As the previous interlocutor asserts, important as a place where live music can thrive. Nor is it a bad pub for watching the football (others in the town should take note given the class snobbery behind their rugby fixation). Posters commemorating The Who and Hendrix are another nice touch but the looks were grim and the clientele overwhelmingly masculine.

Possibly the most important pub in Berkhamsted, but not the best pub. There are scores of mostly mediocre places to eat, drink and shop and even a twee cinema, but this is the only place to see live music and long may it continue.

A local source of noise and disturbance, not known for its finesse or classy clientele. Mostly a sports bar with big-screen sports and live bands, at closing time its punters spill out onto the street and a quiet town street is transformed into a scene from Hades with bellowing males and screaming laddettes staggering to the kebab shop, while taxis queue up to ferry the incapable back to Hemel.

I would really like this pub to be considered a decent boozer but it really struggles to be one thing or another. If it wants to be a music venue then so be it, but its struggling to be a pub anymore.

Visited yesterday (Saturday) in late afternoon. Good mix of crowd (old n young). Nice pint of side pocket - pricey though so when the musical surcharge kicks in it becomes 3.60 a pint!

I have been to The Goat a handful of times to watch the footie (which is primarily what this pub seems to be about) and have always found it to be a pub with a good atmosphere and never any trouble.

I had some family down from London and we were at a loose end on a sat night and suggested to go see a band at The Goat. It was early and we managed to find a table and went to get a round of drinks. We sat watching the band set up and then went to the bar to get another round of drinks to find the price had shot up. I inquired about this to be told that bar prices were increased when the band were playing. I asked when people were notified and I was pointed to a small notice above the bar, not noticeable in the dim light. I paid for our drinks (reluctantly), went back to the table and half an hour after I sat back down, our half full drinks started to disappear. Im not sure if this is coincidence but I did wonder if this was a way to 'encourage' people to visit the bar more often.

I dont know of anywhere else that operates this policy of raising bar prices when the band is playing, could someone enlighten me please? And I also was not the only person that evening who had half full drinks removed.

If you like sweaty, packed bars with overpriced drinks, long waiting times at the bar and over enthusiastic glass collectors, please visit. If you dont, there are other establishments I could highly recommend. I wont be visiting again.

Always seems to be busy at weekends, where they have loud music playing and bouncers on the door when I've walked past. I've only ever been in on a Saturday afternoon to watch footy on their TV's (of which there are many); the pub is perfect in this regard and the barman was very accomodating for us putting on a second rate game we wanted to watch on one of the TV's when there was a bigger European game on anotehr channel. However, there isn't much to get excited about beer wise.

Looks to be aimed primarily at the younger market but is welcoming to all. There is a dedicated stage area and they have regular live music. Had a decent pint of Old Speckled Hen on a quiet Friday afternoon.
