We went into to watch the golf, but there was noone at the bar.

The 2 barstaff were sitting in a booth chatting and eventually a lanky young guy in a plaid shirt wandered over and begrudging served us and went back to the booth.

The blonde barmaid he was with served a guy who was standing at the bar and then she went back to the booth. The bar was empty, so they probably thought they could get away with it, but this is terribly inhospitable and we won't be returning. And the food is terrible.

It's just had a major re-fit but is still a town centre venue bar although they do now have 2 real ales(?!) - both from Wells Brewery of Bedford. Bombardier and Yates Bitter which we reckon are both the same beer!! Quite smart inside but definitely one for the "younger set"

Yates' is a must stop off as the first bar on a night out. On a fri and sat night is always busy from 9ish onward, Mostly full of pretty women (With the odd scragger thrown in but u can't have everything). Outside has a large beer garden with a upstairs balcony which is occasionally open in summer. Outside has a cool and handy bar which is great if you want to spend your evening enjoying the weather. Wicked bloke in male toilet selling sprays of aftershave for a quid(' No Armani no poonani, No spray no lay' etc). Manager is a arrogant prick tho, Often seen compensating for a tiny dinkle by shouting and swearing at his staff in full view of punters, While standing there with his thumb in his waistcoat pocket. What a chief. Other than that tool Yates' is a staple on most revellers nights out.

Would not seek it out and would need to think 3 times before deciding to eat here.

Husband and older daughter watched the football here Sunday whilst myself and 14 year old shopped. Met them there afterwards. Sat in the upstairs area, wine fridge broken so kept being told that the glass of wine would be brought to the table but barman more interested in talking on his phone so forgot and had to be reminded 15 minutes later. All ok until 6pm when everyone thrown out of the upstairs area by a beefy bouncer and we were told in a not altogether tactful way that we weren't welcome downstairs with our teenager so had to get out, Charming!

A decent pub.

Good location, easy walk from the Oracle, for a sneaky weekend pint just after you've been shopping and the shops are closing. The staff are generally ok, if not a bit slow at times'. I love the 3D football and it does seem to be thoroughly decent to me.
Aquastar - 11 Apr 2010 20:30
Depressing staff and this place really reminds me of a morgue which is starting to turn to dust.
JohnOcean - 23 Dec 2009 13:54
Its a Yates- ie rubbish
beefbeerandbaps - 10 Nov 2009 15:48
Popped in again the other day and found their two ales (Pride and a specially-brewed 'birthday ale') were in decent condition.

It's a Yates' of course, so whether you choose to venture in after 8pm on a Friday or Saturday night is entirely up to you...it's on Friar St, which is the late-night binge drinking street in town. it wouldn't be my choice.
Quinno - 13 Jul 2009 21:07
Here's a piece of useless information about Yatess' - a pub which many people don't seem to rate very highly. They had a special beer brewed for them to celebrate their 125th Birthday - this was a cask bitter called (yes you've guessed) Birthday Ale and it was sold for (correct again) 1.25 a pint . As the celebrations were due to finish at the end of June then you only have a few days left to sample this brew,so hurry on down there right now.

Most miserable staff in the World. agree with beersupper.
BestBeerBoffin - 18 Apr 2009 15:00
I have a suggestion for a new name for this place "Toxic Sausage" any others ??
Beersupper - 27 Aug 2008 20:12
I would rather raid a waste bin in the street for food than eat here -50/10
Beersupper - 21 Aug 2008 21:21
I was in here for a couple on Saturday afternoon and found the bar to be pleasant enough. I wouldnt go out of my way to drink here, but then I dont know anyone that would go out of their way to drink in a Yatess.

The quiz machine was broken, but the barmaid was very friendly and the bouncer let us all in, unlike ONeills a few doors down.

Im still not sure why the shiny metal toilet bowls had no seats.
Strongers - 1 Apr 2008 15:12
Now sells London Pride, so I ventured in. Pint was OK actually.

Usually deserted during the week, heaving at weekends, but then again so are all the townie chain bars.

Disabled-friendly, even when busy, my friend was given (ViP treatment by the bouncers) so a bonus point there.
Quinno - 19 Feb 2008 19:55
We agree with Baz. And the service was better.
pubinspectors - 12 Sep 2007 11:38
I liked it when it was a post office.

Redone recently and they gave me a free drink so I have nothing but praise for this establishment.

Once saw a geordie order a huge round (40 between four) before bouncing around the stage singing 'crazy little thing called love' by Queen at karaoke - priceless
ted_savage - 17 Jul 2007 15:11
Considering other Yates, this is quite good. The food was to a good enough standard though one item wasnt what was ordered, staff a bit on the grim side, but perhaps working here isnt much fun. Can drink John Smiths for ale
aleman - 4 Apr 2007 17:40
Oh yes this is chavesville alright a proper dump. It was good when it first opened but i was 18 at the time. If you fancy a night out with some right idiots then go there.
Riggers - 2 Apr 2007 15:05
Mind numbingly awful, caters to the lowest common denominator in Reading, Chavs a plenty, all alco pops and the usual strange drinks they think people will want, I mean what was that blob stuff they were selling a while back. Staff have personal hygiene issues.
Nero - 14 Mar 2007 13:33
Really bad attitude from all the bar staff. Also they only seem to ever have one staff on around 5 to 7 on week days which dosent make sense as a lot of people pop in for an after work drink. I have used this place on and off for a few years now and the place nerver changes. Also when i used to go there at the weekends there were always under age girls and boys drinking alco pops!
palinlover - 6 Mar 2007 15:02
Nice Looking Spacious Building.Reasonable price drinks and comfy. 9/10
fat_beer_badger - 22 Dec 2006 19:56
One of the worst pubs in Reading. Alert Chav's everywhere
gloryseeker - 5 Jul 2006 15:14
my friend got ID'd for a baked potato and a coke in here at mid day when she met up with her boyfriend. not having ID on her after being shopping, they kicked her out and she had to go to Mc Donalds
voodoopeople - 13 Apr 2006 19:14
Don't think this place is too bad, fridays seem the night the DJ is pretty fit too and really friendly and he actualy plays the songs you ask for (anyone no his name and if he is single haha), guess ya have to remember this place is a bar not a club really although atleast it doesn't just play cheese and the baywatch theme all night!! like most bars in Reading. Downside is the drink prices for me bit pricey and the bar staff need to smile, the ladie bouncer is scarey!! but atleast she does the job I wouldn't mess with her haha I like to start here and move on to a club, its free entry and plays music so ok for me and my girls :D and if i get to pissed its open till 2 so can just stumble to the station for a taxi, I don't think its a bad place have been to worse....
Bananas - 24 Jan 2006 16:18
This place is awful!!

And well said to the previous quote - we need something better!!
siancollins - 5 Jan 2006 15:20
Only one thing could improve upon this place: demolition.
Trapdoor - 2 Jan 2006 14:11
This is okay in the daytime, but one of the female bouncers in the evening indulges in very threatening behaviour??! Standard Yates's stuff.
Malibu_jenny - 2 Nov 2005 14:42
Had pretty boring atmosphere in there im afraid. Girls all had boyfriends and huge were queues. Door staff need more training too.
partyon - 14 Oct 2005 13:15
Cheesey and packed... get in early and get a quick drink. Admire the attractive sober girls/blokes when they wander in, and then escape before they start falling all over the place!
thebigbosh - 12 Sep 2005 23:33
Ok, decent for a quickie, don't stay all night tho. Unless u wanna hear the same songs over and over. And watch out for the arm wrestling fight club in the downstairs toilet, can get quite heavy some nights. It's not a must that u get involved tho, they'll ask, a simple no will do tho, they won't try and pressurize u. Quite often u don't even see it.
Always good for a perve up skirts and down tops with the whole balcony thing too.
Vodkajelly - 21 Jun 2005 13:20
not bad for a quick few drinks but not somewhere for the whole night, although cheap prices, quite a dull atmosphere and boring music!
Cheeky_Feline - 17 Mar 2005 15:59
Sat night here was wicked! One of the female bouncers has a right attitide problem though.
raver - 6 Dec 2004 14:28
Not a bad place for a few beers, but always gets too busy. Karioki on a wednesday was the best.
ANDREW - 10 Nov 2004 14:45
Nice now its been done up.Gets a bit packed and hot though.Good service and good choice of drink.Even sell Red Stripe!
Daf - 1 Nov 2004 15:00
Pretty shitty, mainly due to the heat and glass strewn sticky dancefloor. Always quick bar with really friendly staff.
Stuart - 5 Sep 2004 16:23
yate's chain bar, you know what your gonna get. Beer garden in summer is best feature.
captain_cool - 3 Mar 2004 10:27
the pub has agood atmosphere friendly bar staff but gets to hot in pub.
mr.t. - 10 Feb 2004 15:45
its fairly awful, but if you want somewhere cheap then it will do. Its good for a drink outside during the summer.
