user reviews of the Edmund Halley, Lee

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

October 2015.
Beer was great, but that is it.
Clients in and out of the doors, all on their phones, some quite rough for this end of Lee.
This used to be the nearest Spoons to me and I used to avoid it like the plague, but it has got a lot better, prices and other pub closures nearbye now bringing in more middle class patrons.
Typical Shop conversion that does not pretent to be anything else.
I'd visit again if in the area.

My first visit to this rough 'spoons for a couple of years. It's a Tuesday tea time and on this visit it's not quite so rough as the last time I was here which was a Saturday afternoon in June 2012!

5.30pm and the pub is more than half full with everyone clearly a local. 3 staff on and all of look as rough as the customers!

7 ales across the 8 hand pumps. My pint of Brewsters Aromantica was alright, poured okay but it didn’t taste like it was kept that well.

I think out of all the ‘spoons I’ve ever been in this one is right up there with one of the worse. The pub looks fine, okay it’s a bit tired but it’s alright…it’s the punters that make the pub so rough.

I won’t be rushing back!

A typical shopping centre / town centre spoons, built into the Leegate centre at the side on the main road.

3 beers on draught when I visited and even though the pint I had was fine the place is a sh*thole and the clientele are not much better.

Really nothing more to say.
lezford - 23 Jun 2012 18:16
Not too bad in the week but I'd avoid Friday and Saturday night due to the clientel loitering around outside when the sun is out. Cheap booze and the staff are ok (can be a bit miserable). The toilets are about half a mile away so be prepared.
One of the slightly better Weatherspoons.
Mattyh34 - 13 Jun 2012 09:43
Avoid like the common plague poor service poor everything always out of products and shines a bad light on the JDW brand rather go lewisham spoons or Greenwich
LONDONASBO - 4 Apr 2011 21:47
Some of the negatives are fair points...however the beer is usually pretty good and you won't beat the prices...It's better then anything up Blackheath which has really gone down the pan in the last year or so.
MSE12 - 3 Jun 2010 16:35
This is a below average Spoons and as there are far better pubs around the only possible reason that I can fathom why anyone would drink in here is to get loaded on the cheap booze.

Ill not be returning.
Strongers - 28 Oct 2009 10:43
I've been in many pubs where it's a struggle to get to the bar. Normally it's because of the crowds. In this put it's because you get stuck to the carpet two paces in. Give it a miss, and by the way, the toilets really SHOULD be in the same postcode as the rest of the pub.
sonoftherock - 9 Jul 2009 09:36
Unfortunatly fairly typical of a lot of London 'Spoons, if dirtier than most. Staff ignore the evening closing times and always try to get you out earlier.
The stand out feature of this pub is how the cretin of an architect has managed to make the trek to the toilets at least twice the length of the pub: my god, Scott of the Antactic would have given up half way and pi**ed on the filthy carpet!

flashharry1965 - 18 Jun 2009 11:40
Wetherspoons in Lewisham far better, I am a new local and have tried three times, each time the place smelt of sick and was dirty. Avoid
Germansmustdie - 27 Jan 2009 01:24
I've posted about this pub before. I agree with abcdef. This is a Wetherspoons. You know roughly what it's going to be like. If your criterion for judging a pub is how far the bog is from your seat you should probably stay home.
Glasgowboy - 18 Apr 2008 13:19
I can only think I live in some bizarre parallel universe to everyone that hates this pub so much.

I've been going there for years because it has good beer, good food, and a friendly atmosphere.

Some of the previous reviewers are scraping the barrel a bit. One complains that he has to go upstairs to pee; another that the barman looks like a foreigner; a third that the beer is cheap.

If it's so crap, why is it thronged with people every time I visit?
abcdefgh - 2 Mar 2008 10:30
This is our local . They serve good food and a wide selection of lager, beer and spirits and also cocktails ..Nice atmosphere.Good crowd of people, both regulars and new faces.
jelboy - 28 Feb 2008 21:33
Have to agree with the other comments - one to avoid. Really dirty and horrible. Doesn't feel like a proper pub at all.
old_at_heart - 28 Feb 2008 16:55
Crap
The only reason it gets a 2 is because it is open all through the week until 12 and 1am on a friday and saturday.
pub seems dirty the toilets are up in the gods, most people try and use the disabled one downstairs.
Bar staff are very rude to some punters mind u with the opening hours they just wanna go home.
Watch for the silent bell trick etc
just run down and dirty
even got scaffolding in the pub to hold part of the roof up. Forget it !!!!!!!
anonymous - 8 Oct 2007 00:02
I must have visisted on a good day, as I got served quickly, by a British barman, so had no complains about the staff. 8 real ales on offer, and the pint I had was kept very well, and tasted lovely. I would visit again if I ws in the area.
McDrunk - 16 Jun 2007 11:25
The worst Wetherspoons ever. The customer care can be summed up by the fact the toilets are up loads of stairs and along a corridor. Possibly the furthest I've ever had to climb for a pee. Too small, poor beer, poor service, dirty, the list is endless. Cheap - but then again so is staying at home.
TheBlackStuff - 22 Apr 2007 15:46
Appalling pub. The reason people tend to drink at home are down to boozers like this.
I went there with my wife, and we had to wait while local soaks got served before us, even though we were waiting first! The staff have tended to be different on each of the occasions I have been in there.
The toilets are up a seemingly endless set of stairs, and I would not fancy that trek after a heavy session!.
Lee needed a decent boozer, but this pub is a great excuse to stop drinking altogether.
drunkasusual - 19 Feb 2007 18:34
Walked past on Sunday (21/01) Needed a laugh and decided to poke my head through the door. It was a bit cleaner than last time. Then again it couldn't have become any worse. Sadly out of the 3 beers I tried, all were off. The Dick Turpin was more like Dick Turpentine. To be fair the barman did offer a sample first. My own stupidity for turning it down. The Thin Ice was also off, as was the Rosey Nosey. Its gone from a 0/10 to a 3/10, that that's only for the friendly barman, who happily exchanged the bad beers. In the end I had a tolerable Adnams. Still to be avoided like the plague, but I hope the chap behind the bar ends up in a decent pub.
Zaphod - 22 Jan 2007 09:53
what a craphole
my god
its just dirty and run down
just like the location
only one bloke serving when I visited
toilets in the gods

bloke who served it looked from eastern europe
pint looked like a 99 all I needed was a flake
took ages for me mate to get served
even then the barman was going to serve someone else
leave well alone
cheap yes

anonymous - 29 Nov 2006 12:37
By far the worst wetherspoon pub i have been to,i totally agree with all the other reviews.
tobyjug7 - 21 Oct 2006 21:50
The worst Wetherspoons I've ever been to, and yes, I've been to the one in Leceister Square. Came here specifically for their Curry Festival once, only to be told they hadn't started it yet, despite the fact you couldn't look anywhere in the pub without being confronted by a massive poster confirming the start date in 20 point type. Came here another time for breakfast, only to be told I can't order it yet, because "she (I presume the manager, acting as chef) is upstairs in the office". This was at 11:30am. If I can't order breakfast at 11:30am, when exactly do they suggest I have it. 12pm? Surely that would make it lunch. No apologies for either, just a straight a matter of fact - no food. Last week, we were served by an Eastern European who gave us the wrong drinks, then tried to double charge us for the drinks, then brought us the wrong food. At least he got our table number right; well done.

On Friday and Saturday night, the bar is rammed with chavs, pre-binging before going to the dreadful Old Tiger's Head across the street, which stops allowing entry at 10:30. (Obviously the 2.30 or so the Old Tiger's Head charges is too steep, and must be avoided as long as possible). As a result, the bar is inevitably sticky with Aftershock and Red Bull spillage, and crowded with people shouting at each other from distances of up to 1 foot apart. I usually only talk that loudly to people if they're foreign.

Any positives? Well......the quiz machine is easy to win on, because it gets plowed with coins from people who presumably left school at 14 to pursue their lives as benefit claimants or single parents.

Unfortunately, it's the only pub in Lee Green to do food.......occasionally.......when they feel like it.

topdog_andy - 19 Oct 2006 11:43
Not nearly as bad as the reviews suggest. What do people expect? It's a Wetherspoons. In Lee Green. Not Hoxton. It's cheap and cheerful if a little smoky.
Glasgowboy - 18 Oct 2006 12:36
I visited thispub once. First pint was sour, the second nearly passed its sell-by-date. Drank up quickly and left. Would never go back. Definitely at the bottom of the JDW pile.
wyndham - 22 Sep 2006 15:34
Quite possibly the worst example of a 'Spoons pub to be found inside the M25, possibly the UK.

Doubles up as a smoking roomcanteen for the losers from JS Lee Green (JS Lewisham, was always the far superior store) across the road.

If you like, dirty tables, staff that won't even acknowledge you, beer that tramps would turn their noses up at and no real atmosphere, then you'll like drinking here. If not head to the Tigers Head (both) for a better time.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 13 Sep 2006 17:14
Visited this place on Sunday night for the first time in about 18 months. Service was dire and had to chase up the barmaid (manager ?)to get my change. Top up!!! Forget it. Drank my 90% filled pint and left. May venture in again in 18 months time, assuming the wrecking ball has'nt been employed.
M.Sticker - 3 Jan 2006 17:29
What a complete disgrace. Wetherspoon's should just board it up and take a wrecking ball to it. (with staff still inside) Basically its a smoking room for all the Sainsbury staff and other workers nearby. Never attempted the food, both ales I tried were beyond rancid. The miserable staff served familiar faces first, regardless of how long others had been waiting. The list goes on. Perhaps this pub is the 'rug' that Wetherspoon's sweeps all their staff dregs under.
Zaphod - 10 Nov 2005 15:12
I go to this pub at least twice a week. It has gone downhill since it opened about seven years ago. The tables are not cleared and cleaned enough. The Wetherspoons food menu was stripped down to a third of its original choice before Easter 2005, however the out-of-date menu still appears in the glass display by the door (told me they are waiting for a new one a month ago). The bar staff are unfriendly and intimidating with tattoos and piercings. The punters are loud and oiky because the booze is cheap. The one or two real ales on tap are often "unavailable". 80 per cent of the drinkers smoke, so when the smoking ban takes effect in 2006 the pub will be struggling unless they replace their customer base. The only place to park a car is opposite in Sainsbury's underground car park. They have just applied for an extension to 12.30am Monday to Thursday and 1am Friday and Saturday nights. This will help but it is grotty for a new pub.

Pennington - 11 Jun 2005 01:10
I worked here a few years ago and i popped back for a pint last week. Although i can see most arguements with regards to service from both sides of the fence. In this case however, i have to side with the old regulars i spoke to, it is in a bad way. the place doesn't take enough cash and therefore Wetherspoons will not allow more staff hours. It needs a very experienced team of good managers if it is going to survive.

ps; when it becomes non-smoking, i really cannot see who is going to go there.
2pinttommy - 18 May 2005 22:37
The only thing this pub has got going for it,is it is bloody cheap.
Aj73 - 10 Jan 2004 12:52
BIKECLUB :every friday night /all the local road racers come down even some as far as from north london and kent,we'always at the bar with gozzo ,steve ,russell ,my dad and skin . the spitfires cheep ,goes down well with lads although they say it gives em the shits if you have to many.
Rob cook - 6 Dec 2003 20:23
I waited for ten minutes to be served in there yesterday...it doesn't sound that bad, but on Wednesday evening with two bar staff and only three people needing serving, I'd say it was terrible. I won't be going back!
Kirsty - 29 May 2003 19:24
The service at this place appears to have got a bit better. The tables get cleaned slightly more regularly now too, although the place is still generally dirty. Don't suppose they can do much about the expedition to the toilets though.
mike - 29 Apr 2003 15:27
If you enjoy sitting at a table that hasn't been wiped down for a week, drinking cheap beer out of a dirty glass, and having to do marathon training to get to the loo, you'll love this pub.
Andy - 17 Aug 2002 12:21
There were 20 people waiting to be served at the bar by one bar person. When the deputy manager arrived and began putting change in the tills I suggested he would be better employed serving customers. Result: I was barred. A so-called "full investigation" by head office (via Tim Martin) resulted in a letter saying the licensee does not want me in the place! Another long time customer has recently been barred for complaining that his glass was dirty! This pub has the worst service and staff of any pub I have ever visited in the past 55 years. I now use the Old Tiger's Head which has a very pleasant beer garden.
Ray - 16 Aug 2002 18:45
It's the best pub in Lee Green, which isn't saying much to be honest.

Beware - this isn't a pub to go to for a quick pint, cos the service is generally crap.
mike - 9 Aug 2002 13:22
