Staff were extremely helpful. They retrieved my mobile when I left it after a quick drink in their pleasant, atmospheric little pub. Wasn't too packed to get a sofa seat at the time we went in either, and i knopw from the past it stays open very late which can be handy. 8/10

I'm an professional singer who came down to nottingham to stay with my sister for a week & on some occations we visited this pub as we got to know the characters very quickly through the bright pictures on the walls & the staff didn't seem to look very happy but then again we just put this down to the goth look as the guy behind the bar seemed to want to create this Impression for himself so we thought fair enough, well seemed like a chilling place to be at first, must admit they didn't seem that friendly but anyway a last minute drink, means a last minute drink!!
We wasn't In there that long before we went outside for a cigerette, there was this mean looking bouncer on the door, not the nice short one who'ld been there the previous nights as we didn't see him at all but after what we saw, you can safely bet your bottom dollar that we won't ever set foot Inside that place ever again & It summed up our conclusion that they are the most unfriendly bar people we have ever come across & anybody who doesn't agree with this comment Is just as bad as these people & are very welcome to It all!!

Yours Trudy Donnerhue... "PLEASE KEEP THE OTHER PUBS ROCKING" BECAUSE "LIFE IS LOUD & WE DON'T NEED TO BE WITHOUT"!!

WE WERE DISGUSTED TO BE HONEST!!

An absolute dive of a rock pub. MAME cocktail cabinet, but is usually too crowded to access it. Horrible staff. Disgusting overpriced beer. Open very late, but that's it's only real saving grace. Go for the Tap and Tumbler down the road instead, unless you really want to get drunker at 3.30 in the morning.

Ditto to the review below, what happened to this place !

Used to be the best boozer in Nottingham. Now, in typical nottingham style they've given it over to the young, trendy crowd with ear-blistering music, pink walls and a late license. No real ale at all. Just the bog-standard selection which they charge the earth for. Rude staff as well. If you like a nice quiet drink in a proper pub, don't bother with this place. Just like it's close neighbour 'The Blue Bell', this pub is a shadow of what it once was.

An oasis in the plethora of dross that are most Nottingham bars. Excellent job by Dave and his staff.

Utterly ruined by recent makeover. There are loads of latenight bars, and very few ordinary locals in the city centre. A real shame.

Travesty what's happened to this pub; was a proper little 'local' right in the city centre; full of character; will be a real loss

What a lovely little place. But on this occasion a big dissapointment. Some minging `Bass` was on sale that day. One of the few occasions when i developed a beer headache before i had even left the place. Clean your lines please!

beer 2/10

A traditional, lively town centre pub that knows how to keep a decent range of quality ales. Really well worth a visit.

This used to be my local when Hippy Mick was the landlord, it was a cracking pub then and still is. The only time it went down hill is when they named it after a non drinker. Who remembers the campain by SOT (SAVE OUR TURF)to keep it as the Turf in the local paper. Who was the mysterious Martin Peters the regular who was quoted in the paper, I know who he is. Oh happy days!!

This pub is awsome.Me and my house mates go every Monday to play quingo-all the fun of a quiz, all the excitment of bingo. The locals are well friendly and we come back from every visit with another story. Wicked time, wicked people, made all better by the free food on Mondays.

This is a proper pub. That in itself, given the spread of homogenised crap that passes for drinking establishments these days, should guarantee it a top rating and protection by the nation. I was surprised that it was not visited as a 'Restoration' success story, as Marcia saved the place from the terrible fate it had when it was - relatively briefly - "Samuel Morley's Ale House". Naming a pub after a life-long abstainer who considered alcohol evil is one of the crasser things that corporate pub management has inflicted on us all but it was Marcia who resolved that stupid state of affairs. I, and many others, who are not even old men (should I live that long) love the 'Turf'. The beer's excellent too!!

although merry with drinks bought in TGI Fridays (just up the road) I was able to appreciate the happy, fast service and wasnt unpleasantly forced out when time was called.

It's a pub, not a bar - this is a good thing. And it has real beer -another good thing. It's still not as good as the Turf in Oxford. But where is?

When I revisit Nottingham, I vow to revisit this pub. I was quite seriously drunk on 16th August, and my opinions /may/ have been clouded somewhat. But asked to leave? Bad mouthed? Me?! I have never been kicked out of a pub in my life :-) Marcia, while clearly a slanderer, is dead right about one thing: the city is too full of crappy chrome bars selling designer drinks in the name of progress. While this may suit the teenies and cokeheads, it sure ain't progress. So I'll be back to review this pub again, sober this time, and will identify myself at the bar so long as I get firm assurance that I'm not going to be murdered for my earlier comments :-) If I find it to be an oasis of calm, and Steve to be a friendly, sweet smelling young man, I will put the record straight. Thanks for the feedback Marcia & Steve.

This is a local's pub in Nottingham city centre. It doesn't tolerate bad mouthed fools as Loz found out when he was asked to leave. The beer is good, the atmosphere is friendly - its an oasis of calm in a city where bars are ten a penny and pubs are in small numbers.
Marcia Constable - [email protected] - 16 Oct 2002 23:08
By night, this is a depressing, stinking, old-man's boozer. It marginally improves during the daytime, in a "isn't it a lovely day, it's a pity we're in a shit pub" kind of way.
