2 from Wyvale, Old bakery bitter and HPA along with Skinners Lushingtons and Byatt's American Brown Ale. As always, all in tip top condition. Monday night menu was goulash or quiche. No doubt that this pub is a pub as it should be, standing head and shoulders above anything else in the area.
TonyMitch - 13 Apr 2015 21:35
The bast pub in the town by a mile. Warm and friendly welcome, comfortable, home cooked food every Monday evening (tonight it was fish pie or goulash) made on the premises by the lovely Janet. 4 pumps with 2 from Wye Valley and the other 2 rotate. This week it was Hobsons Mild and Old Prickly. As ever all 4 were in tip top condition. A large range of whisky Wine and soft drinks to cater for all types. This is a pub as a pub should be.

A must visit to a kenilworth pub although the opening times need to be checked before you plan a visit the best pint of St Austell tribute ive ever had. Offers a good changing guest selection.

I'm beginning to like kenilworth for it's ale. Third pub and another good pint. Wye valley HPA. Also on wye valley bitter, st Austell trelawny and byatts urban red. Have to say though what is catching my eye is the 2 Irish single malt whiskeys on sale. I might be here a while. :-)
The_in4mer - 3 Feb 2012 17:09
The old bakery never changes. The best pub in kenilworth by a mile. Wye valley bitter, wye valley HPA, st austell tribute and jennings sneck lifter tonight. Place full at 17.30 with a mix of locals and good real ale fans. Well worth its 11 years in the GBG.

Another great evening in the old bakery. Drinking abbeydale moonshine which is going down very well. Also have wye valley bitter and hpa as well as st austell tribute. Just 20 minutes after opening the place is packed with the beer flowing very well. A pub worthy of my first review on my phone whilst sat in the very pub. As always recommended. Now in its tenth consecutive year in the good beer guide.

Just been back to Kenilworth on my annual trip to The national Poultry Show. Just had to visit The Old Bakery. Surprisingly only two beers on tap Friday night. Tribute 4.2% from the St Austell brewery a favourite of mine, and Wye Valley Bitter at 3.7% from Herefordshire both in excellent condition.

The service as usual was friendly and efficient. We had a great night and I'm already looking forward to next year.

Interesting pub good beer strange surroundings seemed v quite could hear most conversations between customers.

As others have said, not your traditional pub (in fact the landlady said they prefer to call it a bar) but nonetheless very pleasant. If you're not careful you could walk on by, as there is no pub sign, the name doesn't obviously signify a pub and you can't see in because of the frosted windows. It was very busy on the Friday & Saturday night we visited, with no spare seating. There were three beers on tap and I had a very good pint of Tribute. They also seem to be trialling the range of Thatcher's ciders, as there were three in the 'fridge and a flyer on the tables detailing the whole range and asking for feedback on your favourites. The Gold I had was a bit dissapointing though compared to the draft version I'm used to. Maybe it had been hanging around a while.
We did stay here, so can also recomend it as a B&B. Quiet, newly refurbished rooms (although a little on the small side) and a very good breakfast.

Went to this pub a year ago and just called back for two nights. Place was packed on the Friday night and I am not surprised, tried all six beers and everyone was in perfect condition,. In the end settled on the Tribute from the St Austell brewery. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and there was a great atmosphere. If you're at a loose end in Kenilworth this is definitely the place to be.

I had a lovely pint of Hobsons in here last week. I wish I had stayed longer and tried another ale. The bar feels very relaxed although not typically like a pub. Both staff and clientele seemed very friendly to this particular out-of-towner. I wish I had stayed there instead of the hotel I was booked at, if the accommodation was as good as the bar and beer.
Ordinary - 25 Nov 2008 22:32
Went in last week to find a mild and a porter. Hobsons and Wye valley respective. Top place.

trains2064 - 18 Nov 2008 20:05
Went in tonight had a lovely pint of Wye Valley Bitter. Was told by the landlord that it was now perminate replacing Hooky Bitter. How times change.
trains2064 - 30 Sep 2008 18:46
Tried this place after a fantastic meal in the Virgins opposite, the beer was in good order, it was one of the Wye Valley products. the place was fairly busy but in my opionion lacked a bit of charachter due to the rather hotel feel to the place with it's white and blue chequered carpet, however if you can look past that what else do you want from a pub, after all the ale was good, so i'll shut up now! definitely worth a visit.
Trouty - 10 Sep 2008 16:48
Was in for the fish and chip night it was excellent. Washed down by Batemans summer swallow which was in wonderful condition. Whilst I was in this place I hurd a couple talking about the site. The pub is brill. The fish and chips were beautiful, the beer was excellent and i'm impressed with the site. I will start reviewing more pubs but wish I had known about is sooner. 9/10

Have just returned home from the O.B. where I have been drinking St Austell 'Tinners' and 'Tribute' both super beers, not sure which I prefer. This place never stops surprising me. Keep it up.
trains2064 - 12 Jun 2008 21:10
This is in my opinion Kenilworths best all round pub. On the day of visit they were serving, Hook Norton 'Hooky Bitter', Holdens 'Mild' although this changed to Church End 'R Reg', St Austell 'Tribute' and Purity 'UBU'. They have coming in the next few weeks beers from Wye Valley (3), Scattor Rock (2), Cottage, Church End, Wentworth to name but 5. The joy of a free house meaning that if they can source a beer they will get it and the Landlords not failed yet! 8 wonderful single malt whiskeys and the best wine selection of any place in Kenilworth. Every monday night is fish a chip night and the is also talk of a pie night once a month. If at the end of the day you don't want to go home then they even have a hotel.
trains2064 - 12 Jun 2008 12:43
The 'Tinners' was super.
tributedrinker - 10 Jun 2008 22:53
Had a visit today. Often visit for St Austells tribute which is my number one beer. My luck was in tonight as I found St Austell 'Tinners'. I love this place.
tributedrinker - 10 Jun 2008 22:53
Calm, relaxed, excellant atmosphere. I got a beautiful pint of Hobsons Mild and another cornish beer 'Tribute'. Had never been in before but I recommended this place to anyone. It has a hotel!
arnie69 - 27 May 2008 10:28
After a late sunday morning stroll round the castle and abbey fields had a nice lunch time drink. Great pint of Hook Norton Best. 8/10
theboltonwonderer - 13 May 2008 11:55
Hade a new Church End beer in here the other day 'May Day' it was top notch. This place does Know how to keep its Beer. Keep it up guys.
warwickshirepubsarebest - 10 May 2008 17:53
Having walked past earlier in the day it was with antisipation that we went in. Hobsons Mild, Fantastic and served in a proper hobsons pint glass. It is those little touches that make the differance. (they had tribute in tribute glasses and Hook norton in Hook norton glasses)
a.fuller - 10 May 2008 09:41
I was a beer in the evening virgin till last week when after look through 'facebook' I found a link to this site. I'm also a great fan of cornish beer and found a link to St Austell Tribute "The greatest beer money can by" On this link to my surprise I found referance to the 'Old Bakery'. Well Wednesday Evening I found my way to kenilworth. (I live in Coventry so not to difficult). It was good in fact it was excellent. I have drunk 'Tribute' in the south west often but weather its because its only a twenty minute bus rid from home it tasted beautiful. This beer is looked after. I hope next time to go on monday night to the 'Fish and Chip' night as that sounds like a perfect combination.
bettystogs - 8 May 2008 14:43
I have been meaning to post something about this place for a while. The Old bakery is a lovely place, It is not your average pub. It is not a spit and sawdust pub yet it is not a hotel bar either. The is nothing potentious about this place. It serves some excellant beer but has 2 german lager beers on tap. loads of differant wines and soft drinks as well as 12 really exciting looking whiskeys. Best place in Kenilworth. 9/10
beersareus - 7 May 2008 16:29
Nothing very special. Cannot imagine why so many pubs in this town are in the top 4. Could there be a conspiracy?
chopin - 6 May 2008 12:30
Spent a lovely day in kenilworth. Some great pubs this is the best one. 9/10.
foreverafox - 5 May 2008 18:39
We stayed in kenilworth last week. Know I suffer a lot of pubs my husbands find and well when I arrived here I was well expecting the worst! how wrong I could be. The wine list was superb, I tried to many glass. It was nearly closing time when we left. I only wish we had stayed here. Next time my husband and I will stay here. Top marks.
sufferingwife - 3 May 2008 21:41
Was up in Kenilworth and found it such a nice suprise to find St Austell tribute. If I closed my eyes I could have been in Cornwall!
cornishman - 3 May 2008 21:26
No comment!
poppa4r - 3 May 2008 18:14
Having seen 'The Old Bakery' at the top of the table on this site along with to others in kenilworth rating high I felt a visit was in order. Kenilworth is easy to reach via public transport. I used the X17 from leamington which runs every 15 minutes. Kenilworth is an excellent destination for beer. The are so awful pubs (stay away from the centre) however within 250 yards the are three excellant pubs however the 'Old Bakery'comes out in my opinion head and shoulders abover the rest. Try the tribute it is excellent.
thechiefbeertaster - 3 May 2008 16:05
Excellant Pub. Serve lots of local Beer. Church End, Purity and Hook Norton the favorites. Also plenty of others; Cottage, St Austell, Blue Beer to name but three. All perfectly kept.
beerinwarwickshire - 1 May 2008 16:58
Lovely place. Visited on the back of a recommondation. First class place. Will be back.
davethebeerdrinker2 - 30 Apr 2008 14:49
Top real ales, really well kept and served with a smile and laugh by landlord Alan, his family and staff. No music, fruit machines or toss-pots. Few lager drinkers or builders, either, which may or not be part of the success of this delightful watering hole.
SCOOOP - 30 Apr 2008 11:37
Made my first visit to the old bakery a few months ago and have become a regular ever since. Fantastic little pub with great beer to match ( probably the best kept in the area ). used to be a lager drinker but thanks to the excellent way the beer is kept and presented those days are now long behind me . I would recommend that any pub regular that thinks real ale is not for them to give this place a try. top notch!!
reformedlagerdrinker - 29 Apr 2008 10:16
Had a visit to Kenilworth last week. The are some lovely pub but in my opinion the 'Old Bakery' is the best.
Keep it up.
davethebeerdrinker - 24 Apr 2008 20:37
After reading reviews on this site I decided to pop over and try it on fish and chip night. A very friendly place and fish and chip night obviously popular.
Had a couple of pints of Blue Bears Brewery, 'White Bear' which was a lovely clear fresh beer.
The fish and Chips were also excellent. Pitty I live in Leamington. A gem of a pub.
haseley_close - 22 Apr 2008 13:29
Yeah not bad. They serve beer and the beer seemed okay. Better than the Wetherspoons stuff which normally tastes off. But there must be something wrong with the pipes as I had the Kenilworth Craps the next day. So a pre-tty standard pub.
Chav__man - 22 Apr 2008 09:01
Visited from coventry with a couple of friends last week. This was the last place on our pub crawl and in all our opinion the best. The beer was top notch, the was a really nice atmosphere. The was one of the church end 'regs' beers which was very nice but the 'Tribute' superb. Excellent and well worth its rating. This part of Kenilworth is a real mecca for the real ale fan!
Keep up thye good work.
ticket - 21 Apr 2008 10:35
Had this place recommended by a friend at work. Found myself coming back this way. Had a lovely pint of purity gold. Wish I wasn't driving as I would of loved to try the others. First class pub.
Trainman2 - 12 Apr 2008 13:59
A really lovely pub, where they know how to serve proper beer. Great country atmosphere but not pretentious. The introduction of a fish and chip evening, supplied by the town's Alfie Grimshaw's, on a monday night, has been inspirational.
A real gem.
AmandaW - 10 Apr 2008 14:45
This is a fantastic place. As recommended I tried on Monday Evening. The tribute was fantastic and the fish and chips were excellant. Hope the railway station is rebuilt soon as will be far better to reach Kenilworth then the Bus and will located right by Alfie Grimshaws! A fantastic Evening alround.
tributedrinker - 9 Apr 2008 08:47
This pub is a real gem. Had another visit and it only continues to amaze me. Holdens mild. Fantastic. Was told that this beer is often to be found on the pumps. It's even served in proper holdens brewery glasses. Will keep you posted. An excellant pub and worth including in a pub cruel. Also had beer from cottage brewery,'Golden Arrow' and whilst I was there Vale brewerys 'Edgar's Golden ale' appeared. Every thing about these beers was as close to perfection that any of us had every found. As this pub is a complete free house then the beer range seems to be vast. I will be back.
trains2064 - 21 Feb 2008 17:22
What a place. This pub has class. They serve one of the finest pints you will find in not only Kenilworth but Warwickshire. The St Austell tribute is to die for. If you are in Kenilworth on a monday evening the fish and chip night is recommended.Delivered to the pub from Alfie Grimshaws fish and chip shop. Worth a visit in its own right.
trains2064 - 17 Feb 2008 22:35
This is a total waste of time. its like sitting in someones house. dont do it, go down the road to royal oak.
BolshevistBoozehound - 15 Aug 2007 13:02
This is such a difficult pub to rate. The beer is excellent and changes frequently which is great if you want to explore real ales. There isn't a noisy 'pub' atmosphere, so if you want a quiet pint it's great. If you want more noise head to one of the many other pubs in Kenilworth.
Cleo_cat - 14 Jul 2007 21:20
Outstanding beer, easily the finest ales in the town - with an affable atmosphere. You wouldn't stay here all night (unless of course you had a room and could look forward to and excellent breakfast).
Only 20 yards from the finery of the V's and within 200 yards of 3 more pubs and within 300 yards of 2 more. I love this town.
londinieres - 13 Sep 2006 13:33
After change of ownership now specialises in guest beers from local micros. Church End and Purity proving to be particular favourites. Strictly no smoking throughout. Interior has recently undergone a tasteful refurbishment.
bluelight17red - 7 Jul 2006 18:27
Very good beer, friendly service sociable atmosphere
foodandwine - 12 Jun 2006 09:51
You can never quite convince yourself that you are in a pub and not a hotel bar. Having said that the atmosphere is convivial (if somewhat dominated by Dail Mail and Torygraph readers) and the beer is top class - particularly the TT Landlord.

A good place for a quiet drink at the start of the evening before perhaps moving on one of the more authentic pubs in the area.

Recommended
gjs34 - 31 Oct 2005 15:37
Good beer, kept well, and served without prejudice, but with a smile.

Ensure you have a few drinks before going to the WCs - last time I was there the sir freshner was on overdrive and completely devastated your olofactory senses!

They dont sell cider in pints sadly, just the real ale, but that can be a good thing
Scarey_biscuits - 22 Aug 2005 12:51
I loved this old feel pub the moment I entered it. The good feel from all of its guests, and the warm welcome from the jolly chap behind the bar made me love the place straight off.

The Landlord is kept in excellent condition (along with all of their casks) and the atmosphere is clean and unspoiled.

Keep it up guys.
MABJamie - 28 Feb 2005 01:45
Old fashioned, quiet hotel bar, Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Black Sheep as regular beers, always in good condition. Perhaps a bit brightly lit, and it does feel as though it's your Aunty Joan's living room, but it grows on you, and is well worth visiting
Dr - 20 Oct 2004 13:35
Two room drinking area at the front of a small hotel in the oldest part of Leamington. This used to be a bakers/cafe and still has that feel. My visit on a friday evening was pleasant enough, full of pleasant middle class couples. Nice pint and free bar snacks. Voted 8
Jimbo Smith - 8 Aug 2004 20:45
Although this is a hotel bar it also makes a fine pub. Two rooms open directly off the picturesque High Street. Beer is very well kept Landlord and Hook Norton ordinary bitter. There is no piped music and, whilst a good thing, at time this makes the pub very very quiet. Note the pastiche Lowry on the wall.
