please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice pub. Brews its own beers, but on my visit they were not very good. I've had one of the same beers at a beer festival, and it was OK. Perhaps it was dirty pipes, or just an off-day in the brewery. But there was a distinct feel of poor quality home brew about the beers.

First visit here when I've been sober enough to remember it! This is another pub that is close to Norwich's football ground and it is also very convenient for the station. As the brewery tap for the Chalk Hill Brewery, they had the Best, Gold, Dreadnought, Flintknappers & Old Tackle. Live football was being shown on the TVs. A noisy place that presumably is popular for food on non-matchdays.

My first Norwich pub since the Fat Cat in 2003. Fairly busy on Tuesday night but the Norwich v Forest youth cup tie had something to do with that. 6 brewery beers on handpump - advertised on a chalkboard, but there were so many chalkboards (foody stuff) I missed it - came back 2 more times so had all their beers. The brewery tap beer was £2.40, also tried CHB and Gold - better on a warm Summers day as they were not strong tasting. In total contrast was the Flintknappers, Dreadnought and Old Tackle which were more chewy. They close at midnight (Friday night?) which saved my bacon when I though my drinking was all over.

Good pub. Large establishment and not cheap, but good range of ales, friendly helpful staff, decent pub food, easy walk to the football ground and station. Does get very busy on match days. Sky sports and a roaring open fire.

This is a very, very popular pub which gets exceedingly noisy. Packed with red faced, middle aged 'shouties' who cannot/will not hold a sensible conversation without shouting at each other. Definitely not the place to go for a quiet drink. The beer however is pretty damned good although the session beer is too weak and wishywashy for my taste. I really enjoyed the Dreadnought and the strongest one were excellent. Friendly staff and decent reasonably priced food too. But for a quiet pint, I had to sit outside with the nicotine addicts.

Decent micro brewery / pub with decent beer and best of all you always get served nicely here with a smile and like they actually care (Fat Cat could note this based on my more recent visits). Dreadnought and Flintknappers ales stand out but none should disapoint , decent wifi if you need it and good pub grub too. Open to midnight midweek which is handy if you want to have a few rather than join the Prince of Wales road mayhem.

A great pub with a mixed crowd and friendly staff who'll let you try a beer before buying it.

Attached to the Chalk Hill Brewery, they have a selection of real ales brewed on the premises that are highly recommended. Well worth a visit.

Everything that a brewpub should be, and the Flintknappers Mild continues to be superb. Is VERY busy when the Canaries play at home though!
Hodge1 - 8 Apr 2011 11:46
Visted this pub at the weekend. Very busy but superb atmosphere. Great Ales all brewed on the premises. The food looked and smelt great !!

This pub is defo worth a visit, lovely big tables outside for the summer time !! sampled three of the local ales, the CHB was really nice, so would recommend that as a starter !!

If I could own a pub I would want one like this place !!

Friendly welcome and tasty Chalk Hill Brewery ales at reasonable prices. Handy for Thorpe Station.

My review should be tempered by the fact that the place was absolutely mobbed when I visited: Norwich were about to get booted out of the FA Cup by the mighty Os that afternoon. But what I did glean was this: the service was cheery and swift, in spite of the layers of bodies pressed up against the bar - the beer (much of it their own) was top quality, particularly the Flintknappers Mild - the atmosphere was very convivial, in spite of the competing groups of fans - and they had big screen football on.

I'm told that Fat Cat is the real real ale mecca in Norwich, but this place certainly won't disappoint if you're in town for the football, and it is much easier to get to.

great spit n sawdust style pub full of the mighty green n yellows!! crackin beer from pubs own brewery n sky sports. top banana!!
hopsgreennyellow - 12 Nov 2010 15:09
I had high hopes for this place but to be honest found the quality of the beers on offer to be a complete let down - not a patch on the nearby Jubilee or Ketts

nice pub but gets packed on ncfc home days, good quick staff
great food..the chalk brewery is a bit heavy for me but..8/10

Nipped in for a quick pint yesterday lunchtime, Flintknappers Mild 2.60 pint was in tip top condition. Just as good as ever, bare boards, good beer, good food and a nice selection of papers to read. Best pub this side of Norwich by far. Pretty smiley barmaids to!
Hodge1 - 24 Sep 2010 06:12
If you're in Norwich bashing the 47s on the Yarmouth drags this is the pub for your lunch break. Less than 10 minutes from the station and a good choice of ale and food.
nidger50 - 16 Aug 2010 22:44
Decent pub, Chalk Hill Brewery beers (did I just have an under par pint or is CHB not as good as it used to be?), very busy when Norwich are at home.
aleloz - 9 Aug 2010 15:32
This pub was booked for the visit of the Carlisle United London Branch Supporters club and the last game of the season. The place was heaving but the beer is excellent, well presented and served and the staff were excellent in getting the masses quickly served. Very handy for the ground and afterwards and between here and the Jubilee they must be making a small fortune in the football trade. Don't know what it's like in the week but I'll be returning - the locals bought me two free pints as we talked and jibbered on pre match. Oh yes Carlisle won 0-2 to the Norwich League Champions - both goals inside the first 10 mins. With it's micro-brewery status then a CAMRA gold mine I would suggest. I'll be back, blue army, blue army...:)

In here after Saints win at Norwich. 7 different Chalk Hill beers, we had the CHB and the Flintknappers Mild which were both pretty decent. 2.20 - 2.80 for the standard beers and you can get 4 pint jugs to make it even cheaper. Bare looking pub, would be interesting to visit without the large football crowd. Worth a visit.
GuideDogSaint - 21 Feb 2010 16:44
Home of the Chalk Hill Brewery, this a large Pub about 15 minutes walk from the City Centre. The beers are well kept and good value for money as is the food. Well worth a visit
ahscum - 13 Feb 2010 17:21
Good food, if a little pricey. All wood interior, can be a bit dark at times, especially in the front. Beers are all Chalk Hill, don't remember ever seeing a guest. The Flintknappers mild is great, others OK.
naardge - 14 Sep 2009 20:45
Very good pub with Chalkhills excellent beers. Have eaten in there a while back and the food was good also. Worth a visit.
trekman - 17 Aug 2009 19:13
Great pub... home to the Chalk Hill Brewery so has a full range of their beers and also some guests. Good food too. Only a short walk from Norwich station and a great place to waste an hour or so when waiting for a train.
Rod_Hariga - 14 Jun 2009 13:44
Ever since this pub opened and became the Chalk Hill Brewery its been consistantly good. The ales are tasty and reasonably priced, the staff seemed enthusiastic and helpful, especially when a Norfolk constabulary policeman walked in asking for directions to......the police station! Its a traditional bare boards and chunky wooden furnature type place, well in keeping with its brewery tap image. 5 mins walk from the station, and SO different to the Rosary tavern.
Hodge1 - 16 May 2009 08:14
Largish pub on Thorpe Road close to the railway station - approx 300 yards or so.

It's set back from the road - see photo - so there's a relatively large outside seating area in front of the pub.

Inside is a large main bar with bare boards and an open fire place.

My Friday night visit found the pub, perhaps inevitably, pretty busy, but with seemingly quite a trendy urban professional crowd, rather than the usual Friday night Budweiser boneheads. The fact that its situated the other side of the station from the City Centre obviously helps in this regard - its all about location, location !

The Coach and Horses is the home of Chalk Hill Brewery and the CHB Bitter was a fine tasty pint.

Food seemed popular, if not cheap.

Worth popping in for one when in Norwich

Finished off our Norwich crawl here , excellent place to do so. Filled up rapidly as the match had just finished. As others have said start or finish your day here for sure.

Buzzing place with brilliant beers

Visited this pub over the weekend on a football tour. Great range of beers brewed on site at their own Chalk Hill brewery. My favourite was the Gold @ 4.3 %. Very drinkable on a warm summers afternoon.
tangerineman - 11 May 2008 20:17
Like others have already commented an excellent pub close to the train station. This is the brewery tap for Chalk Hill. I have visited this pub many times and a visit to Norwich would not be complete if this is not included. I reviewed this pub last year but stupidly included the web site and it was removed. No flash pump clips here, Chalk Hill beers do not need any help to sell their beer. Only time for one pint here last night and went for the excellent Flintknapper's mild again.

The Coach and Horses does not have a pool table, juke box or fruit machines. It does however have a TV for the football and is not on all the time. I have sampled their food on previous visits and there is a blackboard to your right as you arrive. On it all the daily special dishes are listed. Quite a number will be sold out if you arrive later in the day. The pub believes in serving you the full pint and always in out size lined glasses.
Love_good_ale - 17 Apr 2008 23:31
Had some spare minutes waiting at the station so took a quick walk up Thorpe Road to this interesting brew-pub. Had a nice pint of their Flintknapper's mild (quite strong at 5%) before dashing back to catch my train. Glad I made the effort - it finished off my visit to Norwich very nicely.
rpadam - 27 Feb 2008 23:09
A large room with massive bar area, and lots of handpumps dispensing their own Chalk Hill beers and guests. Comfy seating. Enjoyed the beer, particularly a new one for me, the Chalk Hill Gold. Always on my itinary when I visit Norwich.

Fantastic pub... very close to the station. Hadn't visited for a few years but ate (and drank) there one evening last week. Good, reasonably priced, food and great beer. Six beers on offer as I recall - all from the on-site Chalk Hill Brewery. They were very good, well kept and distinctly different from each other. Well worth a visit and handy if you've got a wait for your next train.
Rod_Hariga - 22 Oct 2007 20:38
Visited on the 11th of April and find it by chance cycling back to the train station. What a find! What lovely beer and the stout was particularly memorable. The staff were so nice and helpful.Wish I could have stayed longer but a train back to London was waiting but next time I'm in Norwich I will be back.
Miles007 - 20 Apr 2007 16:31
Really nice pub with an adjoining brewery (Chalk Hill). They had I think 5 Chalk Hill beers on tap - the CHB was very tasty. The pub was deservedly popular, with a good crowd around the outside tables on a warm evening. And I love the signs - Drinking Consultants!!
Sandalf - 24 Sep 2006 23:35
Just a short walk from both rail station and football ground. I don't expect you'll prise Delia Smith away from the Directors' lounge to come here but I expect it's popular with beer loving footy fans. If you're looking for the sort of variety found in a number of centre pubs, you'll be disappointed but there is a choice of Chalk Hill beers brewed on the premises to compensate and reasonably priced too. Plenty of space at the front for alfresco drinking.
Alerover - 12 Aug 2006 16:05
Site of another heated exchange between gentle giant Phillips and lifelong Spurs fan Greaves, this is a choice drinking hole offering a range of tasty in-house ales and unremarkable food in a smoke filled environment. Recommended for the welcome sight of Canaries fans drowning their sorrows. Also good for rugby if you don't mind hearing girlfriends twittering on about something they do not understand.

All I want after a fitful connection journey or a long haul slog is a nice decent pint in an environment that has a smidgen of character, a trace of a tap choice and the slightest hint of a good atmosphere. I mean I`m not asking for a pair of Pamela Andersons panties with every 5 purchase - I just want a pleasant unwinding experience. Instead, like everyone else who uses the railways regularly, I`m more often that not treated to indoor or close by railway station pubs that are bland, small, usually grotty, overpriced and sport a drink selection so minute you have to squint to be able to see it. Maybe its just me, but I can almost feel these kind of places laughing from behind their money pots, safe in the knowledge that tossers like me cant be arsed to walk any further for a decent drink.

Its therefore a joy when even a slightly above average pub breaks the mould, which the Coach & Horse certainly does. This might be because it doesnt have to rely on commuter cash solely, as its location along what is essentially a backroad away from the station means that it has a steady local clientele that probably encourages its wide drink selection and classic old boozer feel. The prices too are relatively reasonable, the staff always friendly and its slight pitch away from the city means that it is never too crowded though neither is it ever dead.

It does have its flaws the food selection is pretty restricted, strangely overpriced and to be perfectly honest only marginally edible. And while the atmosphere and dcor is fairly good, there isnt anything thats going to grab you by the jaffers and make you think wow, this is brilliant.

Still its good enough for a 7/10, and if you are in Norwich with a few hours to waste before your next stop off, this is a pretty good option.

This is the brewery tap for the Chalk Hill Brewery (visable at the back of the pub) they had four of their beers on when i visited, very friendly largish pub with decent food
lovesong - 23 May 2005 16:08
Went here the day before a game - so it was not as busy as match days. Food was good and the Beers were excellent - Tap is a very drinkable session ale!
Martin_R - 19 May 2005 17:06
Made us very welcome. Difficult to get served on Match days though as the coach park is just across the way.
John - 25 Oct 2004 23:42
Beers brewed here so they are fine. Food limited but OK for ballast for the beer. Blackboard in the Gents if you feel the need for graffiti.
Gerard - 26 Sep 2004 18:35

This pub has some great real ales as the Chalk Hill Micro Brewery is out the back. Food is great, cooked from fresh. It is cosy and welcoming.
