Pricey. Ouch!.

This is reputedly Maradona's favourite English pub.

Once again, I am up and away in the Orwell room for decent pub food and a chance to gaze down on the mentality of soho, like some sort of judgmental god.

All the good beers are downstairs - so check first before going up - otherwise you will be faced with nicholson pale ales and euro fizz.

Small but perfectly formed. Lovely interior and friendly bar folk. My pint of Pedigree (3.60) was pretty cheap for Soho & was quite good. As usual for me I was there quite early, and found a seat easily. I imagine at peak times it would be body contact drinking.
Queenslander - 7 Oct 2015 01:13
The Orwell room upstairs is an oasis of calm in Soho, but they do expect you to eat there. I find Nicholson's food a bit hit & miss, but it was fine here. Truman Runner on in the upstairs bar which was decent
Wilson_MacDonald - 4 Sep 2015 08:22
Apparently recent changes in management at this pub have changed the atmosphere substantially, in my view for the worse. No longer is this pub one for a few pints and conversation. Instead loud music is constantly playing interspersed with adverts for club nights. The hand pump ale options are now minimal. Another good pub ruined.

A street corner pub in the heart of Soho, this has a traditional interior that has probably remained largely unchanged for decades. It consists of a fairly small, single bar downstairs, whilst an ornate signed advertised a “Classic Dining Room” upstairs, although we did not investigate this.

The most interesting feature of the pub is probably the tiled back wall which consists of ornate coloured tiles arranged in to a number of large panels. To the right are a number of large branded mirrors, many advertising old tobacco products. The curved bar counter in one corner has two rows of suspended shelving above for glassware whilst the flooring is dark wood boards and the ceiling a deep red. Seating is minimal due to the size of the pub, with a few tables and chairs at one end and a few high stools around the bar counter. Many people were spilling out on to the street on a recent Saturday evening visit. The gents loo was unusual in that it looked like a small wardrobe in the corner. I didn’t investigate but it was down a couple of steps so presumably went elsewhere!

Beers on tap were London Pride, Liberation Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Balmy Mild, Nicholson’s Real Ale (brewed by St. Austell apparently), Stonehenge Sign of Spring and The Solution from Brains Craft Brewery. The solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk.

My favourite type of London Pub. Heaving downstairs, but I needed some food. They have an upstairs restaurant, called Orwell Bar, which was quiet. Could watch the world of Soho through the window.

Food and pint both excellent and good value.
Mappiman - 14 Dec 2013 14:41
Nice pub this, although cramped. Have been coming here every so often for a while now and especially like the upstairs. There you can really see the goings on in the nitty gritty of Soho. Apparently John Christie used to drink in here while he was on the run from the Law over the murders he commited, due to the fact he could drink upstairs away from too many prying eyes and passers byes. I think its called the Orwell bar upstairs, but am not sure.
Serlo - 4 Nov 2013 21:51
My 2nd pub of 3 in Soho in one afternoon, this is a cracking little corner plot pub that was heaving.

Choice of 7 ales from varied breweries, I opted for Sunny Republic's Shark Head @ 4.4%.

A couple of large brewery mirrors hang on the wall opposite the bar making the pub seem bigger than it actually is.

There's a rather ornate glass storage area above the wooden bar.

2 bar maids behind the small bar and food was also on offer but I didn't see any served in my short time here.

Amazing original tiles on the floor and fire place at the back of the pub near the rather small toilet entrance.
lezford - 8 Aug 2013 14:19
Was a mid afternoon when I called in recently and I guessed I had just missed the lunchtime rush. Seven pumps were on and I necked a good pint of Orkney Dark Island at £3.80 Barman was pleasant enough. I would call back again if I'm in the vacinity. 7/10
ng10 - 24 Feb 2013 16:14
The range of recent reviews seems to give the right impression. The only problem could be the size, which because of the well above average quality makes this popular bar heave at certain times of the day. One of the best places for a beer in this area prior to or after a meal in one of Soho's restaurants
Arctium_lappa - 17 Feb 2013 20:48
In there last Saturday night. Busy and cramped but worth it for the Harviestoun Wild Hop IPA. Definitely be going back.
palmwinedrinkard - 6 Dec 2012 13:53
Decent little cabin cruiser, plenty of ales on offer, jugs available for the old school drinker.
PieFace - 27 Sep 2012 10:57
Nice traditional pub in the heart of Soho. Very small place and gets really crowded. Popped in last night for a couple, plenty of hand pumped ales to choose from.
My mate tried the one called "Vicious" and it really was horrible, but that is what you get for drinking something called that.
Good pub, well worth a visit
wobble - 20 Apr 2012 14:07
Cracking little Soho pub and one of my favourites. Friendly welcome and great atmosphere full of character with interesting Victorian detailing still in evidence. Usually very busy but you can often find a seat upstairs or, as we did yesterday, visit around noon to get a choice of seats. Always a decent range of ales on, invariably in fine condition - I've never had a bad pint here. Well above average and well worth a visit.
BobOs - 23 Mar 2012 14:55
Who gives a Dog and Duck, well I do. Much less busy than when I was here last but really good selection of Ales (6 pumps available). Had food in here as well and although it took a little while longer than was expected, didn't really matter as it just gave us more time to sample the ales. Food was excellent (3 clean plates). Ales were excellent. Will be back soon I'm sure.

Was just at the Duck a few weeks back with my top geezer for few in the early afternoon. Never felt what the previous person wrote, but then again was in most likely at a different time of the day. I liked it. Thought it was quite cozy. Didn't get a vibe with the barstaff as I encountered one of them helping out a tourist on what beer came close to something that they liked. Was here last year too during the rush, but didn't have any problems.

Cheers,

The only positive features of this corner pub is that it is a listed building and it usually has a good choice of real ales. For a corner building it is a small narrow pub with sparse seating areas some which are directly in front of the gents toilet door.which itself leads down a very steep stairs to the grim w.c. The ladies are up a different steep stairs which also leads to an eating area and other bar which famously had George Orwell as one of the patrons. You would be very fortunate to find a seat anywhere in the evening. It is not at all intimate as seats are on top of each other. The bar staff always seem disinterested and gloomy. Not a great place to take a wife or girlfriend or either for senior citizens If you like standing and chatting with a couple of mates supping a good ale and even admiring the Victorian ornate mirrors and decor this pub is adequate for a pint or two.
Cricklewood.draft - 8 Nov 2011 15:16
friendly service, great selection of beers (brentwood ipa on sale anywhere is a rareity!), and stunning small interior. one of the best spots in soho.
CHELSEA_on_tour - 10 Sep 2011 09:35
Busy beautiful little pub. When I get a seat i always stay for a few otherwise its a must on any crawl through the area. Good ales aswell.

Maddona drinks Tim Taylor Landlord here don't cha know? Yadda, yadda, yadda, well I didn't see her. Anyway I've been here a few times, touristy given it's location, small and invariably packed. Beer's pretty good and will return.
Abteilung - 28 May 2011 13:02
Great pub, great beer, shame about the staff. Got a drink for myself and the wife at 10.20 on a Sunday evening. 10.21, all lights were turned on to the maximum in the pub and felt like we were sat on a stage. When I enquired about this I was told it was for my own good so I didn't nod off!
I won't ever be going there again and I strongly recommend that all others take their business elsewhere where it might be appreciated.
blarts - 15 Apr 2011 11:31
A very nice and very small pub. Unfortunately, the wife and I only visit this place in the afternoon as it gets ridiculously busy at night, especially weekends. We popped in late last friday afternoon and tried the two guest beers. I can't remember what they were called but both were really nice.
Paulb014 - 3 Feb 2011 12:45
What a great little boozer, nice range of well kept ales and good honest VFM pub grub. Upstairs bar prioritises diners where we didn't venture beyond London Pride & TT's Landlord, both in fine fettle, but others are available downstairs. Well done Nicholson's
Wiccaman777 - 22 Jan 2011 02:25
Unbelievably, despite my various forays into Soho's publand over the years, I don't recall having visited this place, until last week when I popped in en route to the underground. What I found was a friendly, relaxed and feel-good atmosphere, of the kind one so often hopes to find but fails to unearth in the sea of large, impersonal and over-branded London drinking houses. The D & D's smallness helps create a little more intimacy than its bigger counterparts, and provided one doesn't become saddled with an unwelcome punter this is a plus-point. And if things do become a little tightly-packed downstairs, there is an upstair option.

Cask ales are a-plenty here; 5 were offered and that sampled was crisp and well-conditioned. I can't for the life of me recall what it was, but trust that it was not one of the usual ubiquitous brands, and that it was on song; I can only assume that what I found was the rule rather than the exception.

There remains a trace of genuine character and exuberance that many pubs in the area have gradually lost over the years, and for this the Dog & Duck should be congratulated. I certainly wouldn't have any reservations about popping in for a pint or three in future when I'm in the vicinity.
TWG - 10 Jan 2011 17:44
I really liked this place. highlight on a crawl of the area. Fine selection of well kept beers.
LickeyEndBooze - 2 Jan 2011 19:46
We love this pub. It's great to stand outside and watch Soho go by, helps to unwind after a stressful day. Although we're from Brentwood Natalie and her staff make us feel like it's our local. Food's good value as well; won the Brewery's top award recently so must be worth a try - if you can get a table.

A mate took me here before I departed the next day after a nice long holi in London. Very intimate and cozy. Nice beers on tap. A real classic.

very small intimate corner pub, excellent pint of centurions ghost, pity the east european barmaid couldn't talk english, and didn't understand what topping up a pint meant, so only gets a 5
littlecon - 21 Nov 2010 11:34
Just along the road from the Crown and with a greater range of ales. (Landlord, Pride, Hobgoblin, Sharps Cornish and Yorks Terrier).
I had the Terrier and it was good.
I visited just after lunch and it was not too busy. A good job too as it's a small place with not many seats. There might be more upstairs, I didn't look.
I liked the decor and it's definately a place with character.
No problem with the service at all.
outtamehead - 31 Oct 2010 04:54
I want to like this this place but every time i go in there
I am always confronted by the most disintrested staff in london.
please cheer up
becks007 - 22 Aug 2010 09:33
went in their before going into Ronnie Scotts for a Jazz gig , the beer was in good nick but boy was it pricey , a 3.7% was 4.25 and a 4.5% beer was 4.60, ouch
gphillman - 12 Aug 2010 17:09
Ive always liked this pub, always lively only let down slightly by the run of the mill offerings which on tuesday were london pride, doom bar and tt landlord , it is though well kept. Best pub in soho.
Picasso09 - 28 Jul 2010 22:40
Classic London Nicholsons pub - a listed building now.
We must have got lucky when we visited in the day, staff ok, beer TT landlord decent and not too expensive considering the area - food surprisingly decent - I had the steak and ale pie - a proper individual pie and not the puff pastry nonsense you get in so many places these days. We sat in the upstairs George Orwell bar with a view of soho below.

Scottie_chorlton - 1 Jun 2010 10:15
Very busy little boozer, it was full of loudmouthed teenage girls last night.

Mate was shortchanged by the barman too and when challenged he didn't even apologise. Won't be rushing back.
Stoned_Moses - 25 Apr 2010 19:12
PACKED - but nice enough - slightly annoying having a member of staff tell everyone off outside every 3 minutes for stepping over the yellow line on the pavement but nice enough, like most places you really need to go at a quiter time ot get a proper feel for the place.
adamwalsh - 2 Apr 2010 11:32
I visited here with the wife on saturday evening. I usually opt for the TT Landlord but decided on Thwaites Nutty Black as it wasn't very strong (3.3% I think) and we were due to quaff a bottle of wine at a nearby restaurant. It was ok but I've had a lot better black ales. I will definitely return (we always do) and have the TT Landlord.
Paulb014 - 1 Mar 2010 12:56
a really lovely little pub, great interior, good beer and decent punters, but I won't be visiting again any time soon. why? stroppy bar staff. last night two bar staff on duty, busily talking amongst themselves. I couldn't catch their attention so my friend took over, calling down to the bar to them. when Mr Stroppy finally deigned to come over (it turns out they knew we were waiting to be served but were ignoring us because they were in the middle of a conversation - a simple 'we'll be with you in a minute' would have been nice) he refused to serve us as he felt that calling out to catch their attention was 'incredibly rude'. though his ignoring us for several minutes was apparently not. go figure. no time for such nonsense, so we took our custom elsewhere. such a shame when a decent boozer is ruined by the staff.
reluctantlondoner - 27 Feb 2010 13:55
So close to greatness it hurts - often very busy, beer very good, but why can't they ever serve a pint which is actually full and what's with the competition to hire the most miserable bar staff in Soho? (A competition the Dog and Duck is close to winning). The management should visit the Harp in Chandros Plcae to see how good a very busy pub can be.
The_Man_From_Soil - 22 Feb 2010 13:51
Maaaaany years ago this used to be a regular haunt of mine and I went back last week to see how the years had treated it. Well, nothing can take away the fact that this is a gem of pub architecture - offhand, I can't think of another like it. But it seems to have lost something. I had a pint of a beverage called Golden Best that I should think bumps up against the Trades Descriptions Act - Dullish Mediocre might have been nearer the mark. And I did not get the impression that the young lady behind the bar derived much pleasure from her job. Even when, as I suspect, your first language is not English, it is not too hard to master "Good morning, what can I get you?" and "Goodbye, thanks".
guayabera - 15 Feb 2010 13:50
Smallish street corner Nicholsons pub situated in the heart of Soho. In marked contrast to The Three Greyhounds, from where I had just come, the Dog and Duck has a splendidly preserved Victorian interior which earns it a place in CAMRA's National Inventory of Unspoilt Interiors.

As you enter through the side entrance on Frith Street, note the decorative floor mosaic and the fine wall tiling, some of which notably features motifs of thr two animals in question. Worthy of comment also are two large advertising mirrors and a rather curious mini snug to the left of the side entrance as you go in, which was presumably partitioned off in days long gone.

The Dog and Duck is of course the pub where Madonna, allegedly, developed a penchant for TT Landlord. On my recent Saturday afternoon visit, Landlord was joined behind the bar by the ubiquitous London Pride, Lancaster Amber and, most notably, Ringwood Fortyniner and Thornbridge Kipling. Both the latter two beers were in fine form, particularly the Thornbridge Kipling - a fine pale fruity bitter with an ABV of 5.2%.

There's an upstairs bar and dining room - the George Orwell room - which acts as a useful overspill during the inevitable busy periods. There's also a perilous descent to the downstairs gents.

This is probably my favourite Soho pub - best visited if possible in less busy periods - particularly if you want to admire the decor.
JohnBonser - 27 Jan 2010 08:44
Interesting small pub, steeped in history.

Beer OK TT Landlord although there was a Scottish "burnt malt" beer - not to my taste, but enjoyed by others.

Toilets in basement reeked - very unpleasant really......needs something sorting out.

Will probably give it a miss next time.
pick_e_tippler - 31 Dec 2009 18:59
Visited here yesterday (Afternoon) as part of the Nicholson "Dick Whittington" Ale Trail. Had phoned ahead to ensure XL Tee Shirts were available (I was assured they were). However was met with most unfriedly Bar man who insisted they only had a few L size left. I advised hime they did have XL and upon investgation came back withn said items without apology. Reasonable pint of London Pride (had to ask for Top Up. Other beers available were TT Landlord, Hobgoblin, and TT Goldedn. Good music playing at acceptable leve (you could here yourself talk). However I shall not be busting a gut to go back as for one thing it was so small downstairs.
Bitter_Man - 1 Oct 2009 10:58
Nice Nicholsons pub in the middle of Soho. As others have said it is tiny but that adds to the character. Good range of ales as you would expect.

One of the few "normal" pubs in the area.
twineyboy - 16 Aug 2009 20:54
Tiny place and bizarrely the bar is against the outside wall of the pub. The back area has 4 or 5 tables and the front bit seating for another 10 or 12 but anything more than about 30 people in here would be uncomfortable

Luckily for me numbers were well below this on my last visit. It's a nice pub and the sort of place Soho needs to persist in order to maintain a bit of character. Would definitely return here as it was a nice atmosphere.
murgatroyd - 21 Jun 2009 23:11
Nicholsons house, always try and get a seat upstairs with great views over the Soho street scene ; sup at your leisure. The ground floor seating area is also interesting with fine glazed tiles on the walls,a bit like an old fashioned Sainsbury's.The pub interior probably deserves listing. The mirrored bar area is small and hectic when the pub is busy.Beers on offer TT Landlord,London Pride and GK IPA.The Landlord was in good nick and ,if you get a seat, this can be a relaxing venue for a session.
Bucking_Fastard - 19 Jun 2009 10:03
Fairly standard Nicholson's - narrow, devoid of authentic character and verging-on-short pints. The guest Caledonian Raspberry Fool was OK, but not exactly in the best condition.
rpadam - 24 Apr 2009 23:29
This has been my favourite Soho pub for a while now. It's a lovely building, the beer's usually good and not too expensive, and I can often find a seat upstairs. Unfortunately the service is so bad I'm considering a change in allegiance.

At least two of the women working there seem to treat customers as an inconvenience, especially if you want food. I could also do without the loud music at weekends - is that really what anyone wants from a Sunday night drink? This place could be near perfect if only the staff had a better attitude. If the situation doesn't improve I'll be going elsewhere in future.
Ghoti - 5 Apr 2009 12:40
Recent (first) visit satisfied our party, compared to many other pubs in vicinity, this one we rated very good, both for food and atmosphere. Reasonable pricing in view of portion sizes and for the drinks on offer.
michelparfoissage - 4 Mar 2009 13:34
This place has really gone downhill. Its used to have a large choice of ales and people spilling out into the street.
Saturday 22nd, room inside and a choice of only 2 ales Landlord being the choice. Beer OK but the loo stank so badly it made me feel sick.
Wont be visiting again unless all the other pubs nearby close.
CambridgeBlue - 24 Nov 2008 09:39
quick pint on our travels around soho , Why is it famous for sausages?? is it a butcher shop in disguise? I thought it was famous for being a tiny little bar and normally only good to visit on a summers day so you can stand outside in the sun ( 2 days per year) was ok , but its def lost some of the character it used to have.
The_Pub_Inspector - 10 Nov 2008 21:25
Cracking little Soho pub - friendly welcome and great atmosphere. Always busy but you can often find a seat upstairs. Enjoyed fine pints of Hobgoblin and Halloween Surprise (well, it was October 31st!).
BobOs - 3 Nov 2008 00:18
Small but perfectly formed, the Dog & Duck is a welcoming pub with what I would say is an intimate atmosphere. It has some of the best examples of Victorian tiling still around, and some of the dark panelling looks to be original. The Thwaites Lancaster Bomber had just gone off when I was in there, so had to find solace in the Timothy Taylor Landlord. Such hardship!

Didnt have a main meal, but the sausage sandwich and chips for 4.95 made a pretty good snack. Very simply, I think this is the best pub in Soho.

RexRattus - 22 Sep 2008 16:15
Fantastic "hole in the wall" sort of pub. It is long and narrow and with soft interior ligthing. This coupled with the victrian mirrors, tiling, wood panelling etc give it a lot of character and atmosphere. Good range of ales and I had a top pint of Sharps. Service was prompt even though the place was very busy. A great little pub.
tarkatherotter - 10 Sep 2008 15:06
I note some of the more negative reviews below but no problems encountered on my visit. London Pride, Landlord and Thwaites Lancaster Bomber on, one pump unused. The beer quality was good and 2.95 for this location is acceptable too.
A historic pub worth a look for the fine tiled interior, supplemented by large ornate mirrors. A small seating area to the rear with shelf seating opposite the bar. The Orwell bar and dining room upstairs gives further options. Various sausages seem to be the pub speciality. The descent and return from the gents is somewhat perilous, as the door opens across the steep staircase.
Maldenman - 7 Sep 2008 10:36
For me, despite its narrowness, frequent overcrowding and overspill onto the pavement, this is the best pub in Soho. Or maybe that's even a positive feature - it's a really convivial pub. I like the Victorian tiles and mirrors, and the old fashioned bar furniture. I like the generally friendly and relaxed manner of the bar staff - how on earth do they keep it up, with so many customers in such a small space? But most of all, I like the ales. They're always well kept and - for this area - reasonably priced. A reliable pub offering a great pint of Tim Taylor's Landlord every time, and very occasionally, a place to sit and drink it!
foxski - 6 Sep 2008 19:11
Turned up 5.45pm Sunday (25/05/08) to find them out of the beers that make the places reputation, just left immedialtily, couldn't even console myself after a bad day at the football. Gonna hope that tyhe review below and my experience was a bad weekend and it will be back to normal soon!!
loveleedshatebates - 26 May 2008 08:22
Yesterday (Saturday 24th May) I took friends to see this, one of my favourite pubs in London, only to wish I hadn't because of the lazy slob that was manning the bar.

No smile, no greeting, moving around like we were being done a favour, the barmaid made no effort to make us feel welcome and every effort to make us feel unwelcome.

None of us could believe how obnoxious this individual was being. Though we had ordered drinks, because of her attitude, we cancelled them before she had a chance to start pouring an left.

Could the manager/owners please do something so that no one has to suffer this again!
kevins1966 - 25 May 2008 11:09
Cracking little Soho pub thats oozing charm and glorious old fashioned bar decor. It is tiny so getting a seat is nigh on impossible, but its worth it for the ale. Al fresco drinking in the summer, if we ever get one, also good for spotting the luvvies, Brendan Gleeson was in on my last visit, mean spirited sod didn't buy me a drink though ! If you are around Soho its a must
wellinformed - 30 Apr 2008 17:29
A Good Soho Pub.
Get there early: grab a seat at the back and enjoy the ale and your coveted seat.
Get there late: prop up the bar and enjoy the ale and a pickled egg.
There's a pavement and an upstairs bit too.
What else could you need from a Good Soho Pub?
swifthalf - 15 Mar 2008 16:11
Decent beer, good prices for the area, good sausages.
loveleedshatebates - 19 Feb 2008 10:18
Tiny pub that heaves on a saturday night. Dont expect to get a seat you will be out on the pavement drinking. Very good selection of ales to choose from and yes the loo's need sorting.
CambridgeBlue - 12 Nov 2007 11:13
Nice of the landlord to wait until we'd had a full afternoon session, pouring money in his till, before sending his rottweiler barmaid outside to tell my friends and I that we were being too noisy. Sort the toilets out, sack the rottweiler and let drinkers enjoy themselves, for crying out loud it was ten past five in the afternoon, we were hardly keeping people awake.
usualdog - 1 Nov 2007 11:50
Went into this place saturday.

its a very charming looking place, and the bar staff were freindly and helpful. They had 'old peculiar' on, but it was an absolutely criminal effort, flat, stale, stinking of vinegar type of affair. to their credit i had it changed easily enough, explaining it was tosh. the 8 stone russian bar maid had a taste, then realised how ludicrous she probably looked trying to appear more knowledgeable than a rather fat 6ft 2" midlands meat head, and kindly agreed with my professional opinion that the beer was shite.

the staropramen was off so i opted for the stella, which was average.
BolshevikBoozer - 13 Aug 2007 17:13
Good selection of RA,s,{6] abit pricey at 2.85 a pint ,but very quick service there were three behind the tiny bar last Thursday ,a nice bar, well kept as is the beer
dogbolter - 30 Jul 2007 21:54
This is a great little place, completely unpretenious and a great place to meet people due to the fact that it's so small. Staff are completely true, if they like you they like you if they dont they dont, which is how it should be, none of this 'customer-service-smile-at-everyone-wetherspoons' crap.
About Westminster Council - they are trying to shut down many pubs in this area because 'locals' are complaining, locals meaning rich people who want to live in this area but don't appreciate the area's vibe late at night. Unless it's a heavily regulated area most places won't stay open later and the dog n duck is not in the right area (altho it's very close). Not the pub's fault.
Go here any time of day, do what you want and be what you want. It's a much better experience if you have no hang-ups
andy33brixton - 18 Jun 2007 14:37
This is another traditional little pubs that attracts a few regulars and some very lucky tourists who want a "real pub" experience.

The downstairs bar is very small but the staff and locals are pretty friendly so its never been a problem.

EskimoJoe - 4 Jun 2007 12:39
PS I absolutely agree with Mr Bean below, they do shut much too early, but I.m told that's not their fault, but Westminster Council being control freaks. Does anybody know the full story?
M.O.G. - 9 May 2007 15:22
What a gem of a pub this, with a great interior that is also very cosy. Things are better still with their attention to real beer and that means good guest ales too. Downstairs is more interesting than up but what a lovely pub and it is one that Id certainly head back to when Im in the area again.
LovePubs - 25 Apr 2007 16:29
Great pub, one of my regular haunts when passing through Soho. Beer selection usually good, always a pleasure to see Tim Taylor, but also brews new to me. Gents is a bit hard to find if you dont know where it is. Decor is lovely. More spacious bar upstairs.
yer_barred - 12 Apr 2007 23:33
It has a fine tiled interior and seems to offer some of the less common real ales. I think I had Black Sheep there last week. It can get very busy but I had a choice of seats at noon last Thursday.
clissold345 - 11 Apr 2007 22:57
Shuts far too early for 2007, especially in it's location

mrBean - 9 Mar 2007 00:17
Great pub with oodles of character and amazing decor a stone's throw from Oxford Street. The ale is always extremely well kept and although they have a guest beer on it's hard to stay away from Taylor's Landlord as it's just so good.

I haven't eaten here myself but friends who have say the food is good pub fodder.

All in all a solid, quality boozer that gets everything right.
mrfear - 8 Mar 2007 12:44
Had a nice pint of landlord last night but the barman gave me two pints with really large heads. He topped it up only after I asked, shouldnt be doing that in a place like this. He must be new. Training please!

Nice litle boozer (with emphasis on the 'little'!) which does a guest ale. Definitely one of the better pubs in the area.
Darren_in_the_City - 12 Dec 2006 14:02
A little gem of a pub. Great location and usually one two very good beers on offer.

Not ideal if you have a fear of confined spaces..
Andrew_Smith - 5 Dec 2006 11:33
They owe Stonch a pint or two next time he's in, since, like Iceinthecider, I was srongly influenced by his comment (that and convenience) in choosing The Dog & Duck for a pint or two on a rare visit to Soho the other day. On first impression, I was slightly apprehensive regarding both the size and the ambience of the place, particularly since I had 2 elderly ladies with me - but my fears proved totally groundless, as we managed to find a seat straightaway, and thoroughly enjoyed the excellent T. Taylor Landlord, and also the genuine mix of age, class, nationality and probably, for all I know, religion and sexual orientation among the clientele. Didn't see Madonna and didn't giveadamn.
earlydrinker - 16 Nov 2006 13:10
I tried this pub several times in previous years and wasn't impressed, could never find the T.T. Landlord on, but something has changed and they have started taking pride in their beer. Now I go to this pub every time I am in Soho, its the only place that I can trust to give me a good pint. With 'try before you buy' you cant go wrong.
jackvervacke - 14 Nov 2006 22:49
Made a point of propping up the external wall of this place for an hour or two last week, on the strength of Stonch's ringing endorsement. Visits to the bar revealed a great looking place - we were highly envious of those merry drinkers ensconsed in the tiled area on the left, which was reminiscent of the best bits of The Crown Liqour Saloon in Belfast. The charm was sufficiently pervasive that we were happy to loiter outside, occasionally switching a pint from one hand to the other for thawing purposes in the wintry conditions. Safe to say that I WILL be going back for a proper, hopefully more sustained, and hopefully indoor visit.
iceinthecider - 14 Nov 2006 15:19
Very nice little pub with plenty of nice tiling and charm. Beer has been good on all my visits and particularly good on my last visit. Upstairs by the window is a nice spot if you like people watching. By the toilet might be better if you're gonna get well and truly swerved up!
mitomighty - 3 Oct 2006 16:51
This pub is seriously underrated on this site, for me personally its the heart of Soho.
anonymous - 6 Sep 2006 23:12
Cosy little Soho pub, part of the Nicholson's chain, which means a reasonable range of well-maintained ales, with a 'try before you buy' policy. Usually very busy, with the clientelle possibly swelled by punters hoping to kop a view of rumoured customer Madonna. I don't usually spend a lot of time in womens toilets, but my girlfriend reported that there was only one cubicle in the ladies, with a queue and no toilet roll. In fact she reported that she had to use the cardboard inner tube for wiping purposes. I somehow doubt if Madonna would put up with that.
ChrisF - 4 Sep 2006 12:14
Have just been to this pub for a quiet lunchtime pint and read of the paper.
It may just have been bad luck but they had a delivery going on right in the middle of the bar.
The noise was awful. I should have just stayed in the office.
The rest of the pub was not all that and I won't be going there again.
Barda - 31 Aug 2006 14:08
Very Friendly staff, nice to see the try before you buy policy in operation. Nice ales and fast service. Stand outside on the street and soak up the Soho atmosphere.

pezza132 - 24 Jul 2006 10:59
Pleasant enough, feel as if in the nitty gritty of Soho when in here; especially when on the upper floor which is a pleasant little bar with a good view of the goings on on the streets of Soho.
LOL81 - 12 Jul 2006 23:06
Lovely little interior, and unlike most Nicholson's pubs often has interesting guest ales on. Gets busy. Ate here once, distinctly average but I remember the service being very, very friendly and leaving with a big smile on me face.
anonymous - 8 May 2006 16:11

Too quick to shut :(

Come on Landlord! 24-hour drinking!
CheekyShepherd - 8 May 2006 16:09
Awesome place, well run with a very small team. Staff have changed and are generally friendly if not too conversant in English!! Great bunch of regulars & fantastic ales which change often. Please never change!
Celt - 17 Apr 2006 14:45
Very small and cosy corner pub. Quiet on my mid afternoon visit but would imagine it would get crowded in the evening. Best pint of Landlord for miles.
apa - 23 Feb 2006 14:50
This tiny Victorian corner pub can be an absolute treat when it is not too busy but rather unbearable when crammed (as it often is). The bar area is limited with just a few seats at a ledge opposite. The pub is full of very ornate tiling (spot the dog and duck tiles) and a few unusual advertisement mirrors. Away from the bar area is a small room with a few tables but you need to get there early to blag one. There is also an upstairs bar that offers a bit more room and a good view of the surrounding streets for those who like to people watch. Good selection of beers (Nicholsons range) but can be poor service (expect to have to go through a topping up ceremony with the pidgin English bar staff). Whatever the faults, this remains one of my favourite Soho pubs.
RogerB - 2 Feb 2006 15:13
A small but good pub with a really interesting history - check out the tiles.

The Orwell pub upstairs is tiny but very relaxed. If you can get a seat in the window, it's a great way to spend a smoke free evening in Soho.
anonymous - 14 Jan 2006 17:44
Small pub on the corner just like lots of small corner pubs in soho. Beer is ok and not too expensive. Traditional bar snacks as well. There is very little space though and it's best late at night. Next!
little_alec - 28 Dec 2005 10:49
Had a bit of a refurb a few years back and the opaque windows went, but managed to keep most of the character... the beautiful old mirrors and tiling for instance. I can't be the only one to think that the place has declined in service a bit since Madonna bigged it up on the telly (and does anyone REALLY believe that she's a regular?)... the Taylor's in here ain't all that (and I should know... I was born and brought up 100 yards from their brewery) but I've had some decent pints of other stuff here. It's a good pub, though.
Albert_Campion - 4 Dec 2005 00:51
Probably best in warm weather when you can stand outside with a pint of Madonna's favourite tipple, watching the dealers doing brisk trade across the road. Probably one of my favourite Soho haunts though.
Terry_W - 22 Nov 2005 22:22
Went to the upstairs Orwell Bar this weekend. Great place. Cosy, intimate, relaxing with soft background music, cushions on the comfortable curved benches, light and airy with views of people bustling around on the streets outside. Noticed that it is now part of the ever growing and decent Nicholson chain so beer choice has expanded. Probably the best pub in Soho.
SilkTork - 16 Oct 2005 11:04
Used to be a fantastic pub but went sharply downhill a few years ago. Crappy service and beer not always kept properly. Suitable alternative to the Crown for getting drunk at lunchtime during the summer.
Heapster - 14 Sep 2005 11:04
Small, cramped but charming pub with little decorative details adding character. Beer (Landlord) was not in best of conditions, but drinkable. Value for money platter of chips and dips. Has, obviously, gained a wider audience since Madonna revealed on the Ross show that she likes to wear a flat cap and order "A pint and a half of Landlord please."
SilkTork - 13 Sep 2005 10:59
The pub itself is delightful, small, smart, old-fasioned looking, tastefully furnished; only problem is it seems to be popular with the type of posh, arrogant Soho media types who never seem to do any work after 1pm. No Taylor's Landlord on handpump on my last visit either, had to make do with the ubiquitous London Pride.
Rich66 - 11 Aug 2005 23:32
Love the place.......especially as they are one of the only pubs in Central London to serve Addlestons cider!

Never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be served no matter how busy the place has been.
Knocker - 24 May 2005 17:17
What has happened to this wonderful pub??????? Having been out of town since January, I have returned to see this once brilliant pub being run into the ground.
It looks like there has beeen a complete change of management and staff AGAIN!!!! Having seen out the last Landlady and finaly getting a Landlord (albeit young) this pub was the place to be and the atmosphere was back to its prime. But now the Staff are rude and grumpy and don't seem to know how to create an atmosphere - POOR SHOW - now frequent the Three Greayhounds around the corner
jsonhughes - 16 Mar 2005 14:45
having left the coach & horses on greek street due to no ale, i stumbled across this little pub. very quaint and does a good pint of Adnams. some horrible groups of people in there with no manners but then it is xmas party season so they had probably been on it all day. I would go back.
mr_lunch - 21 Dec 2004 13:37
Overrated desperately dull place. Full of tourists - it must be hyped in one of those tourist bibles for rich american tourists as being "authentic" or something, and so they arrive in packs of four after seeing some equally overrated West End musical and the ugly kids are wearing "University of Florida" shirts and they all drink a half pint of Carling or some bullshit. Or even better they arrive after 11am and look bemused when they're told it's closed.

Madonna even drank a Timothy Taylor Landlord in here once. Give me strength.
travis - 7 Dec 2004 17:04
Lovely little place with a lot of original tiling and a range of real ales. Crowded in the late evening but then it was the beginning of December.
beeronaut - 4 Dec 2004 18:24
What a great pub!

Can anyone remember "Eddie" the italian chap that worked there a few years back. What ever happened to him?
Sally - 11 Nov 2004 00:19
Fantastic little gem of a pub, the staff are all very warm and friendly people who have been there since the change of management over a year ago. If u go in the pub in the morning and again in the night you will probably see the same bar staff behind the bar! This pub has so much to offer. Highly recommended!! By the way, the bar staff arent as rude as i would be if i worked 12 hour shifts!
Frank - 3 Nov 2004 10:55
Nice little pub. With regards to the comments about the staff, Ive gone in there with others so am not looking to strike up a meaningful conversation with the person who is serving me a drink.
Jack Knight - 24 Aug 2004 12:02
This might be a nice pub if the bar staff weren't so miserable
andrew1961 - 19 Aug 2004 16:17
Dont agree with below sniving comment. The pub is small, yes, but it is steeped in history and has character and let me tell you its a breath of fresh air around here to not have the usual " All BAR ONE" ETC ETC,NICE BOOZER!
Nick Hamer. - 30 Jul 2004 18:45
Dingy little pub with foul smell, moody bar staff and shit atmospehere in general!
ALISON - 23 Apr 2004 11:02
Used to be a great pub until it changed hands about two years ago. Beverage service has suffered dramatically and the staff are disaffection personified. Great shame.
Ben - 1 Apr 2004 19:55
Nice little pub - however it's badly let down by unfriendly bar staff who seem to have lost the will to server people with a smile of any sort.
vicc - 8 Mar 2004 09:54
Tippy-toppy Victorian boozer with cut glass mirrors a go-go...Unfortunately Madonna told Jonathan Ross that it was her "bloomin' local, guv'nor" or something recently and that she drinks Tim Taylors...cue the brewery chucking out the old wooden stools (triangular..nice!) and replacing them with lady-friendly chairs and huge liberty print cushions. Cushions..everywhere! and knick knacks..knick knacks on every available flat surface. Luckily, Madge has taken her cor blimey spoon-playing activities elsewhere and the cushions and knick-knacks are gradually falling in the fire/getting covered in beer/disappearing into people's handbags. Normal service will be resumed shortly. Great upstairs bar which no-one seems to know is there; possibly because it's hidden in a cupboard and often locked up.
seb - 18 Feb 2004 12:02
Classic old style boozer with ok beers. Let down by a barmaid who must have come last in a personality competition
andrew1961 - 7 Dec 2003 14:37
Once a truely excellent pub (makes the Pillars of Hercules on Greek Street look positivly huge). However, since a change of management it seems to have lost something.
