Eat in here Often and have tried most things on the Menu. The Pasta is my Favourite! The food is always Good, served Quickly by friendly staff. Served Jermeia Weed Beer in a Novelty Jam Jar Glass on my last visit. Nothing is ever too much trouble my only complaint is that i never won the meat raffle.

we came in yesterday for sunday lunch after my husband had popped in earlier in the week. perfect roast dinner with fresh vegetables and good portion as well. the mixed grill was huge with good eggs (which normally in restaurants is a let down) cold wine and ice cream cake for pudding . this is a good pub.

i read the reviews on this page surprisingly. I have just had a Meal at The Sportsman with my wife and son and it was Great. I had Steak, my wife Fish and chips and we thoughrougly enjoyed it. The toilets were clean and the Beer was good (i had a golden hen, my first try of this, there were 3 ales to choose) got a free drink with the kids meal. the pub has a good feel, we have been before here twice and never lets us down.

The place has gone downhill fast. The clientele are loud and obnoxious, the food is cold and disgusting, the toilets are unclean and constantly in disrepair and the beer pipes are dirty. Since Beth left, sadly this pub is a serious letdown. Avoid unless you like cold food, eggy pints and loudmouths.

Just been taken over by another manageress, now settled in and keeps running out of beer (original) or its not right.Friday and saturday night if you like loud and out of tune karaoke then this is the pub for you :-( previous manageress made the the place friendly but now going downhill,at this rate its only a matter of time before the maidens will be the better pub.

a friend told me there was a rat pack tribute performing and so we thought we would check it out. What a fantastic time we had. Excellent singer, Lovely people and a Great Atmosphere!! A lovely Clean Pub, with Fresh Flowers on the Bar and a Bottle of Wine for 7. I will certainly be visiting again!

Popped in whilst visiting a friend nearby, mainly because we wanted to eat. Pub grub was a little slow (40mins from ordering) but good value and quality when it arrived. Green King pub (like one opposite, so a bit of a monopoly) the Morlands Original Bitter was in good condition and at 2.40 well cheaper than most pubs round my way, but Abbot Ale was not available. Staff friendly as were group of customers playing cribbage, who pointed out a handy exit for our friend who has difficulty walking.

Just had revamp and a change around which to regulars took a bit of getting used to,now more of an eating establishment than a pub but looks to be on the up with new landlady, worth a visit.

Chef now sorted and seems to be bringing in the customers still has a few slow nights but noticably busier, one or two loons but they are harmless and even give the place a bit of character, overall not a bad boozer.

Pub just been taken over by new manager lets hope he get his act together and sort out the few problems the pub has been experiencing,as previous reviews suggest some staff seem to spend more time outside smoking rather than serving which gets those waiting to be served a little annoyed.Has a couple of real ales on tap(not my cup of tea)which seem to be kept well, food has gone downhill but manager should find this an easy fix, overall not a bad pub and gets varied and frendly customers in.

Could be a lot better without much effort.

Having just returned from eating here all i can say is i won,t be eating there again. The chefs clothes were a state if his clothes are that dirty what must his kitchen be like food was cold and you did,nt get your moneys worth. I must say i won,t be returning

Since the new chef has taken over food has gone right down in this establishment. The new chef would burn water. Just by looking at the leftovers on the plates that are left there for hours for bar staff to eventually pick up says it all.The bar staff can be rude at the best of times if you can find one, as there always outside smoking. Maybe just follow the sound of bad language as this seems to lead you to the bar staff.Always bickering in front of customers and running regular customers down.

The staff and locals are friendly, with none of the hassles usually associated with being on the edge of Whitley.

The food is good. The beer is well cared for. There is regular entertainment and a good quiz night on Sundays.

I normally don't do pubs! However, the Sportsman has seen me a few times in the last few months. The landlord is keeping the riffraff out and has tranformed the pub since he has taken over.
I like the lounge bar. The public bar is far off, so there is no disturbance from the "younger" clientele while they enjoying themselves (and why shouldn't they?).
Even though the food is via a chain (Giant), the chef and landlord will make it special if you ask friendly. I get my food hot and spicy. They do a nice vegetarian burger, not the usual vegetable lasagne and mushroom risotto one get in other pubs as a vegetarian.
I really can recommend this pub.

We regularly eat here, the food is good, the landord and lady are friendly, flexible and cheerful and the Gurkha cook is good.

There is a decent pool table (well looked after).

WIFI internet is available for free, good for moving the office down the pub!

I nice cheese board would go down well with some white Port.

And whatever happened to cheese & onion rolls in a perspex box on the bar?

Regular and varied entertainment and regulars are treated as such.

Had a lock in once, but couldn't buy drinks because of a water problem!

Large eating house (Hungry Horse type menu, but food looked fairly decent, actually), another pub festooned with flatscreens blaring out football and competing with music over speaker system - one or the other, please! Suffers from being on edge of Whitley estate (especially since all the pubs on that estate have now shut) and also proximity to the Maidens almost directly opposite in that clientele can be, ahem, rough and ready. Still, if you can catch it at a quiet time, the beer is decently enough kept, even if it is GK and the food may be worth investigatine.

Clean and enjoyable GK pub a short walk away from the uni.

Two ales usually on (Morlands and a GK-approved guest voted on by the regulars), which are kept fairly well, food available.

Forward-thinking landlord is putting on a variety of entertainment, good luck to him.

A nice little place, worth a stop.

Nice lounge bar, the public bar is ok for a game of pool and the locals are friendly enough
