Very good selection of beers on in here. Probably just because it was a Tuesday night but it was very quiet.

Watched all of the recent NZ V England matches here. Good breakfast at an excellant price and a plesent knowledgable crowd.

In my opinion the quality, and selection of beer is some of the best in Chelmsford. Well worth a visit.

Cannot believe that nothing new has been written about this gem since June 2011. Its my 'local' so perhaps I am biased but it is worth noting that the beer (huge range), service and food continue to be top notch. Silent Mike, the landlord, knows his beers and you will never be served an ale that is anything other than excellent. Anything delivered to Mike that is 'not quite right' goes straight back. Still well worth a visit.

Tucked away in a residential area with a good range of beers on offer, this traditional pub has the makings of a superb backstreet boozer. Yet I visited with a couple of friends at peak time, and at 9.30pm on a Saturday there were literally four other people in there. Heads turned as we walked through the door, and an eerie silence fell as the people in there sized us up. Yes, we got a decent pint but for the first few minutes we all felt really quite uncomfortable until we'd been served and sloped off to a corner to sit down. Not sure what has happened to the "huge local following" mentioned below - the Queen's Head looks to have had a makeover a few doors up, so perhaps they've all defected there. Shame because with a bit more life and a few more punters this place could be a belter.

A real 'destination' pub - head for it,and stay as long as you can because there is a lot of good beer here.

cracking pub this, great traditional & locally sourced pub food, (must try the sausage egg & chips)
great beer for everyones taste including at least 5 or 6 guest beers from all over the country.
outstanding local people that go in there, if you want a good laugh, frienly, and welcoming atmosphere, no where better.
and to cap it off a great landlord (the governor).
also if you like your cricket its about 5 mins from the county ground and sometimes the players pop in after the game for a drink or two. p. s. it also has a dartboard

An enjoyable beer, or two I have enjoyed here at one of Chelmsford's very decent "real ale" pubs. The Mighty Oak beers were in tip top condition and went down a treat.

Beer in excellent condition on my visit. 6 real eales offered, 7 if you include the ubiquitous sharp's Gloom-bar. No GK IPA here.

Friendly landlord who was seen to buy other customers beer.

Crying out for a lick of paint.

Easy to to tie in with a visit to the Queen's head next door to decide if this is
Chelmsford's premier Public House.

An admirable place. Comfortable pub with a great selection of beers. Great landlord and regular punters.

Isn't it ridiculous that you can wander the windswept streets of this County searching in vain for a decent boozer, and then find two crackers (Queens Head and Orange Tree) within a few doors of each other, ripping each other's throats out to attract the limited amount of punters this part of Chelmsford can supply, in order to survive.

Bloody barmy. If either pub goes under in this recession, and some corporate khazi in the town centre survives instead, it will surely demonstrate, beyond reasonable doubt, that this Country has finally gone to the dogs.

Real Ale Heaven. What I'd give to live in Lower Anchor Street - both the QH and the Orange Tree on your doorstep.

A fantastic pub for real ales with a huge local following. Landlord "Silent" Mike is a well known character and ale enthusiast. At least 6 ales on offer. Good solid pub grub and separate restaurant.

Proper old pub, with good beer and service - friendly locals too. You never know it might catch on! Popped in last Saturday lunchtime with an old mate of mine for a pint or two and a game of darts: left three hours later, otherwise we might have been there all evening. Good Burntwood bitter and a very nice Mild, according to my mate - two pints for just a fiver (cheap crisps too). Well done. Will be back as soon as my other half and 3-y-o let me.

I popped in for lunch here last Monday with the wife in tow. There were 4 hand pumped ales and after some deliberation I plumped for a pint of Maldon Gold whilst ordering Steak and Ale Pie. I must say that the service from the nice blond young lady behind the bar was good and friendly.

Because The Pie had not arrived when the first pint ordered was finished I had to order another, which tasted even better than the first. Bye the time The Pies did arrived the wife had the same with different potatoes, my glass was almost empty and the wife was demanding another red wine which she said was a way above your standard pub red, she cant remember the wines name but describes it as a nice warm red So a re-order was necessary.

After 3 pints and the Steak and Ale Pies we both lost much of the urge for shopping which was the point of going to Chelmsford so going to this pub saved me a great deal on Monday, for which I must thank them.

The quality of the food here is good but I did hear the landlord say that if you want to dine on Sunday it is very wise to book.

An excellent addition to the Chelmsford GBG this year. It's a traditional Gray and Sons owned pub with public and saloon bar areas. Six hand pumps with Mighty Oak Maldon Gold and Oscar Wilde, Farmer's Nelsons Blood and Oyster Stout, T/T's Landlord & Sharps Doom Bar. Good to see four local beers and reasonably priced. I was reliably informed that the pub always has at least one dark beer. The prices ranged from 2.30 for the 3.7% Oscar Wilde Mild to 2.80 for the Landlord and the 5% Oyster Stout. I also seem to remember that there was a real cider, Stowford Press. The transformation has happened as others have already mentioned since Silent Mike Collins has moved from the nearby Q/H. The pub has much sporting memorabilia with signed Essex cricket shirts and a yesteryear signed picture from the 80's. The pub is also very close to the County Cricket Ground. There are also some signed rugby shirts in the rear hall area. There are plasma TVs in both bars which were both showing the Ryder Cup whilst I was visiting. The public bar area was very lively with locals watching the Ryder Cup.

Stonehenge Pigswill, Farmers Nelsons Blood, Mauldon Gold, Oscar Wilde, all 2.60 or less. The public is a throwback to the 70s, dominated by a busy, swirly carpet, upper walls & ceiling decorated with embossed wallpaper, magnolia, of course, lower walls clad with terracotta wood panelling. Small L-shaped bar with a third of the room given over to the central dartboard, pride of place, with tables around the perimeter. Sarnies/baguettes 2.50-3.50, mains 5-6, daily specials eg Shepherds Pie 5.20, Beef Curry 5.95. The saloon/lounge side (it was here I realised Id been before!) has more formal dark wood furniture, some set for dining, a couple of chesterfields, a longer bar, red swirly carpet, breweriana mirrors, a large plasma, 2 stills (seemingly not on), & outside to a paved beer garden with a few picnic sets & a covered lean-to sporting an Essex flag. Although all the punters Wed pm were in the public, both rooms have plenty of space and a different feel if JF is correct about plans to make the whole place open plan Im not sure the result would justify the cost just lose the carpet to transform the whole. The beers were pretty good but the suggestion that most Queens Head regulars have relocated, even allowing for loyalty to the publican, surprises me greatly its the QH hands-down for me.

Recently (February 2008) taken over by Silent Mike Collins, he of Queen's Head fame and reknown, and whilst this was always reported as a reasonable local back street pub it is now transformed. Still a Grays pub but Silent has introduced additional real ales to the mix and jettisoned some of the smothflows to boot. Annoying music has gone and the majority of the Queen's Head regulars have relocated. Hopefully the old OT regulars will stay. Plans are afoot to revamp the pub merging the two separate bars in the near future. Well worth a visit.

Still a friendly and family run "proper" pub. Good food at lunchtime and weekends (and some evenings but not sure when...). Now open weekday afternoons, but with similar adult crowd, no yobbos, apart from the usual suspects there of a Friday...
They have darts (and a ladies team), crib, footy team, a golf society, music and quizes, so wander in and see what's on.
Best of all, they have London Pride on!

Friendly comfortable local family-run pub. Grays house so choice of real ale (without going overboard) and lagers etc. Excellent "home" cooked food at lunchtimes, super good value Sunday lunches (booking essential). Open all day Fri-Sun, (NB closed afternoons weekdays Mon-Thurs.) NOT a chrome & glass/IKEA showroom?full of youngsters. Summer BBQ's in part-covered patio garden.
