Junin.....I think the Screes has been a Robinsons tennacy since the time that they bought out Hartley's Brewery in the 1982.

This pub is now owned by Robinsons

Spent a week in the Lake District recently. On our travels, we noticed boards up in the area from this establishment advertising "food serve all day". Went for a walk with the family and turned up expecting to be able to eat. We were told that they had stopped serving! Extremely disappointing as some of our group were returning to London that afternoon and needed to eat. Not possible, despite the establishments advertising. Barman was pleasant and somewhat confused as he appeared unaware of the advertising. Management needs to get this sorted. Needless to say, out of principle, we did not stay and gave our custom across the road.

Popped across here after visiting the Strands - a bit disappointing as far as beers go. Just Robinson's beers on sale ( but a good range of 4 or 5 types) although the two we sampled were very 'average' and none of us wanted seconds.
Didn't try the food but menu looked similar in range and price to other local pubs.

Still an excellent pub, with lovely staff - but the food isn't quite as good as it used to be.
Jill Unsworth's pies great and real proper pies of old have been replaced with the dreaded puff pastry effort you get in most pubs these days.
Please bring them back!

One of two pubs situated next to each other in Nether Wasdale. This had plenty of real ales on and plenty of food options.

27 Oct 2009. Tried the Screes Inn for some food and ale. Service was fantastic by breathtakingly beautiful Irish staff and the food was on our table in no time but freshly prepared. Food selection was terrific and affordable and the quality was 100% + with imaginative fresh vegetables of the season and generous if not over the top portions. My partner must have had 1lb of the most succulent local lamb on her plate. Lassagne, a boring let down in most pubs, was top class with a side dish of lovely jacket new potatoes that you could eat like sweets and an imaginative salad. Can also recommend the whole grilled mackerel, served with deightful little parsnips etc. and the tagliatelli with optional smoked salmon garnish. All so good we returned the next night. Two very tasty filling meals with two ales at about 20 all in. We will be back next year.

Beers, this is where this pub lost a point ( more if the food had not been so exceptional). Most of the draught beers were from Manchester! Yes I know Manchester gets it's water from the Lake District but Mancherter beer in Cumbria..UGH. There was only one Cumbrian ale on tap and none at all the following night, so I just had to make do with Guinness. I do hope they ditch the inappropriate Manchester ales and contract for supply to Jennings for next year and I, for one, will drink at least three times as much.

P.S. Toilets were the cleanest in Cumbria. Well done.

Great pub - no frills, just decent beer, comfortable surroundings and pleasant staff.

Nice pub, situated in a quiet village close to Wast water and offering a choice of 3 real ales. A smart, clean, tidy pub thats open all day and has outdoor seating, with great views, to front and side. Don't forget to try The Strands over the road too.

Great pub for walkers and dog owners. Lots of little rooms. Extremely nice staff. Well kept beer (2 or 3 choices for real ale)
The food is very good pub food. Try the 2 pies if you're hungry! Jill Unsworths pies are amongst the best I've tried (and I've tried a lot!)
The goats cheese lattice is popular amongst my veggie friends.
Unusually they let dogs go in all areas of the pub. Close to being the perfect pub

Fantastic pub in lovely surroundings and they dont fuss over muddy walking boots. Its a must to finish a hard days mountain climbing in this pub. Owners and staff very nice too and the food is great and well priced.

Great pub. Well kept ales & lots of choice of malt whisky. Not much more to add to other users comments!

Very good pub. Good selection of well kept real ales and lots of character and charm. The food is also very good, and the B&B accommodation very frendly and pleasant.

Great Pub near the hills. Three Real Ales (Yates, Coniston and Black Sheep), well kept. The food is also good quality, they have a proper chef. Excellent veggie options.
YH nearby, accommodation in the Screes itself and the Strands Hotel across the road, some campsites and a camping barn. Bliss.
Need to book early for both accommodation and food, even in November!

This is how a Lakeland pub should be. Great beers, food and atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

Pubs really don't get much better than this! Tricky to find, but an absolute gem, combining great beer, delicious food, and a friendly atmosphere all in a stunning Lakeland setting. There's accomodation too, so this would be an excellent base for exploring the Western Lake District. Sit out the front for an evening and you'll be lucky if more than a dozen cars drive by - that's tranquility for you! The trip down narrow winding roads to find it is well worth it, you won't be disappointed.
