The Claret Wine Bar had a better ale selection than the Prince of Wales, just up the road. But there was still nothing exciting - Shepherd Neame Bishop's Finger & Master Brew, Palmers Copper Ale & Sharps Doom Bar. A singer was on in the corner next to a staircase that presumably led to more seating on an upper level. Not bad. But for some reason I was expecting better.

Good to see this place improving steadily for sometime now, actually back on my list of places to go! Getting better beer to the customer :) Keep it going and I'll be in there all the time.

Cheers

A small wine bar close to the centre of Cheam. It is quite narrow with the bar on the left hand side. The bar had 5 hand pumps selling almost exclusively Cornish beer. There is hard wooden seating along the side of the bar. There is a raised are at the back with a small alcove and 3 tables and chairs. There is a glass roof above. There is a lot of wood but I suspect most of it is fake.

Well done the Claret. Lovely stuff every time.

What is it about Cheam? I mean this in the nicest sense as it has 3 cracking good pubs within half a mile of each other and this is one of those. 4 beers usually on pump, from the like of local brewers such as W.King and Surrey Hills and quite often one from Palmers of Deepest Dorset which finds favour with me. And the Sheps Master Brew regular is more than decent too.

Good atmosphere, despite being tiny, 2 TVs with a different sport on each of them and slap bang in the middle of the village, near to the bus stop.

Can anything be done to cheer Morticia up? "smiles are rareruined beautycontemptuouseven in disposition, muted, sometimes deadly" (Charles Addams) Unless of course Angelica Huston has gone undercover in Cheam. "Huston's portrayal of Morticia was always illuminated by a ghostly glow around the eyes, which became most noticeable when she was standing or lying in dim light."

Curry Night in a pub is normally a boil in a bag meal, but not here the young chef makes a fresh curry that rivals that of the villages curry houses. Was made welcome as soon as I arrives and overall my whole experience was a joy. Will definatley be back to try some more of their food and real ales!!

Bland, bland, bland - if you had to think of a colour to describe this place it would be beige. A completely unmemorable place - shame as it used to be always packed and atmospheric. It's been 'modernised' and now loooks like any bar anywhere - consequently it was virtually empty when visited, just a few old lags watching golf on the TV!

Something has gone radically wrong with this once great little boozer.Eat there recently and more like a greasy spoon.Glasses were filthy and attitude of elderly greyhaired barman was terrible. He kept trying to eavesdrop our conversation. The wine "selection" was just that, red or white.Needs a shakeup badly.Has the feel of somewhere thats up for sale or about to close its doors.Pity.Cheam deserves a proper local with proper staff.

Of all the places to go in Cheam, I have always found this bar relaxing and accomodating. The manager, Biffy is by far the nicest northerner I have ever met. His choice in football team is excellent! Its also a great Eater pub! The house special, Biffy Bacon Sarnies are the best!

Good staff, good beer, great food. A severe lack of seating doesn't help though, and the layout of the place can be a pain in the arse when trying to carry beers from the bar to the tables.

Don't be put off by the 'wine bar' tag, this is by far the best pub in Cheam. Good ambience, friendly (& beer-friendly) guv'nor, three good beers on tap - Masterbrew & Hepworth Iron Horse (4.8% strong pale ale) were in excellent form on Saturday. Sport TV not intrusive with low/no volume.

Welcoming, both staff and clients. Didn't notice the price, assume they must be average. At least a couple of bitters, seem to be good.

Still the best place in Cheam - I have visited for over 20 years when (occassionally) in the area.
Main part of the bar fairly busy and often sport on the TVs but also has quieter few tables at the back for a more sociable chat with mates. Excellent beers usually includes Master Brew which is always enjoyable.
