please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I couldn't find the pub pictured (actually on St. Jude's Street) so am plonking this review here. Excellent establishment a few hundred metres away from Dalston Junction that’s serves a great many real ales, the bulk of which hail from the Redemption Brewery. Of course there is a hipster element but this is offset by a local feel. The people next to us displayed a nice sense of irony when deciding whether to move on for ‘street food’ – the Thai victuals served in house looked less ersatz.

Tried to visit Tuesday 2nd at 17:00 and it was closed. Don't know if that is permanently or temporarily.

I see a nice pub, and I want to paint it black...
Black as night, black as coal

Hmm, hmm, hmm

It's not easy drinking up, when your whole world is black

Read some negative things about this place but on my two visits it's been really nice. Empty, yes, but the friendly barman really helps. Comfy chairs too. Whilst not one of the best pubs in Hackney, it would be a shame to lose this place.

It has been improved and the drug dealing is less ostentatious and barstaff now clueless rather than unpleasant, but beer still disappointing and overpriced.

Only been in once before the refurb and once since. The black paint is nice and pretty I suppose. The tables are the same I think and don't fit with the new look. The chalk board advertising 'beers from around the world', whilst not lying, leads one to think of more exotic brews than Corona, Becks and Budweiser...

Needs a bit more time methinks, could be alright. Oh, needs handpumps. Mm-hmm.

Recent new ownership and refurb when I walked past...
Windows you can see through,
candles on the tables,
yuppies at the tables,
chalk board advertising bottles beers from around the world.

Gone up market, but didn't see any handpumps and still has the same bar equipment for Carling et al.
Rating changed to unrated. Someone check it out.

Comic irish pub. We wandered in after visiting the Pembury Tavern up the road. Old fella behind the the bar had a voice that suggested that in less than 18 months he'll be chaining ciggies through a hole in his throat. After serving us a pint he got stuck into the quizzer.

Music was Irish rebel songs, blasted out to a miserable selection of regulars sitting at the bar not speaking to one another but none the less maintaining rounds.

In the space of 30 mins three different chinese guys came in selling pirate DVDs.

Not somewhere I'd advise you to go.

Conveniently located pub opposite Hackney Central station. Not much to look at but is friendly, affordable and does a half decent pint.
