please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Blue Scrumpy.. perhaps not as busy on Dec 29th 2019, but the landlady let us take normal glasses outside. Inside very busy though... slightly 'train spotting' crowd (and I'm not talking Irvine Welsh), but quirky, and a second to none beer choice. I really can't remember them all... I certainly had a Bewdley Station porter..

The Railwayman's Arms is a lovely little station bar entered off the platform at the Severn Valley Railway station. It was packed on our early Sunday evening visit. Although, a train had just arrived and emptied out. There were also quite a few who had clearly missed a few trains, or arrived on the first of the day and were still there. This was easily the busiest pub we had been to during the day and we had to sit outside with our plastic glasses (-1 for that). Ales were Hobson's Best, Champion Mild & Town Crier, Batham's Best Bitter, Bewdley Worcestershire Way, Worcestershire Sway & Station Porter, Exmoor Gold & St Austell Trelawney. The real cider was Woodhall's Whubarb, a new one for me. A 7/10 from me, only spoiled by the plastic glasses and drunken crowds.

Brilliant as ever and a delightful place to sit on the bench on the platform in the early evening watching the locos going on shed. Superb quality beers.

Have cottage in Bridgnorth now and have been to this pub several times. Fast becoming my favourite as the atmosphere is good, the service efficient and friendly, the beer top-notch and some good ciders too. The railway memorabilia and general decor make it a special place. In terms of choice, there are several (8 or 9) very well-kept ales and a few fizzy and still ciders. Try the 'bostin' pork scratchings too.

Still the same (except the price has gone up a bit) as alexw two years ago and still on this occasion a lot better than the one on Kiddy station. Wonderful place

A great pub, surely the gem of the SVR! About 8 cask ales available, prompt and friendly service and a decent traditional atmosphere. The ale I tried was excellent value for money too at £2.25 - this pub is far nicer and cheaper than the pub on Kidderminster SVR station!

What a lovely place this is. Eight handpulls, and Batham's seemed the furthest travelled. I tried Bewdley Worcestershire Way, well-kept and very tasty. The barman was friendly enough, the whole place was worth missing a train for or becoming your local if you were lucky enough to live nearby.. Even my pub-averse wife said how "cosy" it was. Much, much better than its counterpart at Kidderminster.

Had a quick half of superb Pardoe's Entire before getting on the Severn Valley Railway. Also available were Pardoe's Bumblehole, Batham's Best, a Hobson's, 2 Thatcher's ciders and a Sheppy's cider, a mild, a perry and probably some other ales I missed. The range is certainly much better at this end of the Severn Valley railway than at Kidderminster station's King and Castle. Two halves came to 2.71 so good value too. I thought it was great, pity I had to get on the train!

Very busy during steam gala. If you stay there long enough you will meet every railway enthusiast in the Country. Excellent beer and railway pictures on wall. Customers told to wait in a line and staff served them quickly. Perhaps one day people will put 3 in a slot machine and take away a pint of beer in busy pubs.

After our walk around the old castle ruins and other sites in the town we headed off to the Railwaymans for some well-earned beer. The whole of the town had just had a complete power failure so there were no lights anywhere and even the cliff railway and traffic lights had stopped working. However, having handpulls for the beer meant that I would be OK! However just as we got to the station some power returned and the bar had light and the coffee machine was working again. Hoorah for modern technology!! One loco in steam but going nowhere so a quick couple of photos and back to the excellent Bathams Bitter (followed by Goffs Tournament and Hobsons beers). Then all of a sudden we were invaded by a wedding party!! The bride and groom having their pictures taken on the patform - they must have been fozen solid as it was a chilly day and the bridesmaid's dresses were not exactly winter modes!!! It turned out that the wedding party had chartered a train for the day.
However it made for an entertaining hour or so while we enjoyed our beers and our superb pork pies. There were a few other customers in the bar and we were actually surprised to find it open when the railway was shut for the winter. The young lady behind the bar was very friendly and we didn't see any "Basil Fawlty" type gentlemen!! The real fire was blazing away and it was a very pleasant visit until we had to head back into the cold outdoors. This a very good pub and of course when the steam trains are running you can combine a visit here with one at The King and Queen at the other end of the line in Kidderminster.

A pub that sells plenty of real ale on a platform of a brilliant heritage railway must be good! And it is, however, as has been noted in previous reviews, the staff are so disinterested it has become amusing.
If you dont like dealing with the public then dont run a pub. If you dont like it when it gets busy then dont run a pub. The old bloke who runs the place really is the Basil Fawlty of the pub world.
But dont let that put you off. The beer is good, and so are the trains!

JonnyConsumer - 14 Oct 2011 16:18
Bumped into Poirot on the platform once, getting off a steam train. Well OK it was someone dressed as Poirot, apparently the Severn Valley Railway had put on a murder mystery trip.

For me this is the best pub in Bridgnorth. Great selection of ales, all well kept, and a great atmosphere and setting. Tried the Shires Brewery OBJ (O be Joyful), Irwell Works Brewery (Bury) Copper Plate Bitter, Hobsons Bitter and Town Crier last Saturday, all were great.

Yes, as mentioned below, do make sure you replenish your drinks and stake your claim to your seat when you see a train arriving.
Wirral_RealAlians - 13 Aug 2011 13:51
If there's one thing that spoils this pub (and it's hardly the landlord's fault) it is the clique of steam railway bores who frequent the seats by the bar and who always talk a few octaves louder than everyone else. You are better off sitting further away to avoid the contunuous drone.
Mark_J - 21 Mar 2011 18:56
local ales a-plenty in this pub which forms part of platform one at Bridgnorth, the northern terminus of the Severn Valley Railway.

Limited seating inside but benches on the platform & in front of the pub, also an awning to the side with plastic tables & chairs.

If you hear a train pulling in get up the bar sharpish, it gets very popular, they allow plastic glasses on the trains so ask if your train is due.

Currently celebrating their 40th anniversary, they have a 5% porter commemorating same 2.60/pt very moreish.

I can't leave this review without mentioning that they sell Reg Mays pork pies, if you've had one you know what I mean, if you haven't, then you're in for a treat!

Very busy - am not sure if the volunteer element of the Severn Valley Railway extends to the staff behind this bar but it sure is an amateur affair. Good bar staff serve people in order. That isn't just to be fair to people, it also prevents frustration and potential aggrevation. I found I was not alone in being overlooked by the staff who seemed to favour those with big hair dos or cashmere sweaters..... actually am not sure what it was they looked for but I didn't seem to fit the bill. If the place didn't serve Bathams I'd give it a zero. Get your act together.... if you either ignore or don't notice people at your bar then you shouldn't be doing the job. Good beer is NOT enough... Good service is also a prerequisite of a good pub.

Lovely pub & a lovely pint. there are plenty to choose from. The only down side and it is a big downer is the lack of seating and the arrangement of the tables. If you have a couple of pints here, don't visit the loo until you have finished, or else your seat will be taken before you move from the table and you won't get it offered back.

Delightful watering hole forming part of the station buildings at Bridgnorth Railway Station at the end of the Severn Valley Railway ( which starts at Kidderminster ). The pub is actually owned by the SVR Railway Company.

Inside is decorated with the inevitable railway memorabilia - photos, pictures and old station signs , eg - Troon, Ilfracombe - stations that were, at a guess, axed by the infamous Mr Beeching in the 1960's. Note also the splendid fireplace with a large Cheshire Ales and Stout, Smethwick brewery mirror.

The pub serves a good selection of real ales from local micros - on my recent lunchtime visit these were Pardoe's Bumblehole, Worfield Shropshire Pride, Warwickshire Shakespeare County, All Nations Coalport Dodger Mild, Titanic Stout, Hobsons Best and Bathams Best. Both the Shropshire Pride and Hobsons Best - at 2.30p and 1.90p respectively were on good form. The pub is a GBG regular.

Tasty locally produced pork pies are also offered, but these had run out on the day of my lunchtime visit.

There's outside seating on the platform where you can watch the steam trains come and go and wallow in the nostalgia.

I really enjoyed the visit. This place is well worth seeking out, irrespective of whether you're here for the train journey.

Great place to while away the time between trains. A fantastic selection of beer, all well served, and the staff were very efficient and helpful. Just one slight moan, the 'regulars' did not seem to like you if you sat in the wrong place, and would rather invade your space (Especially if you went to the toilet, or to look at an engine) than sit at the next table. Or maybe we were just unlucky! Great to see real perry as well, and called perry, not pear cider. Marketing guys note - Cider is made with apples, perry with pears!
Dylanwing - 20 Jul 2009 14:48
I have never had a bad pint here, and I must have drunk hundreds of them over the years! A classic boozer!
julestrainspotter - 17 Jul 2009 11:59
A pub in a converted part of the station. Inside has two rooms, though in effect it is one large room. Painted in GWR green it seems, the place is covered with railway memorabilia (big shock there then) and World War II replica posters. Service was really good.

Beerwise; Burton Bridge Stairway to heaven; Hobsons Town Crier; Sixbells Big Nevs, Slaters Owzat, 3 Tuns Stout, Bathams best. The stout was fine, the Bathams fantastic. The Hobsons MILD sadly went as we arrived, but we found this replaced by Tring's Mansion MILD - also quality

This place wasnt heaven's waiting room, it was heaven, as far as pubs go for someone like me. We just finished our beers in time to get out before a GWR Pannier Tank pulled in with the next train and they all alighted to pop in the pub.

I must stress this pub hit all the notes for me at that visit so i will score it extremely well

What can on add?Just a great place.
The mild was from an obscure micro so I preferred not to take a chance. So I went for Batham's bitter. Is this really a bitter or a light mild?A superb drink, just the thing on a very wet Saturday morning.

Pleased to see 2 Three Tuns beers were on.Bishop's Castle is not the easiest place to get to,so it is nice to see their beers available in other parts of Shropshire.

Can't add much to the previous 09/late 08 comments. Must go back as was the last call on our crawl before the coach departed. fantastic place. A gleamimg Duke of Gloucester was on duty in the station (for oggwyn!!)

A great pub, with great beers and in a great location. Love the clock that runs anti-clockwise above the bar.

Hobsons and other local ales.

Wonderful well run pub on the platform of Bridgnorth station on the Severn Valley Railway. On my visit there were 2 real ciders from Thatchers and 6 real ales on pump and a wonderfully eclectic choice but had to go for the Bathams Best after hearing so much about it. More of a golden ale when compared to what one usually expects a Best bitter to be and all the better for being an original, sublime stuff in tip top condition and went down a treat!

The landlord & staff were very attentive and welcoming and the interior being railway themed (of course!) took you back many years and in my opinion all the better for it. Food consists of pork pie or pork pie with Stilton, proper pub grub at last instead of pretentiousness of fine dining! The pork & Stilton pie was sublime and at 1.30 the pub food bargain one would dream of, yes they *really* are that good. Pubs like this will always thrive because they do not pretend they are something they're not, they keep to basic common sense principles of excellent product in excellent condition and welcome their public one and all to the show. You would be a fool to miss this pub if in the area. Top marks!

Well worth a visit , great beer and atmosphere , anoraks , notebooks and nasally whine not compulsory , are'nt trainspotters weird ?

Super super super place, Hard to imagine what we would of lost if they had not opened the severn valley railway. Top display of railway artifacts. Brill beers selection; Derventio 'Venus', York 'Decade', Titanic 'Mild', Hobsons 'Town Crier', Stonehenge 'K.P.A. and Batham's. Great to be able to get a plastic glass to take away on the train.
trains2064 - 5 Aug 2008 09:27
It seems that nearly everyone getting off the Severn Valley Railway trains heads straight for this pub, and with good reason. Excellent selection of quality beers, just get in quick before the crowds.

If you see someone say that someone is safe. Which is as much as we can hope for when the wolves are running.
mattyboy - 30 Jun 2008 11:45
One of the sad things about the Bridgnorth Folk Festival relocating to Shrewsbury is not being able to call in here. This place has a really special feel to it and that is further complimented by the excellent range of beers they sell.
LickeyEndBooze - 30 Jun 2008 08:25
Great beer, Great pub, If you visit the valley this is a must. The Bathams was to die for. Ummmmmmm
HintonManor - 27 Jun 2008 23:28
This is a great pub on a great railway. Although as a volunteer there I am biased. an_ecunemical_matter probably was served by Elaine, who is a charming young lady and very efficient in running the bar.
julestrainspotter - 25 Jun 2008 13:55
Batham's beautiful. I also had a beer from the bridgnorth brewery which was also 1st class.
DotGoodbody - 24 Jun 2008 08:56
Quite a busy pub on the Severn Valley Railway with a good range of ever changing beers. The quality of the ales was very good.

The Batham's on here yesterday was delicious, and was served by a delicious barwoman although my entourage were describing her as "BR 29973"! Don't understand it meself. There was Black Sheep Rigwelter on for my beer monster mate. Top pub.

Glad the Valley is running again as I have missed this place. I trip on the train and a couple of pints, I am always spoilt for choice here. Bathams on this trip. Beer of quality.

A real top banana of a pub. Bridgnorth Brewery is highly recommended.
mm1963 - 14 Jun 2008 10:11
good pub & decent ales

This is an excellent pub, serving reasonably priced beer, in very good condition, and a great atmosphere.
julestrainspotter - 19 Sep 2007 15:06
Called in while attending this years beer festival held at the station and enjoyed the beer from the new Bridgnorth Brewery. There is a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. A good mix of clientele.
gillhalfpint - 16 Sep 2007 12:27
This struck me as a decent pub, and I had an enjoyable pint of ale without, mercifully, falling prey to the jackboots of the Mild militia.
joegreen - 3 Oct 2006 14:01
This is an excellent pub that always has a MILD. On Saturday it was Sadlers MILD, on previous occassions I've had Bathams, Hobsons and various other MILDS. This is a much better pub than the watering hole at the other end of the line at Kidderminster station where they very rarely have a MILD on.
Stus.search.4.mild - 12 Sep 2006 00:03
A bit basic and full of train spotters. But a nice pint and really cheap.
anotherpintplease - 24 Feb 2006 12:42
Although part of Severn Valley Railway Station, this is more than a museum ,it is a live pub, with quality beer and regular beer festivals. There is no charge, although if there was a small one, it would be worth it for the excellent pint of Batham's I had.
