White Hart, Headington

user reviews of the White Hart, Headington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The White Hart was my second Everard's pub of the weekend, following the excellent Crown Inn in Beeston (Notts). The White Hart doesn't quite live up to the Crown. But, it does have a nice village location opposite a church and both pubs had far more guest ales than Everard's ales. Tiger was the only brewery beer. Guests were White Horse Village Idiot, Brunswick Railway Porter, Shardlow Reverend Eaton's & Purity Ubu. Unlike the other pubs I tried in this area of Oxford, they also had a couple of real ciders - Weston's Rosie's Pig & Thatcher's Cheddar Valley. There is a small bar at the front and a larger room at the side. Nicely decorated.

An Everard's pub that's allowed guest ales,we arrived whilst a Beer Festival was on,the Festival required tokens and was easily the most expensive pub of the day.The beer selection was very good and the garden was very charming with a mini penny farthing and a newly planted flamingo tree.

I have visited many times but never reviewed it until now and it remains an important part of the local fabric due to its ales (Elgood's Warrior was on tap), food and community buzz - there was a great atmosphere on a Friday night. Only bum note is the amount of rugby memorabilia which is a little disrespectful when one considers how close it is to Oxford United's old Manor Ground - pictures of Maurice Evans, Jim Smith and Malcolm Shotton would be more appropriate than that yawn provoking image of Fran Cotton emerging from the mud.

Lovely historical pub in an idyllic setting. Seems to be owned by Everads of which there were 3 beers on as well as one by Holdens and one by Castle Rock. All that we had were in good condition and the food was excellent. Highly recommended. Bus 8 and 9 go from Oxford City centre and a 5 minute walk down High Street in Old Headington will bring you to the pub.

I cannot recommend this pub highly enough. The staff are all extremely friendly, the guest beers are well-chosen and well-kept. The garden is large, sheltered and is possibly the nicest pub garden in Oxford. The beer festival held each year in May is great. The large and loyal following of regulars are extremely friendly.

Along with the Masons, the White Hart makes up the two best pubs in Headington, by some considerable distance!

I feel that it would be remiss of me to not post in this section having read the previous comment. As a new resident of Old Headington I must say that it would be hard to discover an establishment that was more friendly to 'strangers' then the White Hart. As with all places, getting 'in' with locals takes a minute or two but it required nothing more then saying hello and a friendly chat. As for the beers, they are varied and well kept (being there during the beer festival doubtlessly helped) and with two guests as standard it doesn't look like it's going to be dull any time soon. It didn't take long for this place to feel like home and I can't recommend it enough!

As a resident of Headington I'd have to say this is the worst pub in Headington. It has a small crowd of regulars who are very aggressive to "strangers". There are several excellent pubs in Headington, namely the Mason's Arms, the Butcher's Arms and the Britannia (used to be dire, but has improved a great deal since the football moved away). My advice is to try one of these and give this place a miss.

Pleasant pub with a friendly welcome and good service. The ale drinkers among my group were generally happy with a range of Everards ales.

A hidden gem. Well kept beers and a lovely garden. Well worth a visit

What a fantastic pub, one of Oxford's hidden 'village' boozers, and only a stone's throw from the busy London Road. The south facing garden is a delight in sunny weather, the food is good and the beers are well kept. In a city crammed with pubs this is one of the best, worth a visit.

Cracking pub that is hidden away in the quaint outskirts of Headington. Went for a Sunday roast last week, which was the best I've ever had in a pub. A bit pricey at 8.95, but the beef was beautifully cooked and along with a few Tigers went down very nicely indeed.

The best pub in the area for beer and atmosphere. Avoid the London Road and come here.

Sorry mgt (previous reviewer) but I'm not a member of staff. I notice that Alfred Powder has reviewed a number of pubs as well so unlikely to be a staff member either. My review was based on a number of visits over a few months and not just the one visit which I suspect yours was. I've always found the quality and choice of ales (for the GK dominated area) to be very good. I stand by my view that this is one of the best pubs in Oxford. I've given no rating for this posting as it would be unfair so soon after my last post.

First 3 of these reviews (from June 2009 to Sept 2008) must have been written by the staff. Place is pleasant enough, but garden, though attractive, has concrete benches. Beer is at best average, and staff hurried and indifferent. An unremarkable place, the best thing was that it wasn't far away.

This is a superb pub in so many ways. Lovely old building in a quiet tucked away corner of Oxford. It feels like you're in a village pub. Excellent choice of ales from Everards with one or two guests usually available. The garden is magnificent. I was there recently for their beer festival which was well organised and very popular. The staff have always been friendly and welcoming whenever I have been there. This is most definitely one of the best pubs in Oxford.

Went there the other day with some friends and had a fantastic meal! The new menu is excellent and compliments a good range of guest ales. They have a beer festival coming up on the 16th and 17th of May. Over 20 ales...sounds good to me! BBQ throught out the day. Highly reccommended and will definatly be going to the beer festival.

Really nice pub. Excellent beer and friendly atmosphere.

both bar staff couldn't pour a pint of Guinness, one didnt know what was in a bloody mary and served me a frozen cheese sandwich, ug. went back 2 months later and still got an horrifically sloppy pint with the inside of the glass smeared with unrinsed detergent and other people's lip smudges on the rim. such a shame it would appear that the management do not see fit to train their staff properly because despite the poor service the setting, interior, clientele and beer garden are all above the standards to be found anywhere else in headington.

Despite having lived in Oxford for a number of years in the past, I was unaware both of this pub and of the lovely roads around it until a friend took me there at the weekend. Almost everything one would want in a pub really - lovely Cotswoldy exterior, cosy interior and fine Everards beer. The kind of pub that one imagines drives nearby house prices up.

Lovely local pub. Great beer garden for summer evenings and cosy inside in the winter too. Good selection of beers and wine.

We stopped going here for a while because of the unfriendly service and complete lack of atmosphere. However, better bar staff and good beer has returned it to its former status. Recommended

Not to be confused with the White Horse - this is easily the best pub in Headington and one of the best I have been to in Oxford. Excellent beers (Everards) and a fantasting walled beer garden out back which is good for whiling away a Sunday afternoon.

wonderful old man local meets guardian-reader atmosphere, excellent beers and good food, plus staff are enormously friendly. has a sleek, lazy pub cat. also a very nice beer garden. set in a lovely old-villagey backstreet of Headington (couldn't feel less like the rest of the area) and is the exact opposite in terms of clientele and atmosphere to the Black Boy round the corner, which is bloody scary and should be avoided.
