An oddly conflicted place, on the one hand trying to be a slick gastro pub while also attempting a more jaded, Shoreditch chic.

Bad stuff:
- Hand pull frequently runs out reducing the options to lager or lager.
- It's not cheap, food & drink is standard price for "nice" pubs in the area.
- Can be very busy on Sunday mornings & weekend evenings
- Staff are a bit hit & miss; the mainly female bar staff can be familiar & efficient one day and "difficult" the next.

Good stuff:
- The beer is good if you can get it, though the pumps don't vary what's on offer very often.
- The food is good, the menu changes month to month & the variety of charcuterie & novelty bar snacks (giant scotch eggs etc) is a nice touch
- It's a really nice pub i.e. an attractive well laid out bar, small, leafy back yard, clean, has decent furniture, panelled walls etc...
- Selection of wines & spirits is up to the pub's gastro aspirations.
- Good atmosphere. Weeknights are busy enough for atmosphere but eating in the bar is still comfortable & most seats will be full by 10pm. Weekend evenings can be hectic, but the atmosphere is still first rate; this place attracts a mixed group, but is far enough from central Shoreditch to avoid the "up to town" crowd.

Trying to place itself in the "gastro" pub category judging by the chalked menus, actually very chilled and friendly but..... lets itself down big time with a thoroughly mediocre and uninspiring selection of beers and ciders. A couple of well kept real ales (the landlord was crap on this visit) a proper imported lager/wheat beer ? Real Cider rather global pith like magners... Plenty of similar pubs in london get it right, shame this one doesnt.

Quite busy for a Tuesday night but over 7 for two pints and the worst stench of piss from the toilets I have ever had the misfortune to experience.

Visited this pub today and am having conflicting opinions on it. Firstly, food... excellent, but at 14.50 for a main meal bloody pricey. The beer seemed fine but at 3.50 also not exactly cheap and the pint glasses were no-where near filled up.

I was warned of the rude staff however I actually thought they were ok, albeit very hungover, but been there done that. Can't really knock 'em for it.

Would be a nice local boozer but probably won't be eating there again anytime soon!

Extremely fashionable by the look of it corner pub at the end of the small up-market area (surrounded by housing estates) with a lot of old Trumans panelling, but absolutely full of people on a Wednesday evening. TT Landlord and Meantime LPA, but not cheap. In fact rather expensive.

The staff are so unbelievably rude here that me and my friends thought we were being filmed for a new series of Game For A Laugh! I will not be giving them any of my hard earned money ever again.

Apparently Barbra Windsor's Grandfather used to drink in here!!

Single bar street corner pub convenient for the well known Columbia Market.

It's a former Trumans pub that many people will know for being the pub used in the TV comedy programme - "Goodnight Sweetheart" - a programme that I have to confess never really warming to, despite it featuring Dervla Kirwan, a smart looking woman who knocked around with Nicholas Lyndhurst ( of Only Fools and Horses fame ). Perhaps surprisingly, there's no pictures or photos in the pub to indicate this connection.

The pub retains a fine Trumans exterior and there is still much to admire internally, although it has clearly been knocked about quite a bit. There's some of the trademark Trumans wood pannelling at the back. The pub seems to have been opened out from its original layout and is now a single bar with a central bar servery. Most of the windows are clear glass, although an unused former "Jug and Bottle " entrance retains etched glass.

The pub is heavily food orientated and prices are sky high. On my recent Saturday afternoon visit, the pub was dominated by a mixture of tourists ( who had presumably been visiting the market ) having late lunches and people who appeared to be New Labour Wannabee types. There's no real pubby feel or atmosphere to the place, I'm afraid.

There's 2 handpumps - TT Landlord and Meantime LPA being the 2 beers on when I visited. The TT Landlord was 3.50p ( yes, really !).

Even disregarding the sky high prices, I'm not planning on returning

Dropped in early on a Fri lunchtime so no trouble getting served. Had Meantime IPA on tap - OK.

Staff are very slow to serve. I stood opposite 4 of them eating as I waited for a drink and then was treated poorly. They may be just short sighted? Some P45's need to be handed out. I won't recommend the pub.

Fantastic pub in terms of the building and a great interesting location. Just a shame that the staff are so unfriendly, rude, disinterested and treat the customer as an annoying inconvenience. 2 decent ales on tap, Adnams and Tim Taylor but they can't be bothered to keep them flowing so often have to resort to Guiness instead as a compromise. Also, check your bill as in addition to being pricey, the staff consistently seem to "accidentally" overcharge.
A pub hangs on the service of aside from one member of staff here they let this great pub down on this front, a shame...

agree that this place is a bit over priced ..however nice selection of beers ...food okay ..worth a visit if you are feeling flush. lots of arty types and people with kids in there on sundays.

Very over priced for both drink and food.

This is a lovely pub - especially since it's been done up and is in a great location right by the flower market. The food's a little on the expensive side, but worth it for the atmosphere.

Friendly character pub. Good wine selection and all the usual suspects in beer. Will be going back to try the food

The pub's recently been taken over and spruced up and is now doing very good food. No longer the mental Sunday morning mash-up of legend but now more chilled and welcoming local. Highly recommended.

Famous as the pub in BBC TV's "Goodnight Sweetheart"

this pub is open from 8am to 4pm on sundays only. the djs play lots of sexy tunes to people who've been up all night and really should know better.
claire - 8 Oct 2004 11:46
This looks kinda shut, but has a sign by the side door saying "Cafe Bar" so it might still partially be open
