Really friendly lasses behind the bar and the suspicion that this was a student den was confirmed by the presence of a set of masked youths - the sorts you find in party shops and not military supply stores thankfully. 'They don't know how to keep ale there' warned one witness but our pints went down well enough. Atmospheric location near a bridge and an entrance that you'll have trouble finding.

One of the best pubs in Aberystwyth. Busy on the weekends because of the live music, and popular due to its late opening.

The prices are pretty steep, but for real ale drinkers its a good bet. There are always 3 different beers on, one being a guest ale and so constantly changing. The beer is always kept well, and served by staff who actually know how to pour it!

Must have been a while ago they had the TVs, they don't have any in there now.

They've now got TV's. Sold their soul for few geeks watching Top Gear. What will Julian Shelley think?

On a more positive note, the beer range has improved.

Not one of my favourite pubs in town, but does have the unique selling point of board games. Is the only place in town that I have been stood outside waiting for it to open, and on a Sunday. Has some good beers and an excellent beer garden for summer drinking.

No MILD here but it does have four real ales on offer. Background music was a pleasant blues rock CD. The outdoor courtyard with view of the river is a good point.

Probably the best pub in Aber for a late drink. Has a great atmosphere and a nice outside seating area overlooking the river Rheidol. Clientele are of the Masters/Phd student variety, which ensures a generally pleasant atmosphere and has hireable board games with a piece missing.

Usually has a majorly overpriced guest ale/foriegn beer. The only other drawback is that it is far too smokey inside and that its popularity, combined with a small bar mean that it takes ages to get served when busy.

Poncey boozer with over-priced second-rate beer

Best pub in Aberystwyth and one of the best in the UK with a brilliant atmosphere.

This place has it all: students and locals, Welsh and English speakers, intense debate and those just out for a leisurely drink. Good live music on Fridays and open late most nights. Excellent outdoor seating area overlooking the River Rheidol.

The only downside is that its popularity and low ceilings means that some nights it can get very hot and stuffy.

Fantastic atmosphere. Regular music, quality environment. Heavy slate flooring, low ceilings and a very old building. A perfect place to while away hours with friends whilst in this seaside town. Also serves very acceptable pizzas.

rummers is good for a quiet chat over a drink but as a lot of the seating is outside, at weekends it can get quite cold! gets full later when all the pubs have closed

Old mill by the river, with beer garden and views over Aberystwyth marina. Not in the least bit pretentious. Usual range of beers & lagers. Live music (e.g. local bands, folk, jazz etc) and late licence at weekends. Good atmosphere as it's never full of townies
