A bit more down to earth than the Met opposite. Pints are almost 1.50 less. Holts beer though so not the most exciting but it does do a fair few ales. Also quite an interesting interior with signs around that it was an old railway station.

Enjoyed a decent pint of Holt's black. Decent location and one of the better quality Holt's we've visited.

Hooray! The Railway is under new management and is back to its best! Everything, from the atmosphere to the cleanliness to the beer, is top notch again. I used to drink here (and do the occasional shift), but I wrote the pub off after the previous manager took over. The place was filthy, the lines were rarely - if ever - cleaned, and landlord was more interested in making a quick buck than protecting the interests of the staff and the regulars. I hope word gets around that the place is under new management, and that everyone who was exiled from the Railway during this era soon returns.

If you wish to steer clear of Steve Smith, the previous landlord (as referred to in the posts from 15th April 2009 and 10th Feb 2009), then I advise you to avoid The Griffin - his new pub - on Didsbury Road. It's amazing how some people tend to fail upwards.

Used to be a fantastic pub, but concur with view expressed by last poster. The new landlord has dramatically reduced the quality of the pub. I was once a regular, last time I visited the new guy was rude and aggressive and looks like he is spoiling a decent locals pub.

The Railway is ok but even though it's a nice enough pub it's far too small and because of this it's always packed. I'd probably go more often if it was a bit bigger.

Used to go regularly but got fed up with the landlord's over zealous kicking out tactics. Beer was normally pretty good tho.

I really like this pub. The staff are friendly and efficient, and there are always enough of them behind the bar to provide you with unusually fast service. I find this pub as close to traditional as you can get, and I grew up in Wensleydale.

I'm a bitter drinker, and the bitter is very well kept, far better than any other Holt's pub I've been in to, and at 1.85 a pint you really cannot complain.

The pub is always clean and tidy, and I have never experienced unclean toilets in there.

Keep up the good work!

Johnny Deep was not there ! It was a look alike paid to go to a party nearby and he happened to stop at the bar for a beer...

Genuine enough place. Decent beers if you like the holts taste. The odd local star can be seen having a beer here from time to time. Good place to grab a pint before haeding to the excellent 'Great Katmandhu' nepalese restaurant across the road that many consider to be Manchester's best Indian food

Its a Holts house so lesson 1 for the uninitiated is....Buy Beer!!!-Letcha divvy mate have a lager!...Holts bitter has always been said to be an acquired taste...but when you`ve got it-the Railway is the place to be...particularly as the Nelson, Didsbury no longer serve it...Get a few downyerneck, then swan in to the Metropolitan in the guise of Lord Westdidsbury -Chief of all you survey....Watch the ladies swoon!

Is this the best pint of Holt's availible? Probably. Fabulous pint, great prices and good array of different people, can be very busy at weekends but luckily The Metropolitan across the road habours most of the 'toff's' and 'students' who live in the vicinity. Well worth a look, you wont want to move down into the village

johnny depp was there

great pub... would appreciate it if fewer people visited it. Has fantastic and charitable history and if you don't know the story you shouldn't drink the beer.

Thinly disguised locals pub. Could spend ten minutes waiting to be served if you don't speak with a Mancunian bent!!

Also, dodgy house lagers - although the price is right.

Lovely little pub. Cheap beer, nice barmaids and traditional food.
