user reviews of the Star, Ruthin

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

As I entered the Star, a full choir and orchestra burst into the tutti of Zadok The Priest. Six beautiful Amazons appeared, and carried me shoulder high to a diamond-studded barstool, and the landlady placed a pint of such clarity before me, that it split a shaft of sunlight, prism-like, and rainbows danced around the room.

As I drank, the ceiling and roof seemed to become transparent, and I found that I could see to the very limits of the known universe, right back to the blinding moment of Creation itself.

The beer was a touch on the chilly side however, so three-out-of-ten, I'm afraid.

Scrump, bright and jgog all posted about this pub - without having visited it. One of the reasons this indifferent site is, what it is. Why not just visit a pub, and say what you thought of it?

Can you read side side, or only just insult - unlike me!?
croydonpeer - 25 Dec 2019 08:36
So then Croydonpeer, have you been in the Star in Ruthin? If you haven't your complaint at Gog is hypocritical. And I think the point of Scrumpy's original post on this pub was to be cautious of erratic open hours - which is useful information. To have a pop at Scrumpy who is one of the few good posters on this site is just silly.

I know its the season of goodwill to all people but I do wish that nobs like Peer, Traderdick and his/her various other aliases would shut up and stick to what this (nowadays) sad BITE site is supposed to be about. That, or, as the Princess Royal almost said many years ago, just efff orfff.

What a shame that BITE doesn't have a moderator anymore.

Significantly you post (again) about a pub you were never in. Unlike me and the other poster vic, and srump - who also sadly commented (initially) on this reasonable establishment, when he hadn't visited it either!
croydonpeer - 24 Dec 2019 16:26
the word ‘apparently’ signified it was hearsay. It may be false, probably true. Either way Mr Scrumpy was generous enough to give the place another chance. It sounds like a dire pub!

Fine. They whined about a closed pub, denigrated the landlord (on hearsay evidence) and quoted a derogatory post from another site.

Then say - it's the worst pub visited. Not one positive comment, even vaguely. In fact, this is an ideal pub - for the younger 2020s.

They didn’t ‘return to a pub they disliked’, they visited a pub that had previously been closed when they tried to visit it. maybe read the review before going into police mode.

Why return to a pub you dislike - and then tell us about it, twice?
tradervic - 22 Dec 2019 18:31
I returned to Denbighshire last night to give this pub and the Red Lion Hotel in Cyffyliog another try. They were both open this time. Unlike the Red Lion, the Star was certainly not worth returning for. Real ale has long since disappeared from here. The offering was Guinness, Carling, John Smith's, Carlsberg, San Miguel, Shipyard or Thatcher's Gold. A disco was being set up. Local youths were sat at the bar. This may be the oldest pub in Ruthin. But, it's also the worst of the ones I've visited.

There was no sign of life at this pub on Sunday lunchtime. There was a board outside advertising a Halloween party and a notice on the door stating to deliver any post to the rear. I asked in one of the other town pubs what the opening hours. But, apparently it depends if the owner has been out the previous night or not. I returned later in the evening to find it still closed. No chance of a beer in the evening here and judging by the reviews on Trip Advisor, if you book a room here, you'll have little chance of ever getting that either.
