user reviews of Mackenzies Cafe Bar, West Malling

Sadly waited almost an hour for food that had not been ordered by the waitress, this could have been forgiven but for the fact that there were only two other tables that was sited in the entire downstairs part of the restaurant. This was also annoying for the fact she was too busy talking to other staff - and for the fact that when asked why the food was taking so long she seemed not too bothered about an apology but seemed quite happy to give a sarcastic " have a nice day " apon us leaving hungery and irritated. Am going to speak to the owners in the morning. Will post there comment.

There are so many good Italian style eateries elsewhere that it's difficult not to compare. West Malling is sadly lacking when it comes to Italian food. The place only survives because it doesn't have competition for Pizza or Italian grub. Interior was tired and although not dirty it was `unloved`. Underwhelmed. Certainly shouldn't be considered as somewhere to buy beer.

The food here is revolting, unless you really really like cheese.

It astounds me how any restaurant can serve up bad Italian food, especially a restaurant that has been around for so many years. Italian food is a simple pleasure and I'm amazed how bad it was at this establishment.

I have been here twice in the last couple of months (I didn't want to go back the 2nd time but it was a friend's bday and she had booked to go here). Both times my food was drowned in so much cheese I thought I was going to have a cardiac arrest imminently.

1st time I had a lasagne - much cheese, minimal meat.

2nd time I had a pizza - the menu said the topping would be spicy beef, onions and mushrooms. As it turned out it was so swamped in cheese I couldn't tell if any of the other elements of the pizza were there or whether I'd just been conned.

And to add insult to injury, it's quite expensive for an Italian.

Avoid the food!

It's not bad for a few drinks upstairs though.

It's a cafe/bar, not a pub. It has a cool, informal pizza/pasta restaurant downstairs and a bar upstairs, where you can also eat. Upstairs bar gets hot and sweaty after 9pm at weekends, but good atmosphere, tho.
Good choice of beers and wines. Restaurant is very child-friendly pre-7pm. You can't book a table for less than 6 people, so get there early on the weekends. When it's hot, restaurant doors open onto High Street, so has continental feel to it.
NB: Mackenzies restaurant at Liberty Square, Kings Hill, closed about a year ago, and has been replaced by The Hurricane (not as good).

OK but at weekends the upstairs turns into a sweat box full of tragic divorcees. Not a bad thing just don't go there with your partner! Always clean though and service is excellent.

A pizza and pasta restaurant downstairs, and an excellent bar upstairs. Great food, plus you can eat upstairs. Relaxing in the week and jumping at the weekend.
