user reviews of the White Hart, East Cowes

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The White Hart has now been closed by the Red Funnel ferry company. I'm not sure what their plans will be for the building. But I doubt they will be too constructive.

After a visit to Cedars in Wootton, we concluded our Isle of Wight jaunt at the White Hart, which is conveniently located opposite the ferry port. In fact you can pop in for a drink whilst waiting to board. It's a corner pub that looks quite dilapidated from the outside. The inside is much the same. There was a motley crew inside, with the pool table and jukebox seemingly the centres of attention. The gents' toilets seemed to have a minor flood. The solitary ale was Dartmoor Jail Ale, which was ok. We'd saved the worst pub until last on this occasion.

Well, what can i say? on my entrance it was like walking into a scene from the Adams Family!,jesus, its rare to see such a collection of inbreads and freaks.id imagine they make use of this wet fart of a pub due to the fact they havnt been made welcome anywhere else and for good reason!.this place would be ideal for those with bad hygiene who are regular victims of bullying ,socially unaware nerds who graze in the praise of likewise fools! CHARITY!!,its of know suprise they support it! as every one of the locals are likely to recieve it! .quite obviously has no policy on drink driving laws and flaunts it daily.if this place was ever to shut, you could always meet up with the 'locals' drinking there special brew on the steps of the town hall.

Very quiet when we popped in for a quickie, a lot better and tidier than when we visited 5 years ago. The back bar has been done up but only one ale on that didn't set the pulse racing. Pool table for those who want one, regulars seemed friendly enough but I would reccomend if you want ale go to The Ship & Castle around the corner.

A different real ale every week, well kept , along with good cider and German lager. Pool table and a good juke box and friendly locals.

I agree with KatieLou who drinks far too much blue wicked, the white hart is a great locals pub with some good beers on tap, pool and darts, and is very friendly and does indeed raise a lot of money for the local hospice...Hi to KatieLou and Taff!!

We visited this very friendly little pub on May18th as it was the shortest walk from the excellent campsite known as Waverley Park. ( BTW This site is quiet, clean and with great views). On announcing we were camping there the landlady's partner, a rough hairy biker!! said the prices were up by 20%.
The few locals at the bar all chimed in with chat while my wife and I tried the local ales. It was latish anyway and soon there was only 5 in the bar. I never looked in the lounge.
It was really really friendly, a good boozers pub and I guess no food at any time. No airs and graces, false decor or pretences. Well worth going there rather than across the water, which we did the following night as part of an organised pub crawl from The Kingston Arms (Super little pub and well out of town) finishing at The Anchor (Hellishly crowded but they did have live good band on)

Newly decorated and looking a lot better, worth a try for the german lager and good people who drink here.

I've only started using this pub during the last few months for a pint or two after a cycle ride, bar staff very friendly (and they don't mind me coming in covered in mud). Been to a few pubs on the island that all seem to serve the same beer, any pub that serves Warsteiner gets the thumbs up from me. If you don't mind having a chat with the locals and enjoy drinking something other than fosters, kronenburg and john smiths (they still sell all of those) then this is a good pub to try. Friendly dogs too.

I am a regular (probaly too regular) of this pub and want to have my say....

This pub is one of the 'real drinking pubs' left in Cowes, East or West - everywhere in Cowes is being taken over by 'the last stand of middle class Britian who have no money but like people to think they have' Margo Ledbetter from the Goodlife types and wannabe yachties. Happy to decorate pubs in knotted rope and flags and serve very expensive/low quality beer and make you wear those horrid yellow wellies :-)
Respect to real Yachties who all live in Monaco with page 3 models so im told! Thats my citizen smith bit over - power to the working class shove your yacht up your ****
Over Cowes Week we hosted one of the top class Yacht teams in the world who drank in the White Hart rather than in Cowes for all the reason's above, they were looking for good beer and banter again this year

Here in the White Hart the local's are friendly and enjoy some silly banter at the bar - see above :-), remember that if you don't want to join in go sit down or go in the rather well decorated back bar, if you like a laugh stand at the bar and get stuck in. I suspect anyone who rates cafe's (I cant call it a pub) like the LifeBoat would never warm to this pub. As for the smell - DOH - that's the Sea not the pub! Probaly smells similar up the Lifeboat (the sea does go right round the Island you know even up the river medina) or it could be the smell of the microwave meals they serve!!

Any 'local' knows the East Cowes smell on a hot day, low tide when the seaweed is cooking.

Great to hear from our aussie buddies, G'day to you too mate, I wont mention the cricket. A rather jolly hello to all those who use the White Hart and also the Victoria Tavern also in East Cowes, real pubs with great beers and genuine drinkers. Where else offers German lager on tap, and different real ales every week, pool table, darts and a great juke box!
I recommend this pub to all the real drinkers out there - who like good beer and company...those who don't go to the Ship or the Lifeboat.

This was the local for my Dad before we came to Australia in 1966, so I figured I had to try it out for myself. My wife and I had many an enjoyable beer here when visiting family at East Cowes in 2003. good bunch of blokes that drink here made us feel right at home. (G'day Sean, Dusty,Lester & Glen). great atmosphere and service. this was without a doubt the friendliest pub we found in East Cowes, and the only one that didn't treat us like we were "bloody yachties" because of our accents.

Oh dear is this place still open? This pub is located next to the East Cowes ferry terminal, but dont be tempted to in as this is a local pub for local people. On my visit I felt that I was intruding even though I am local! One end of the bar smelled like an open sewer! No thanks, never again. Try the Ship and Castle or the Lifeboat.
IslandDrinker - 21 Aug 2005 15:13
a very generous lot of people in this pub, cheers!

beer expensive? this must be S and D?
lester - [email protected] - 22 Apr 2004 23:44
Beer is not expensive compared to Wimborne chief.
Mr Magoo - 19 Apr 2004 14:15
Although I don't drink real ale, the cider is expensive too.Trevor said I was ugly, i thought that was a bit rude.
Lester - 18 Apr 2004 10:34
Where do I begin, I had a 50 minute wait for the ferry, what could be better than a pub right on the ferries doorstep.

WRONG, my experience in this pub was one of the worst of my drinking life(over 30 years), the bar staff was down right rude and iggnorant, i asked for service they were busy playing the fruit machine, they looked at me as if i was asking for something strange, and then i had a chioce of a real ale or john smiths, no contest there! real ale please, the glass was dirty the beer cloudy and it smelt of rotten eggs, as did the pub, well rotten eggs or cats urine. I complained it tasted off and the guy took a sip out of my glass and said it was ok, I paid 2.50 for a sip, and now this rude bearded man was drinking it, i walked out, i don't recommend this pub as round the corner was the Shipand Castle with friendly stalff, cheaper drinkable ale and a nice smell, booand hiss to all at the White Hart, especially the bearded barman.
