user reviews of the Wheatsheaf, Swindon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Wheatsheaf is a cosy Wadworth's pub in Swindon's Old Town. It features a number of old wooden casks behind the bar. But, they do not hold any beer. The normal range of Wadworth ales was on - 6X, IPA, Horizon & Swordfish. They also had Severn Brewing Golden IPA as a guest and 3 real ciders from Weston's - Old Rosie, Rosie's Pig & Rosie's Pig Rhubarb. With no music, conversation was the only noise. But, with only a handful of customers, that did make it a little quiet. I quite liked it though.

Lovely old fashioned pub. Great ales from the wooden casks..As for previous comments they clearly have not been back for some time. My wife loves this place great atmosphere.no "plastic fantastics" to be found in here!!

This has now been refurbished and reopened. Still not sure what the opening hours are, but managed to get in there on a Friday evening.

Refurb looked plasticky, but seen an awful lot worse, and it's fundamentally the same (unfortunately this includes the loos). After a while, we'll probably think this is what it looked like all along,

Guest and 6X were pretty decent, but it's a cider disaster: nothing reasonable, even on bottle, and how do you manage to ruin Stowford? (my guess is to freeze it, put it back to the proper temperature, and then hope people won't notice).

I'll visit again, but it'll take a lot to get the Chairlady of the Board there.

A disgrace to the Wadworth name, now open only from 1800 Tuesday - Sunday, doesnt open Mondays at all, this used to be THE place to drink in old Town, what on earth has gone wrong? Can see it closing for good soon...

I'd love to give a report on this pub but it didn't open until 5pm so I missed it from my lunchtime crawl! The board outside said "5 cask ales today" - great if you're open not great if you are shut! Strange timing as all the other pubs were open (Saturday)

I've been going to this pub for well over 20 years, has a smaller front bar and a large back bar, I remember it being it being sympathically refurbished and enlarged around 1991. A Wadworth's pub with a good range of their real ales and a guest, I found the beer quality to be pretty good when I went, hasn't changed much over the years which is no bad thing.

Well how times change, popped up to Old Town today to have a pint of 6X in the Wheatsheaf only to find it closed. In fact it looks like Waddies have virtually given up on this place, it doesn't open at lunchtime at all (except Sundays) and appears only to open at 1600hrs. What a disgrace, its their only outlet in the town too.

Large Wadworth house in the Old Town - has a bit of a 'circuit' feel to it though it does have a traditional look iwth front bar and rear area. Avoided the Wadworth offerings and tried the Ramsbury Gold which was a nice enough pint. Would revisit if in the vicinity.

I would recommend that if you're heading to old town for a night out - stay away from the wheatsheaf: bad beer, bad service. Until now, this has have been my fave pub in Swindon, but all of a sudden the pipes were very chemically and they had a very bad attitude if you questioned them over it. Unimpressed, and a real shame. Best alternative - The Steam Railway

Well, after flirting with food and a couple of other diversions, they seem to have settled on doing what The Wheatsheaf has usually done well, being an excellent beer pub, and they are making a decent fist of it, with "ancients" like me in the quieter front bar, and Da Yoof at the back.

Good range of bottled ciders and perrys alongside the Wadsworth + guests (though where did the Green Goblin go?).

Always seems busy when we go in. Ale drinkers in the front bar tell me that the ale is good. Guest beers and ciders changed regularly.
Good atmosphere and the current crop of staff don't neglect the front bar as has happened in the past.
Good drinking experience.

Good beer, and a big plus is that it does bottles of Weston Organic Vintage cider (not as good as the draught, but better than the other bottles).

One of the better pubs in Swindon. We've been coming to this pub for about 30 years, and never had a bad pint of 6X. The pub has has changed a lot in that time. It is a bit quiet early evening but busier later. I like JCB and the other beers they have, a good selection there. It is rather smokey so will be interesting tosee what it's like when the ban comes in.

New bosses just moved in, haven't seen much change yet so I'll reserve judgement for now.

The beer's good, but someone needs to look to the ambience. Not the place to start a night, you need to bring your own atmosphere with you.

Many years ago this used to be the only pub in Old Town where you could get a pint of Wadworth, how times change. Still a Wadworth pub with a friendly atmosphere and good beer. But the front bar needs decorating & tidying up, the back bar is okay, big screen SKY, jukebox, pool table, quiz machines, etc. I would suggest that it suffers from accountants running breweries.

Needs attention and a bit of investment. Still friendly though.

Good ale, good atmosphere - always a good night!
