Has had a major-ish refit recently which makes it look more light and airy> Service is ok. Beer is circa 3 a pint. It is more concentrated on being a restaurant than a pub, with the occasional live band on.

I loved this pub! Food was great the fish platter was delicious, beer was lovely with a great range! Staff were welcoming and very efficient and the garden is gorgeous. Definately give this one a go!

Dining orientated main bar which relegates drinkers to a 'stooled' area in front of a section of the bar. I wouldn't say it was gloomy as opposed to tired and lacklustre. It's main focus is on dinng but on entering the last thing you'd envisage is eating in the place. As for the ale - four beers on and the only 'out of the ordinary' brew was Waggle Dance - which I tried and wish I hadn't. A riposte to the garden area saw me sharing my smoking zone with a chav family who's brats were booting a ball around in the hope of knocking someone's pint over - much to the delight of the neandertahl who spawned them. Not my cup of Bovril but you make up your own minds.

Food orientated pub that relegates drinkers to stools by the bar. Four mundane ales on of which I went for the Waggle Dance which was insipid and uninspring. The garden area seems pleasant but was populated by a chav family whose brats seemed intent on booting a ball over the tables with the intent of knocking someone's pint over to start a brawl with their knobhead of a father. Gloomy?..no, I could live with that - decrepit and tired are more apt.

Has had bit of a refurbishment. Decent range of which was around 2.90 to 3 mark which was of reasonable quality and service was ok but could be a bit faster. Went there on a Saturday night and they had a band on but it there were a few very drunk people in there, I know that's what pubs are for but one was dancing around and fell backwards towards the band.

Completely different, if it ever was gloomy, it definitely isn't now. The current owner/landlord and have made a lot of effort on the decor and the range of beer has improved.

Haven't been to The Old Cock Inn in ages, what a pleasent surprise!! My family and I had a fantastic Sunday Roast with all the trimmings and my dad sampled the mixed grill, although the portion was so large he couldn't quite finish it. It was a lovely atmosphere with 3 log fires blazing, creating a very warming atmosphere. The staff were extremely friendly and polite throughout, would recommend to anyone, though it was quite busy so might be best to book. I can definately recommend the Creme Brulee dessert and my dad was throughly impressed with the ale range.

Four handpumps which on my visit included Brain's Top Notch,Bateman's Rosey Nosey and York Brewery Yorkshire Terrier. However the ales were not well kept and the pub interior lacks character.

Very much a food orientated pub with every table laid out with place settings, even the tables outside had tablecloths or placemats. The outside area is effectively the car park but there are a few covered gazebos with comfortable seating that would make for good al fresco eating. The pub has an attractive well-kept interior with nice furnishings. Four ales available, possibly three regulars and a guest. Quiz Tuesday nights.

Great place with a variety of Music , food and drinks. The staff are really helpful and Live music nights are brilliant and have seen many great acts. Good food and the seafood is a specialty. Well worth a visit. Quiz on Tuesday just started

I went in for lunch recently, and it was very poor and overpriced for what it was. Service wasn't great either. I haven't been there on a weekend night, so I can't comment on that.

Havent been into the Old Cock Inn for many a year and went in last week what a fantastic little pub this has turned out to be!! The pub has excellent food, great menu offers and well worth a visit.. The beer garden was excellent my freind and i spent a lovely afternoon in the beer garden with a wonderfull jug of ice cold pimms, soaking up the sun, we shared a great fresh seafood platter that was bouhjt in fresh that day we couldnt have asked for better, we were served by an excellent blonde lady called Sue who gave us wonderfull fantastic service and we would definatley reccomend this to all our freinds, well done the Old Cock Inn.

I've been using this place occasionally recently, mostly early evenings. Definitely had a recent refurb, friendly staff and OK Stella.

Popped in here by chance on a Thursday evening when the M25 and M1 were behaving themselves (dont say that too often) and I found myself with tons of time before meeting No 1 Son from his train at Luton. So in search of beer and food diverted to Harpenden as I remember it having several pubs the last time I came through (when the M1 was blocked) and tried here as it looked quite inviting from the outside.
Nice open pub which you enter from either end. The main bar area is laid out more like a restaurant section with candlelit tables. Then off to the side is a couple of more relaxed seating sections with lounge type furniture. Decent food menu with good selection of snacks, starters and mains. The mains are around 8.00 and the one I had was value for this. Three real ales last night, Black Sheep Best, Deuchars IPA and St Austells Tribute. Only tried the Tribute as I was in the wheels and it was excellent. And the lady behind the bar (who I presume was the Landlady) could not have been more helpful. So if you are after decent beer and decent bar food then I cant fault this pub
My only problem was sitting on my own at a table for two with a tall candle burning away, I must have looked like NobbyNoMates whose date had stood him up

sorry i compeletly disagree with people saying the old cock inn is gloomy, if you go in there on a friday and saturday night then you will take that statement back i believe the old cock inn to be one of the best pubs in harpenden. i think it's spacious great attmosphere. the staff are welcoming and have great disco's and live music. The food is great they do everything from a snack to a 3 course meal and it is reasonably priced. I love going in there and will continue to.

Quite a good selection of ales, and reasonably kept. Plus there's always room to get a seat!

Staff are friendly, drinks average prices, could do with a refit. Good place to start off in but maybe not the whole night though. Agree with previous comment aboout in being a bit gloomy.

Bit gloomy but service is reasonable. It shows the signs of having management who at least try, unlike the appalling Cross Keys.

this pub would seem to have a lot going for it, sunday afternoon jazz sounds great, its spacious and quiet, but on my visit i was let down by mediocre real ales and to be honest food that was palatable but not really value for money.

Can't match the Cross Keys for character but the staff are always friendly, it's easy to get served and there's a load more seats. Always 2 or 3 decent beers available. Good venue for a pre-dinner drink as it never seems over-busy early evening.

What happened to live football on a Sunday? It used to be quite pleasant. Live jazz in the courtyard in the summer was pretty cool too. Not so much going for it on a average Saturday night, and its a little bit far from the station...
tpk1 - 22 Oct 2004 16:25
It is wicked! And has very fit barmen!
Kat - 27 Sep 2004 09:51
With a comparitively large area outside used for seating in the summer, this place is good when the weathers nice and you want to sit outside in the evening supping a cold pint. Despite a refurbishment afew years ago it is still alittle gloomy inside but the service is generally good and the prices competitive for Harpenden. Live music and other entertainment during the week.
