Been here numerous times in the past because of excellent food and service, didnt know it was under new ownership till we arrived. The food has gone downhill badly ,my choice was not available(no reason given) and fish pie was suggested by the charming waitress @12.95. It turned out to be like a tin of tuna with a strange sauce topped with a loose fitting piece of dry filopastry, served up with slightly overdone chips and a spoonful of frozen(i guess) peas. The menu stated "cod, daddock and prawns , of which there was non of. My wifes "steakpie" was served up the same,ie chips and peas. My chosen sweet, sticky toffe pud, had been microwaved to oblivion !! We will not be going there again and really sad as we used to go 50 miles round trip for the previous owners superb homemade food and hospitality. Overall tasteless and overpriced food but, charming waitress

A very pretty pub, defines the word 'quaint'. In absolute terms to fault it is petty as service was OK (the woman who I presume to be the head waitress was a bit overly characterful though - I'm used to being treated like royalty when I go out - she expected us to treat HER like royalty!), beer alright if slightly too cold and the food was nice though undersized. If the prices were in line with other places in the area I would have rated it higher, maybe a 7. However, the pricing seems to have been determined on the 'what should we charge, then times it by 3' principle. Has apparently been voted pub of the year?

From the outside this is THE idyllic English country pub in a superb location. Sad to say though that we just didn't enjoy the place at all. Food over-priced, beer OKish (good wine list though) and rude landlord and staff. Must try harder if they want people to visit again, which I will do when I've heard that they've left. (Visited Jun '08, but just discovered this website, so sorry if there are new people in charge there since).

Amazing pub just outside Ross-on-Wye - the setting is beautiful, the food amazing, great wine list and the staff are so friendly. Old wooden tables, candles and roaring fire make it a real bolt hole in the winter months and the outside setting in the beer garden is stunning. Highly recommended.

The pub itself is lovely - very cosy and atmospheric. We popped in for a pint on a quiet lunchtime and found the staff very friendly. However we did find that although the beer was well-kept, the main emphasis of the pub is food. We went away feeling that just having a drink without a meal wasn't quite the "done thing".

A really cosy place with fantastic food and very friendly landlords... we'll be visiting again soon!

Have been once only, although the food is of a good standard, the service was poor and the portions miniscule. The staff seemed to be more interested in chatting to the 'locals' than attending to their job. Made London Nouvelle Cuisine look like huge portions. Prices are certainly higher than say the Conran prices in London and wholly unjustified. I'm happy with astronomical food prices if the style, quality and service justify it. Pity really as the architecture of the pub pub and it's location are fantastic. Would not go back again.

Absolutely blown away! We'd been meaning to try it out for ages so the hubby & I walked the 6.5km country walk from Ross-on-Wye for an evening meal in the pub (you can book in the restaurant but we prefer more relaxed surroundings.. and we weren't disappointed). The all wood interior was really cosy, with pillar candles on tables and fairy lights around the fireplaces. Food was unbelievably good - I had the monkfish wrapped in parma ham in a light curry sauce and the hubby had lamb cutlets cooked to perfection. Wine list was excellent - managed to get through two delicious bottles of Rioja.. meaning we were more inclined to get a taxi back but it was worth it!

Excellent food, lovely atmosphere, fantastic people...can you ask for more?!

Will definitely come back whenever I am in the area!

VERY up market clientelle, but landlord friendly enough. Food very pricey, but looked excellent, and varied. Will go back for a meal. Imaginative guest beer, Breconshire.
