Any news on the place - is it opening again?

Hmm, strange but I keep getting drawn back to this pub. Atmosphere is great, but does get crowded very quickly (well, it is quite small inside). Adnams is still of good quality, bar staff are cheerful, food still good.

Couple of tiny gripes - the music can be quite depressing (think its linked to some sort of mood system on the player), and the messing about with the lights (nice and bright, then dimmed to almost darkness, and any variation in between over the evening).

Been back a few times and still very welcoming. Adnams still good and so is the Bombardier.

If hungry, dare you to get through the Money Burger - 100% meat with a bacon and cheese topping, with chips and salad.

Popped in the Barss Monkey last night - such an improvement on the Burleigh. Def more of a bar than a pub, but much more welcoming. Small ares (3 seats) up beyond the bar so you can sort of lord over the rest of the clientele.

Small but cosy is the best way of describing it. It may be 3.30 for the lagers (amstel and Heineken), but the Adnams was 2.70 - they also do Bombardier. Theres one cider and a few other drinks on tap, but didn't see any guiness (may have missed it on my quick look along the bar).

Food looks reasonably priced, but didn't get round to trying any.

Yep, it's open again and is a welcoming place. More of a bar atmosphere with mainly high stools, a few sofas and armchair seats. (I still regret the name-change, though.)
One real ale - an Adnam's when I was there - and standard lagers. Short wine list.
Prices have rocketed to pay for the complete refurbishment. This is now a 3.30 a pint pub, as with all the other new establishments in Victoria. I guess prices were generally lower round here for so long because the area was so run down.
Not tried the food yet but looked okay, and not too pricey.
I believe it's a free house, so let's support it! Recommended.

I've just walked past this place and the Brass Monkey is definitely open for business. Didn't have time for a beer but it looked standard ponced-up decor - with not overly-expensive bar meals. Where do all the old geezers go? To the Wetherspoon's up the road?
mickeyturn - 9 Jul 2007 13:32
Renovation work has been underway for some weeks, involving the gutting of the entire interior.
Sadly, yet another cruddy, dated and ill-advised name change is on the cards. The words "Brass Monkey" have been painted on the exterior wall at second storey level...
When will they ever learn?
Will post again when it re-opens.

currently closed (again). believe the licence is on the market...

In a 70's timewarp. Must be the only pub in Central London that still has a Watney's pub sign outside (see photo)

A pub we had always avoided but as we needed a quick lunchtime drink we gave it a go. Dark, dingey and very basic, plus we were the only ones there. Actually we quite liked it as it is completely different to everything else around and there was a very nice Aussie barmaid. Lots of people could be seen looking in through the murky windows but none were brave enough to venture in. Didn't try the Gents.

I popped in here for a quick one last night and oh my goodness, I dont think Ive been in a proper old mans pub before, certainly not a London one. I actually quite liked the place. Its basic beyond belief (though there is a jukebox) and to suggest its a little tatty in here, would be phrasing it mildly. Its not a pub Id normally visit and Im not going to pretend that Ill be here again, but The Lord Burleigh has a certain charm to it. I didnt really notice how bad the toilets are, but can add that one of the regulars tried to sell me a Rolex. He was about 70!

Was in here last Friday (bout 10pm). Including the barman and me there were 3 other people in here. However, it looked like they had cleaned the place up a bit - well all except the 'famouus' gents loo that is.
FattusBlokus - 20 Jul 2006 20:16
never made it into this baby

Incidentally... in case you were wondering, i've jsut been reading about Lord Burleigh... aka William Cecil, one of the most influential men in the Elizabethan Court... amongst other things, he was largely responsible for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. It does crease me up that a man who bestrode 16-century England has been immortalized in the form of a hole-in-the-wall boozer on Vauxhall Bridge Road..... but then...you never know, he might have been a pub man... who can say?

now re-open. but unchanged.

Toilets are poor and the pub could do with a clean up. But its a 'real regulars' establishment and better than a lot in the Victoria area.

Good, Cheap Food as well !!

Visited 11 Dec 05. My annual pilgrimage to this odd pub. Yes, the gents' toilets are horrible. Yes, avoid the real ale.

Just enjoy the general wackiness of this place. The bar staff and the locals are barking mad, each year there is something to surprise me. Unfortunately I didn't have time this year to see if the juke box has changed, I hope not. Any pub that allows you to listen to "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs, has my vote.

Funny sort of place, but a bit of a tonic after all the nouveau pubs elsewhere around Victoria. The beer's not always up to snuff though.

This pub is disgusting. Popped in this evening whilst walking past in search of a pint. We ordered two pints (Bombardier and a Pedigree). The barmaid was scoffing an onion bhaji with one hand whilst serving with the other. Both pint glasses were greasy with bhaji fat and both pints were foul. Will not be setting foot in this place again.

i actually like this pub. yeah i agree the urinals are something out of the past. always got a nice welcome here. it is a sort of old people pub. its does give that impression. but its varied. nice place to hide away for the night.

having been back to the pub i have been asured by sandy that the gents toilets are going to get sorted soon!thanks sandy!!!

i have drunk in this pub for a number of years the owner big sandy is friendly as his is staff i do agree that the gents toilets need sorting out other than that it is great old style pub worth a visit.

Great little pub, Fine selection of Scottish songs on the Juke Box. Beer seemed fine to me, but the toilets do stink as does the Dundee Utd mug hanging on the bar counter. Worth a visit.
Kris - 25 May 2004 12:59

WHAT A PUB! Whats wrong with the gents? So they’re on a slope and the gutter style urinals happen to be on the top wall. I am relieved and my feet are now warm. Bonus!
TOps - 31 Dec 2002 13:24
I think this is a horrid little pub and not worth the rating which it currently has. The beer is poor, the decor appalling and generally one should try (at all cost) drinking in this boozer.
Oliver - 30 Dec 2002 10:03
Small pub, full of characters. Friendly atmosphere. Well worth a visit if you're fed up with going to the same old chain pubs all the time. Although the gents toilets are minging, apparently.
