user reviews of the Windmill, Upminster

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I remember well the old Bridge House - the drugs, the threatening looking characters, the under age drinking. Never has a 'makeover' changed a pub so much. Now, The Windmill, is tastefully furnished, serves a nice, well kept selection of ales, good reasonably priced food, and attracts the right sort of person. No big screens, no music, just convivial conversation. Needless to say, the place is packed most nights. Well done Greene King!

I have been past here a few times on my way to footie at nearby AFC Hornchurch without feeling any great desire to pop in. Arriving particularly early prior to a recent match I thought it was time to test the waters, especially given the recent reports of fairly major changes, not least of all the pub name. Whilst it certainly appears to have had a fairly extensive makeover, it cannot disguise the fact that the interior comes over as bland and soulless. The main bar is knocked through into one with a series of pillars down the spine and drab colour schemes. The furnishings are a mix of the now standard modern loungey areas with tub chairs and a smattering of dining tables. In one corner there is a small conservatory type section but on the whole it is all very safe and sanitized apart from the small paneled room behind the bar which does at least retain a bit of character. At the rear is a neat and tidy, newly fenced in patio garden although it is quite small in relation to the pub. There is more outside seating at the front of the pub although the river that runs by isnt exactly tranquil or picturesque.

Being a Greene King pub, dont expect anything earth shattering from the hand pumps; IPA and Abbott being the choices although at 2.35 and 2.60 respectively, they are at least reasonably priced as was the pub grub menu. Whilst the pub appears a friendly enough place, I cannot imagine using it for any more than a pre-match pint and I doubt too many people would be attracted here out of choice unless the local competition is worse.

maybe it was renamed because of the past history, now a really nice pub, comfortable, clean and pleasant, serving excellent food in a friendly enviroment.

if you want a pub wihout, loud music, pool tables and sport on tv, this pub is a must.

people seem to think it's a restaurant, but it is actualy still a pub.

Only joking about the Windmill at the top of the hill strange they should re-name it as everyone knows it as the Bridgehouse.

There certainly is a windmill in sight ! Upminster windmill is up the hill on your left a few minutes' walk away, as you approach the centre of Upminster.
The ale in the Windmill is good quality, not cheap. Atmosphere is far nicer than when this pub was the Bridge House. The food my friends and I have had in here has been very good, especially the curry of the day and varieties of sausage and mash.

Funny its been called the Bridgehouse for over 200 years and they have named it The Windmill strange because being Essex theres not a Windmill in sight..

Now called the Windmill and has completely changed following their - er - problems. Standing area and big screens gone. Plush seats put in. No loud music. Nice beer. Unfortunately the prices have gone up, peanuts are sold in expensive little bowls, extensive food menu. Apart from our crowd, place was nearly empty last time we went in.

Reopened now as The Windmill after an extensive refurbishment. Locals tell me its a very different place with good food and a range of GK Ales.

Will visit soon

use this pub sometimes when hornchurch is boring us , not a bad pub beers ok , would avoid at lunchtime as get a fair few 6th formers from the college in and the pool tables are hogged , but not too bad , the staff seem ok whenever ive been there
and the beer garden is only a bit of decking in the car park but on a hot summers day this is brilliant for a relaxing pint in the sun

Whilst walking the London Loop, we were forced to resort to this pub for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. On the face of it, it looked OK, but I discovered a curious green gelatinous blob at the bottom of my pint of IPA and the food was decidedly average. The bar staff were stroppy and unfriendly and the service was grudging at best. The beer 'garden' (actually a bit of decking in the car park) was not the worst and it at least afforded us fine views of the local chav crews as they sauntered past in the May sunshine. My advice? Avoid this pub unless you're so hungry you're about to faint (which we were).

Could not help but laugh when reading reviews of this friendly pub. The same pub that recently had a shooting in the car park. Also whoever wrote the comment about the nice garden bar either must own the pub or be stupid woould as the beer garden is in the car park!
