Always good to see real ale next to a Premier Inn and in a family pub; unfortunately beer was poor despite apparent CAMRA-friendly signs.

Best pub in Rainhill for real ale; they do try very hard to update and vary the selection. And its always very well kept. Well done ! Only gripe is the food for Xmas season parties. A group of friends and myself booked a table at the beginning of December 2010 for our annual Xmas get-together meal; unfortunately, this turned out to be a mistake. Apparently, we should have informed them that some of us would quite like an Xmas dinner (there's a surprise, it was December after all and Xmas meals were listed on the menu that night !). Imagine, I ended up having sausage and mash since it was evidently too much trouble to serve any of us with turkey et.c. ! A great shame. So, in summary: excellent for real ale, excellent for a quiet night out, very very disappointing for food (or rather lack of !).

Went here on the day after boxing day. This is a nice pub, not too busy and probably a good place to watch sport. The beer is also well kept - but there is a sting in the tail. The real ale on offer is mainly the modern yellow stuff (such as Ship to Shore) which that CAMRA lot seem to like.
On my visit they had some nice (brown) Hawkshead Christmas ale but it ran out after one pint and the three others on offer were all yellow beers.
So my tip is that if you're not fussed about the type of ale you drink then the Ship is a good place to go, but if you like drinking traditional bitter then you may be disappointed. Should also warn that the beer is also a bit pricey for Rainhill.

In terms of beer selection, this was the best of a dozen pubs I visited in Merseyside last Sunday. George Wright Ship to Shore, Prospect Nutty Slack, Coach House Dick Turpin and Liverpool One Mersey Mist were all available on handpull. Service from the circular bar was friendly and the carvery smelt very nice in the room to the side. Seating is right round the bar. I'm sure I saw a sign that stated that this was also a hotel and it certainly has the feel of a hotel bar. But nevertheless, it appears to be popular with the local St Helens CAMRA group and I quite enjoyed my brief stay here.

This pub continues to improve. Now 4 good quality cask ales on all the time from local breweries. Only let down by being slightly expensive

A pleasant pub/restaurant, next door to a Premier Inn and opposite Loyola Hall.
Two well kept cask ales available and good quality pub food at not too expensive prices.

Fairly quiet pub/resturant. Quite expensive but seves good George Wright beer.
