Having been a couple of times recently, more for convenience than choice, I cant see that the closure of this place will be a big loss to many people if the previous poster is correct. The only real plus points are that it is cheap and you can guaranteed a seat. It hardly has the most inviting exterior and once inside it does not take long to soak up the rather grim, plain and drab interior. The whole place looks like it is on its last legs with redundant beer pumps, unused food counter and a general atmosphere of depreciation. Where there was until recently a relatively comfy sofa lounge area, there is now a pool table (being used last night by the sort of person who should not have been served in the first place) and a pile of empty kegs. The furnishings are basic and the drink selection is at best poor. The music is a weird mix of anything from jazz to Genesis and there is an old upright piano in the corner although I really cant imagine there being many Knees Up Mother Brown sing songs on a Saturday night. The plasma screen was pointlessly on with the sound down and there are a few fruit machines etc but very little has been done to make the place attractive or inviting. I'm afraid that this place is as depressing a pub as I have been to in a long while.

Please ignore the review from 6 Feb...the fact that this reviewer is talking about 'working class' folk and 'inebriated patrons' shows you just what a cloistered life Stonch must have led. Inebriated patrons in a pub - heaven forbid!

The staff are subperb, the food is delicious, the patrons are the friendliest bunch you could hope to meet.

And the fact that its 'working class' can only be applauded in an area filled with moronic wannabes.

This is a true pub and quite frankly it's all the better off for not having class warriors such as Stonch as regulars...(good luck to the Tories in the local election Stonch!)

There is a fine selection of beers for all tastes and the wine list is surprisingly long and reasonable.

I would have rather not have felt the need to write this review since i like the fact the North One is generally quiet - it's one of my refuges - and in many ways i'd like to keep it quiet. Sadly i felt obliged to write this following Stonch's comments which are totally unfair.

Go and try the place out for yourself - and for those you not familiar with the 'working classes' - if nothing else it will be an education!

You really feel they are trying so hard to give a modern gastropubby feel to this place, sadly they fail. Not too bad but zero soul. A million standard procedure lagers on draught (they have everything of that type plus leffe) but no real ale (two handpumps without even pump clips attached hiding at the end of the bar).

Barmaid was quite friendly as were the inebriated patrons. Seems very working class which makes the attempt at a modern interior all the stranger.

Really cool place, country side style like decor, very coisy and friendly. My friends and I were shopping in Islington and were looking for a place to relax and have something to eat afterwards. What a surprised! Great food: real restaurant quallity but pub prices and served with smile and care. We are definately be back.A.

Wicked Pub! Friendly bar staff, with even friendlier regulars. Fashionably retro decor with comfy couches, (Watch out for the one by the Window, unless you are one of those special people who look their best with their knees around their ears!)

Only critisism: They dont take cards, sort this out and i can guarentee a good evening.

How come this pub is sometimes empty when the Angelic is heaving? Had a lovely night there last night, friendly staff, warm surroundings, comfy sofas. They even made me a hot toddy!

After a week this place is my new local :o)
I went to the Quiz Night and Speed Flat-Mate event last week, both was hoot.

A good selection of drinks and a nice chilled out atmosphere. This place (and the Chicken and Leek Pie) is a must.

10/10 for the North One, for not making a drama out of the crisis.

Was with a few friends at the nearby Angelic on Saturday when there was a powercut in the area. After being told by staff to leave, we walked up Tolpuddle street and came across the North One.

They too didn't have any power, but had candlelight on the tables and behind the bar. Someone was also playing the piano.

Brill.

Situated opposite Sainsbury car park. I and a couple of friends went to a quiz night on Wednesday. Staff was friendly, Quiz host was v.funny. Drink prices were reasonable. Downside = Lighting could be brighter
