bar staff, always friendly and are always kind and polite when asking for I.D.

Great Pub! Lovely location, right on the river at Shepperton Lock. Fantastic on a sunny day, watching the boating activity, or just walking along the tow path. A lovely old Inn, with old wooden beams, and low ceilings & nooks & crannies, ideal for Sunday lunches and mid-week meanders along by the river!
I love the Thames Court, on a summer afternoon it feels like you're on holiday! In winter you can be sure of a bracing walk in the fresh cold river air! Then a welcome drink in the safe sure surrounds of a pub thats been there for hundreds of years or more!

One of the oak trees outside this fine establishment, that had branches propped up by stays for hundreds of years was cut down last year, due to lightening or blight or something. Such a shame, that tree was part of the character of the Thames Court for hundreds of years! Still, its made room for more seats/tables in the front garden now, so more people can enjoy a meal & drink at this inspiring venue. Come by boat or by car or by foot, either way you'll have a warm welcome at this well established tavern by the water. We luvit! TJ
TeeJay - 25 Jul 2006 01:47
I used to go to this pub 20 or so years ago when it still retained the style of an old house and was really quite charming (and fairly quiet in the winter).

Having visited again recently, what a change. It has lost its charm and is now basically a busy bar and restaurant catering for masses of people most of whom are camped outside at the front when the sun is shining. Inside, most of the old pub has been gutted to cope with the crowd.

The location alongside the river is still very good but don't go here expecting a quiet, relaxing pint by the river because the summer crowds will ensure you don't get it!

gearbox - 27 Jun 2006 12:47
Great location! Reasonable food (not bad, not brilliant). Popular with families (so why not get the other highchair fixed, instead of making parents timeshare a single highchair?).Only downside is that this pub is an absolute magnet for savage Chavs.

Why is it all the nice pubs are over-run by, either, Chavs or Nathan Barleys or braying suited knobbers? Sometimes a combination of all 3!
Drof - 2 Jun 2006 09:09
We often visit Thames Court and find it a very enjoyable experience, in particular a summer's afternoon or evening sitting outside under the canopies (you can't beat sitting near the river on a nice summer's day imo)! The food is of a good standard as is the service and children are also warmly welcomed.

We recently visited for Mother's Day. The food was very good and waiting time was only a little longer than usual, not too bad for what is generally a busy day. We also ate there on Good Friday evening and although a rather long queue to order and told there was a 30-45 minute wait for food, we actually waited less than this. Seeing as it was packed inside and out and only a few tables available, that seemed reasonable to us!

We have never had a bad experience whilst visiting, the meals have always been enjoyable and are reasonably priced in our opinion. A nice place for a family get together, with friends or just a quiet meal!

I have rated this an 8 for what it is like at lunch-times. In the evenings especially in the summer it gets rather overcrowded. However to have their wonderful fish and chips at lunchtime whilst looking out over the river is a delight. It's setting by a very attractive part of the Thames is second to none.
haroldovich - 11 Dec 2005 08:32
Was a great Friday/Saturday night location in years gone by. Unfortunately has fallen victim to the trend of turning good pubs into quasi-restaurants.

Food was good, and nothing wrong with the service. But I yearn for the days of sitting out by the river on a warm summers night with 100 or so others, getting slowly but surely ratted before staggering home down a dark road where I was sure to put my foot in either a lump of something or the world's deepest puddle.

Ah.... the good old days.

I came to thames court for a meal with some relatives. All the staff were lovely and the pub was very clean. Their was one barman his name was Michael and he went out of his way too make sure i we had a nice visit and i have decided too go their more often,

Right on the river Thames. Lovely setting with nice food

What a lovely location, the perfect day with good food and drink.

Is this pub haunted?! If so does anyone have any information about it?!

Thanks.
Guest - 24 Oct 2004 21:51
We recently moved to Shepperton and, have used this fairly local pub / restaurant a few times now. Food is very good and plentiful with sensible prices provided you don't mind the wait and self-service ordering system which can be frustratingly slow on Sundays!

Guinness quality is pot luck, depending on how much of it they have dispensed, not forgetting cleanliness of pipes -etc.

Overall this is a good place to go and chill out in. Church Sq pubs in my opinion are over rated and, expensive with Guinnness around 3.00 per pint (Sept 04) and questionable impersonal service from barmaids. The Hotel in Church Sq (sorry, can't recall name) is hopeless when it comes to speed of service and I had to wait ages (20 minutes!) on two previous visits for my Guinness. Will not return due to this. Pub opposite quicker but brash service, so The Thames Court is a good alternative and has much better views too! Enjoy!
Ray - 30 Sep 2004 13:38
Fabulous location to walk off a good meal in this fine pub. The big red brick house opposite over the River recently featured in an advert for something to do with pro footballers.

Good place to watch boats go by. Shame punters are not allowed to sit on the grass bank anymore.

Pop around the corner to Shepperton Square for dinner or another tipple, when you are done here.

One of the greatest summer treats! Good food, friendly staff, oodles of fun watching river life.

An overpriced pub, with no real atmosphere. Like going for a drink in a beefeater.
TheGP - 10 Aug 2004 15:24
Went there Friday lunch time is in a wonderful location on the Wey navigation. Good food although it was very busy. Two ales on London Pride and IPA

Very nice pub, perfect location on the river towpath at Shepperton. Please add to your directory listings!
