Have to disagree with the last comment about the beers. I went in October, has it changed so much in a month? No mass-produced bland beers. Two changing real ales, from Redwillow and Windsor & Eton. Other draught lagers etc from Kernel, Maisels, Redwell, Schremser, Windsor & Eton again. Similar mix of London micros and continental names in the bottle cabinet, with Chimay, Five Points, Kwak and Shoreditch breweries represented.

Nice pub, nice staff. Minging beer selection. We gave up trying to find a lager or ale that wasn't vomit inducing and went to another pub instead. Would happily return, but only if the beer selection was changed.

Dear oh dear - only one hand pump on last night Greene KIng 'London Glory'. Not a good pint at all - dull as ditch water.

Now under new ownership.

Popped in last night & was impressed with the new paintwork & general feel of the place.

Feel encouraged to start using this pub again on a more regular basis.

Good luck to the new owners.

Dreadful place, full of drunks and quite unfriendly
keith253 - 9 Mar 2010 18:18
This place is ok for watching Sky Sports on the plasma screen or maybe for a couple on games of pool on one of the two tables upstairs, but I wouldnt go in here on my own again just to relax over a pint as I found it a little cliquey. Maybe it is just my aversion to pubs that have prints on the wall that are for sale.

I cant see myself returning.

my local!
the bar maids are quite slutty but friendly if your are not a poge 3 lookalike then they get petty and wont serve you.

Never drank the beer so cant comment although they have been known to put red wine in the fridge!!! =O

The good thing is the novelty of their eating pies because going by the contents it really could be sweeney todd in the kitchen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

still its my local so i can say all that =)

dreadful. dreadful, dreadful pub.
scruffy staff and landlord, flat beer and untidy place that clearly needs someone to come in and take some pride in their work again.
toilets were filthy and neither the hand dryer or the lighting in the cubicle worked and haven`t for some time, proudly on display there is a sign stating " play pool here "- what , in the toilets?
depite this i have for some time recommended it as somewhere to watch football on sky as so few pubs in the area have this facility, however after my own recent experience i certainly won`t be sending anyone their again , and will be going to the city pride in future myself.
this is due to the landlord deciding five minutes into the second half of the man.utd v. arsenal champions league match that some of his patrons were not drinking enough of his beer quickly enough ,and truning the match offuntil everyone bought more .
this not only annoyed the slower drinkers but everyone else as well , upsetting the entire clientele of the establishment in one fell swoop
i have not seen such an obnoxious attitude and total contempt for the customersince Gerald Ratner declared his own shops sold crap jewellery, this pub/landlord surely has no place in the modern world and cannot survive economic reality much longer.
only the presence of two pool tables and some drinkable lager justify the zero rating.

One of the better pubs in the area. Beer on good form served by friendly helpful staff. They do do food but its bar food and therefore won't stink the place out.
Open Saturday 12 till 6. Well worth a visit..
nickthefish - 10 Apr 2009 07:58
Nice, comfortable, unpretentious and good value pub, with pool tables and dart board, and reasonable prices. They don't do food.

The only drawback is that you need to tiptoe around the landlord, especially if him and his friends have had a few pints. Sadly, we no longer frequent this establishment because one of our number had "creative differences" with the landlord...

Great little pub, excellent pool table and the staff and owner are really friendly!

Pretty dissapointing pub. Only one if the aforementioned visually impressive ladies on show to boot. Still, she was certainly wise to the ways of good jugs....
CaptainJamesTPint - 17 Apr 2008 17:39
Play pool and darts here with London Saints. Normally only either GK IPA or Abbot, sometimes both if you are "lucky". Only real reason to visit is for the visually impressive barmaids.
GuideDogSaint - 7 Oct 2007 22:05
Classy-looking from the outside, not so classy on the inside, but still a respectable boozer. Unfortunately the only Ale on is Greed King IPA, but at least there are 2 nice pool tables and a dartboard. The one oustanding feature of the pub is the dumb waitor ('Magic beer chute') upstairs in the games room.

Fair do's John Bonser - I meant not a great *immediate* area for pubs, most of the pubs on Fleet Street being pretty average. Of course, there are plenty of great pubs within 10-15 minutes walk of here, but on Fleet Street itself I'd say only the Old Bell deserves particular praise. Recommendations warmly welcomed, though.
grecian - 19 Jan 2007 14:07
"not a great area for pubs" according to Mr Grecian. Hmmmmm.....? I reckon he needs to look a bit harder
JohnBonser - 19 Jan 2007 09:53
Below average. The barmaids are friendly, I agree, and the bar architecture is nice, or at least would be if not for the glass shelves. However, only one real ale on tap is poor, and I didn't feel it was well-served. Also, the layout of the pub is very boring. Not a great area for pubs, but even so there are better local pubs around.
grecian - 18 Jan 2007 11:56
Exclusively female barmaids, who are friendly.

The Australian barmaid (very good looking) gets larger by the day. She must enjoy the pub cuisine, a perk of the job!

Much much better than the dreadful Harrow pub further down the same lane.
anonymous - 3 May 2006 09:41
never been anywhere so filthy and if it comes to food i'd rather have a big mac meal in mc donalds.
staff might be friendly but don't think they can make up......
wish you good luck!
dolcegabana - 3 Nov 2005 14:20
Friendly and welcoming typical City pub, ( although I 'm sure how many other pubs have an upstairs pool room !). Nice ornate bar back. Well worth visiting if in the area and the more well known pubs ( e g Punch Tavern, Cheshire Cheese, Old Bell ) are too busy. Not too keen on the pub sign outside, is this only temporary and a more traditional permanent one on the way, I wonder ?. Definitely worth a second visit
JohnBonser - 10 Aug 2005 12:25
it isnt thankyou very much whoever posted that comment below. The food is good, makes you feel at home a mixture of people not far from blackfrairs station, cabs around everywhere and also surrounded by shops, the food is lovely and no one ever has had a complaint. so many different people. the reason why its 'full of post room staff from law firms' is because their offices are near and they clearly know a good pub when they see it. clearly this person doesnt have taste. see it for yourself before you judge it by peoples comments
sophiem - 8 Aug 2005 17:04
Full of post room staff from the law firms...
anonymous - 12 May 2005 23:55
its been painted on the outside and on the inside its looks great! the barmaids there are friendly. there is a room upstairs that has two pool tables in there and a tv. downstairs there is a plasma on the wall. the food served there is good. i heard that they do Pie and Mash which not many pubs do and its is open till late. i go there often it is easy to get to and you always feel welcomed.
