user reviews of the Railway Hotel, Burgess Hill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The new refurb is fair enough (weird giant benches in the front bar and why has the fireplace been covered over with slices of log?) but I'm not sure that a new focus on food is the answer. This is about as traditional a railway pub as it is possible to get.
There is no garden, only the yard out the side, always full of smokers.

The menu is quite long and I do wonder how a place like the railway can do it justice. If you had a family/work/birthday meal planned, why would you go to the railway? There are plenty of other pubs etc in a 3 mile radius that can provide more in better surroundings.
A more concise and value driven menu may have been a better idea.

A recent attempt has been made to get live music in, which was a good idea to get crowd back in the evening but I understand that a new manager may be appointed and that has been stopped.

I fear the Railway may fall between two stools and end up not satisfying anybody - ie not enough beer drinking and not enough eating. An idiotic situation bearing in mind the location of the place.

Nice refurb and the best selection imported larger/beers on tap! Nice place for a quite drink with your partner when you have just got back from London. Have yet to try the menu in the new resturant section of the pub.

nice place after the refurb but not much of an atmosphere, cheaper than some of its competitors which is good

First Sunday of each month, Great Comedy Night. Spot on Bar Staff. Belting atmosphere. Locals make you feel welcome. Food 2nd to none. Live Sport with a great atmosphere. Heard the rumours about the ways things used to be, and can HONESTLY SAY never seen any trouble at all. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

Brilliant pub for a friday night. Large dancefloor as pubs go, average priced drinks, DJ on both Friday and Saturday - Dean on a fri, James on a sat. Both experts. Friendly bar staff, friendly bouncers. Absolutely packed at the weekends, bouncers let one in one out it gets so busy. People spill out of all doors at 1am due to its' late license.

A total refurb has changed the atmosphere and (fortunately) the clientele. Good food with quite a good range of dishes and prices to suit served every day until 9pm (7pm Fri & Sat). A couple of Real ales well kept are normally on. The quiz is now every Wednesday, Live Music now every Saturday night, DJ Fri & Sun (Sundays do sometimes havew Karaoke).
Garden extended now with a great sun deck at the rear - a real sun trap !
Good staff service with the whole place being kept spotless.
The best in the way of Pubs in the area by a long way - worth a visit.

Was in there last night (reopening night) really good night, bar staff were good and there was a good crowd a few people who had attitudes but most people were good!

Hi everyone, lop here. I'm normally in here on a Friday night, love it me, its a really cool place to be, sometimes trouble in there, but i manage to keep out of it nowdays!
So, if you see me, come say hi, i'll be the drunk in the corner, ten bob a job ;)

In need of new bar staff - younger, more conversational-types would be nice!

I started going here about 6 months ago, and really enjoy it. I have never encountered trouble, but they do have bouncers now. The 80s music on Fridays is a bit naff however!

My local a few years ago, now tend to go to the top house. Had a few punch ups there myself and my mate had his ear bitten off by a pikey in there, otherwise not a bad boozer especially when England play and the landlord does his body slides off the pool table. Good breakfasts as well.

Not as bad as its reputation would have you believe (probably because the old clientele now go to the Hogs Head looking for a fight.) You'll be lucky to get a pint of something else other than lager but plenty of TV's showing the premiership, a couple of pool tables. Often packed but service is usually prompt.

I used to run this pub in 1987, It was always a bit rough but the people were good. The bunch from the Top House were always a pain but I really enjoyed my time there and in Burgess Hill. Haven't been there for a while though.

Cripes - always was a nasty place (tho not as bad as the Top House). They look at you funny if you walk in there - stay too long and you might never leave.
If you want to know why people slag Burgess Hill off so much, go there. Otherwise, don't.
