Had a very good Sunday lunch here last week, top notch friendly service and even when my pal complained abouth a very small piece of pork belly, they brought him another complete one..with a smile...excellent all round good ales and wines, but I do agree about the accoustics, very noisy, especially on the Sunday what with all the crouch end newbies and yummy mummies out displaying their brats to all...
But overall...a good place, worth a detour

I'm not sure who was behind the refurb of this place, but they've somehow turned it into a cacophonous echo chamber. I assume all of the wood and tiling means the acoustics have been affected during the revamp. Sadly it means it's a struggle to hear anyone around you on a busy night as a result. Shame as it does LOOK pretty grand!
lookmother - 8 Nov 2012 17:36
second visit since it reopened. some good things particularly the ales but a couple of real downers.
the acoustics make conversation hard when its busy. the sound just echoes off the brick. when its like this turn the music off as it just makes it worse.

big moan about price of soft drinks. i never moan about prices but to charge 2.10 for a half pint of coke (from the gun) is outrageous...more so when a pint is 3.10. they wouldnt do this with beer as there would be a riot (can you imagine them charging 4 for a pint of 1664 and 3 for a half) so don't take the piss with soft drinks....the management should be ashamed of themselves.

The Maynard is currently closed from 22 Oct 2011 for about 3 weeks for a another refurb - mostly they plan to add al fresco seating at the front and generally tart it up a bit with better dining facilities and hopefully brighten up the garden. Matt the current manager has moved on to another GK pub but Darius and Danuta are expected back when it reopens. Meanwhile the existing punters wander the streets of crouch end in search of a decent pint.

The Maynard was the perfect place to hold my 60th birthday party - easy to find and in the heart of Crouch End. The courtyard at the back was a great setting for a summer evening and later on we made use of the indoor area too. Lots of guests - many of whom were local - commented what a great venue! I was able to enjoy my party because I had so much help from the staff there who planned with me from the beginning. Lauren, the Head Chef, discussed my preferences for the menu with me well in advance and produced a wonderful vegetarian buffet - all home made from the freshest ingredients. Rosa helped serve and was always around when I needed her. James was incredibly accommodating, helpful and friendly, too. I sailed through the evening relaxed and happy. Just as it should be when you are hosting an event. My thanks to everyone who helped make this such a memorable occasion. I'm not one to go to pubs very often but if you're looking to have a party in Crouch End, this really is the best!

We held my son's Christening party here yesterday and we were really happy with both the service and the food. We booked out the Function room for about 80 people and the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly both in the planning of the event and on the day. We chose to have a buffet and the food was absolutely delicious and there was plenty to go around. We were really pleased with how the day went and very grateful to the staff for all of their hard work. We could not have been happier

Spent a sunday afternoon here, one of the most family friendly places to go in crouch end, reasonably priced food and the specials where definately home cooked and not your usual micro rubbish. much better value than some of their neighbours. a must for a relaxed family outing.

This is a big Greene King pub serving up IPA, Abbot, Old Speckled Hen and St Edmunds alongside a selection of standard and premium lagers. I found the staff to be ok, but the general ambience in the pub was verging on depressing. There is a plasma screen, but there is no sport advertised so no Sky Sports. I found that the slow jazz music was sucking the life out of me, so thankfully I was able to finish my pint in the reasonably sized paved beer garden out the back of the pub.

This place aspires to be a trendy gastro pub where everyone eats tapas and listens to acoustic sets, but in reality it is bland and forgettable and I cant see myself returning.
Strongers - 23 Jun 2009 13:24
This is what happens when Greene King jump on the trendy train. Dull and uninspired.
Planner_21 - 3 Jun 2009 01:35
Really very disappointing, go to the Kings Head - brilliant and better value!!

Really very disappointing pub. Spent the time to book out the 'function room'. Put a tab behind the bar, got overspent by 50.00 got told by the bar maid that 'that usually happens' asked for some service but the bar did not respond. Valued colleague slipped over, men's toilets flooded, go told that we were out of line to bar staff. Colleague took pictures of colleague slipping on wet floor. Poor night, really disappointing. Crouch End can do much better.

It was OK, food was good, music too loud no atmosphere, people keep themselves to themselves, not a place to go to meet new people, very cold in there too, have to keep your coat on all night. should be a traditional pub, but is now too formal
Mollymoon - 23 Nov 2008 21:49
All of the atmosphere of an Ikea showroom in here, but with POUNDING music.

Usually not too bad, but it was like an eastern European club in there on Saturday with an over-eager barman thinking he was DJ Scooter.

Hint: when your pub is half empty, maybe it's time to look at the music choices?
lookmother - 6 Oct 2008 15:47
At the moment probably one of the better places for drinking in Crouch End (which ain't saying much)but it has a decent beer garden and range of drinks and the
service is always pretty good and its kept in decent nick in general. Nice Pub for Day Drinking. THough i nearly fell of my stall when i got charged 3.70 for a pint of peroni....did not even come in a posh glass:-)
jonbob - 9 Sep 2008 17:13
went in one glorious sunday afternoon and had a couple in the beer garden. the staff seemed very pleasant, the beer was good and although i didn't eat the food looked above average. BUT the decor for me was trying too hard to be contemporary and cool - what's wrong with the traditional pub of yesteryear? why tinker with tradition? i prefer the queens (see my review) and the old dairy (more my local). saying that, i'd go back and wouldn't be unhappy if it was on my doorstep!
rhood - 3 Sep 2008 16:05
Nice enough ...but Greene King have "overdone"
....was better previously ?

But is other half's local so can't say too much :)
W980501 - 2 May 2008 11:45
Mmmmmm
Not really my cup of tea, bit gastro for me.
That said, had quite a good night in here on Saturday.Guinness was ok, and the service was good.
Not sure about the bloke wearing Monkey boots though.
A big no no on people over 11
tottenhamsean - 5 Sep 2007 17:31
This has changed totally since my last visit about a year ago. It used to be an unpretentious and slightly scruffy local's pub. Greene King have now given it exactly the same rather over-corporatised pseudo-gastropub makeover that befell Ye Olde Black Lion (the Lion as now is) in West Hampstead. Very busy on the Sunday afternoon when I visited but lacking any real charm - there was also a rather noisy and dominating jazz band. I suspect a number of the former locals will have had to move on elsewhere as a result of the move upmarket, which always makes me uncomfortable. On the plus side, there is a beer garden (can't remember whether there was one before) but to be honest next time I'm in Crouch End I'll probably have a look at one or two of the other pubs.
grecian - 16 Apr 2007 11:13
Seems empty at times and lackes the atmosphere of The Queens and the Kings Head. There are better places to drink in crouch end
blacksd - 17 Mar 2007 03:10
This pub has undergone some major changes since its refurbishment and thankfully its for the better.

This pub is huge its great for watching the World Cup games on the Plasma screens, during Englands games they have a large projector screen they wheel out, even better!

The beer garden is really nice for sitting in during the hot summer and it even has an aviary for some strange reason.

Which brings me onto the restaurant area, at first they had a very expensive menu that wasn't drawing any people in, but now its been redone with cheaper food and lots of bar snacks.

They've also started doing Jazz music on Sunday nights, this isn't going to be to everyones taste, and I had to stop myself from asking the Jazz band to stop playing when they asked if anyone had any requests. Well I was trying to watch the football!

This place for me is the best place to drink in Crouch End at the moment, plus I saw Sean Hughes in there the other week, watching Germany vs Poland, so that seals it for me.

Now if they'd just get some rock or indie bands in it'd be sorted.

Chris1976 - 22 Jun 2006 07:56
Like the Queens this pub is also closed for refurbishment. Hopefully it will inject some life back into it.

maynard arms is a a fantastic pub.....
having family in crouch end i offten visit.
i was shocked to see just how much the pub has inproved.there is a new landlady her and the staff are a real asset to the place.it's now a clean and friendly pub
the food is good and value for money
watching football on there large screen and tottenham winning made a real good day out.
when the summer comes the beer garden will be perfect for a cool pint
alipaly2 - 18 Apr 2005 21:23
Big old place that can be a chav-tastic at times!

Well priced for both food and drinks, it's also great for watching live football.
Peter - 30 Oct 2004 13:56
Very good for watching football (they've got six or seven TVs and a giant screen), but a little intimidating if you're not an Arsenal fan. Also a couple of pool tables. Good for a local midweek pint, but not one for the weekend.
jamie - 18 Apr 2004 19:04
There was once a time I came out of the bushes outside the pub and fell on my chin. This was due to the fact that the toilets were out of order this particular evening.
Other than that experience, I have very little bad to say about this pub. In the five years, No, six years that I have been frequenting it, I have seen many changes. There was a time when it was the social centre for people from my old school; now it seems such lively days have gone, but it remains dear to my heart.
Overall, it is a friendly family-oriented pub with decent prices and pleasant staff. The food ain't bad either.
Dickie - 7 Jan 2004 17:38
They have a reasonable selection
of beers, including Abbot Ale and
Greene King IPA, but they're not
particularly well kept. Better than
most, but not great.

Food is good value, especially
the lunchtime steak-and-chips
and-a-pint deal on Monday and
Tuesday (5.50) and the chicken
nachos.

I haven't been for a couple of months. One of the few child-friendly pubs in the area (in the beer-garden only) - good if you like kids (which I don't!).
Also good for watching football on TV - especially Arsenal matches.

Enormous local style pub. Pool, darts, and table footy, and the biggest beer garden in Crouch End. Perfect for a summer's afternoon.
