please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Mid week early evening visit in April. Think there were 5 real ales on offer, the one I requested went off mid serve, so had to make a second choice. The barman made a recommendation and let me have a taster before I made my mind up. I think I ended up with the Big Tree Bitter (Dunham Massey Brewing), so a nice local ale and very enjoyable it was too.

The front bar area was full but there was plenty of seating to the rear. This seems to be mainly used as a dining area but there wasn't an issue with sitting down with a pint.

Nice pub, plenty of outdoor seating for the warmer weather too.

warm welcome. Several rooms with rustic appeal. 6 ales, including local. Bar and restaurant food. Good handy location.

This pub wasn't quite as good as I was expecting. It was our only pub we had chance to visit last night on the way to Manchester. The location is convenient for the M6 and M56. Yet it is located in a rural setting in what looked like a very nice area, despite it being dark! The pub itself is quite big. There is a dining area as you enter from the car park and a bar area to the front of the pub. Service was friendly. Beers on were Coach House Swan With Two Nicks, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Wychwood The Dog's Bollo*ks & Dunham Massey Dark Mild & Little Bollington. We were hoping for more Dunham Massey beers and the mild seemed to be getting past its best.

Nice country pub. The beer is great. As for the food - the last two times I ate here I was disappointed, particularly today as the food was tasteless and mushy.

Visited for the first time this afternoon. Really busy with car parking at a premium. Food looked good, and served in large portions. Two Dunham Massey ales available, both in good condition.

Had a meal and a couple of pints. Its been 20 Years since I last went in the Swan with 2 Nicks. Food fantastic, Staff Very pleasent and attentive. Beer nice and it made a change not to pay Surrey prices. Recommended.

in here again recently - it was a Sunday and was heaving. Despite that got served fairly quickly and had two pints of Bollington Bitter. On the food front, the Cheese & Onion crisps with pickled egg were to die for...

A beautiful pub in a lovely peaceful location, but can get very busy. Situated in Little Bollington (near Altrincham) close to Dunham Park and just a few short yards from the River Bolin it's in the perfect spot.

This pub has seen major extensions over recent years with the food/restaurant side of things now seemingly it's main focus.
It consists of a small but cozy front room, with a rear bar that stretches right back to incorporate the restaurant area. Outside is a huge decking area which is lovely on sunny days. The front bar is dimly lit, but has lots of character (and a real fire in winter), the back room less so. Refreshingly, there is a complete lack of games machines & TV's in this pub which makes it ideal, if like me, you enjoy conversation or pint in peace & quiet.

On the evening of my visit (23/6/11) there were 6 beers on tap, T'Taylors~Landlord, Wells~Bombardier, Dunham Massey~IPA, Dark Mild & Big Tree, Coach House~Swan with Two Nicks, a good mix and all were in good condition.

I found the bar staff exceptionally pleasant & helpful, with full measures being served on every occasion.

As for the food, I didn't participate so I can't comment, but I've read the mixed comments prior to writing this. All I can say is, it did look & smell good.

The clientle seems to be pretty mixed, but with a leaning towards the better off amongst us. It's also very popular with walkers & mountain bikers on sunny days and weekends.

The Achilles heel for most pubs are the toilets, no such trouble here, they too were spotless.

In a nut shell, this is a lovely old country pub, which is hard to fault, but for me there was one major set back however, the price of the beer. Hey, I don't mind paying a little over the top, but at over 3 a pint, the prices here are expensive.

I have registered here because I can no longer find the Swan with Two Nicks website? I logged a review on the food back in November 2010 as it was despicable.

Anyhow we returned yesterday, the 20th of February 2011 not my choice but I have to say it was an absolute revelation!

The food was fresh and hot and in my opinion, the staff great as usual. I do not know what has changed but I have to say the food was absolutely fantastic and a joy, now lets not confuse the comment with a Michelin star restaurant but this is pub grub and by far the best I have ever had and the whole group which their was 8 of us agreed. Well well worth a visit, I hope they keep this up as we will be back many times.

Thank you,
Justin StalyVegas

Pub food...what a waste of time...always 'Brake Brothers'...and so girly!. Ale here tho was good - good selection of Dunham Ales, house brew was from Warrington brewhouse Coach & Horses. Ale of the night tho was the ever present Timmy Taylor Landlord - top notch.

Got to give them 10 out of 10 for the cask ale. Menu seemed slighty pricey.

A pretend gastro pub with high prices to match, pity they just serve terrible frozen food.
Good range of beers though including the excellent and local Dunham Massey.
Scottie_chorlton - 29 Apr 2010 16:42
If you just want a drink the best place to go is at the front, where there are two distinct areas with comfortable bench seating. Good to see the pub offering a range of beers from the local Dunham Massey Brewery, although they're not cheap!

Went for an early evening pub meal on Friday 26th June 2009. Myself and 5 others.
Place was reasonably busy, reasonably clean in bar/inside eating areas. Decided to sit outside and eat.
Had Bread and oil/balsamic starter. Bread was tasteless and 'pappy' 5/10
My partner had steak and ale pie.. her comment.. so-so.. pastry dry and tasteless, meat fine, gravy nice. Chips - appalling.. bland, tasteless and bone dry.
My Crayfish Penne pasta with spring onions was really bland. No pepper, wine, garlic or hint oftaste - just lots of cream. Pasta cooked ok, Crayfish ok. Had side order of chips, left them half eaten.
Value : Poor
Simply put.. I COULD HAVE DONE MUCH BETTER!
This place has been recommended to me.. i wont eat here again. Simple food at Cheshire prices,, some people must be easily pleased.
If you would like some genuine advice. Get the chef from the Hand Hotel in LLanarmon D.C to come and show your chef how to do the simple things well and you will see what i mean.
I am an ordinary bloke who appreciates decent food. I recognise when i'm being had.. Come on Guys.. Cheshire desrves a couple of decent gastro pubs. The Swan at Marbury is a more pleasing pub meal and at the same price.
Service was good, prompt and the bar staff were efficient.
bigdoghog96 - 26 Jun 2009 23:00
6 handpumps including 3 dunham Massey brews and landlords. However lacked the country pub atmosphere I expected. On a bank holiday monday many disgruntled people seemed to be waiting a long time for their food. Didn't look very appatising so glad I wasn't eating. Staff not exactly welcoming or friendly.
doncaosdelanada - 25 May 2009 17:58
I think Gordon Ramsey would have a lot to say about the pubs extensive menu! We have never eaten here before and were astounded by the number of dishes on the menu - obviously heavily reliant upon frozen foods. The only way to describe the food we ate was 'school dinners' disguised as' Gastro Pub' food prices. It was incredibly expensive for the quality of food we received. Really disappointed and will never return nor recommend.
bridgells - 10 Apr 2009 16:59
Food-pub in pleasant village which is well-situated for walks and trips to Dunham Massey. The place is long and narrow, with semi-traditional furnishings and a bar room at the front. A good range of beer from nearby Dunham Massey brewery, as well as a very good house beer. Food is moderately priced but has been excellent on both my visits. Doesn't feel like a chain bar to me, just a pub that has shifted its emphasis to food to survive whilst retaining excellent beer. Heartily recommended.

I am moved to comment again - after a bad case of the runs following a meal there on Friday. This pub has pretentions at being a gastro pub, but the menu is way too large for all the food to be fresh - and the food just isn't up to it.
It seems to be run by the cast of Hollyoaks, and it feels like a chain. They had no Dunham Massey beer when I went which was disappointing.
That said there are much worse places to be than with your dog next to the fire in the front room (much cosier than the back.)
Much room for improvement needed though

Nice pub overall, very geared towards food but the beer is decent and worth visiting to try (Dunham Massey Dark was spot on yesterday). Dogs are allowed (which is great), just a pity some of the annoying owners aren't tethered outside!
citizencains - 8 Feb 2009 11:59
Nice enough, decent beer and food.
Plenty of dogs about.
I am rating at 6, so quite good but room for some improvement.
mrBean - 22 Jun 2008 22:28
Fairly nice country pub. Food ok. They let dogs in the front area. Seems to get very busy especially in summer, as they have lots of tables outside. Beer ok - they do their own bitter
It feels like a chain pub - staff seem to be young. If you want more of a 'local' pub try the local and cheaper Vine
Scottie_chorlton - 11 Mar 2008 17:41
Paid a shocking visit to this pub a few years ago, and refused to return! Bit the bullet this lunchtime and was pleasantly surprised. Staff were friendlier and more efficient, food (we only ordered baguette and chips, but v tasty and v good VFM) arrived v quickly, and there was a good selection of real ales. Will def call back again.
Nykohler - 27 Aug 2007 17:48
Went last night (Monday) and had an excellant Steak and Ale pie with real chunky kick ass home made chips. Nice selection of wine. 4 different reds by the glass. Ideal for midweek visit but i'd avoid it on a Sunday as its a favourite destination for day-trippers.
stretfordlad - 5 Jun 2007 11:19
Food ok. Pub food in bar. Baguettes & chips all round. Swan's own bitter goes down well. This pub likes dogs, happy with them in the bar, dog bisuits & water bowl available. Beer good. dogs ok. I'll be back

I was there on August 7th and the service here was extremely slow, I waited over half an hour for a Caesar salad...not worth the wait, I don't think I'll be rushing back.
Rosaleen - 20 Sep 2004 11:02
This pub was voted 'Pub of the Week' in the Manchester Evening News August 2004. Write up commended food available. I know of many people who enjoy dining here.. definitely a recommendation - have never had any problems with service in past 6 years we've been visiting!
Jenny - 6 Sep 2004 18:18
ha ha .. i totally agree with Kathryn about the food... service took far too long and the Special Pea & Ham soup arrived - minus any Ham. Staff seem to be a right bunch of numpties

Its a pleasure to visit both at lunch and in the evening and enjoy a meal, drink and conversation in the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The food is excellent and the name sake bitter well worth it

We went to this pub for a wedding anniversary lunch as it had been recommended to us, however our meal was very disappointing. The one starter we ordered was forgotten, and the main course was taken away so that we could eat the starter. 30 minutes later the same main course was returned, now looking inedible with congealed gravy and burnt peas! We asked for another, which did not come; eventually we were given our money back. At no time did the staff apologise for the fact that one of our party did not have a meal that day or for the very slow service. I wrote to them that day (19th February), as I was extremely annoyed at the way we had been treated, but so far have received no reply. We will not be returning there.

Good pint, typical country pub but someone will have to drive. You'll be lucky to get a taxi out here.
Great in the summer as right on the doorstep of Dunham Park, although it didn't seem to open some afternoons.
Last time I went in,it still had candlelight and a cash register with old money
