A cosy downstairs bar, usually with a small but well kept selection of cask ales and friendly landlord.

Pleasant, cosy bar with a friendly welcome and interesting range of beers. The tiny front terrace is an excellent afternoon suntrap. 8/10.

As a newcomer to this site was very surprised in the ignorance of some of the other reviews! As a regular visitor to the place I have seen the tiny cellar and understand that due to limited space and the nature of real ale (needing to settle) there isn't always three beers on but the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about what they sell,I would suggest mildmutley stick to weatherspoons or Sam Smith's pubs!

Disappointing given its GBG report, but in keeping with reviews on here. Only two beers on; no wonder it was quiet for a weekend. The two they had on weren't particularly good and the landlord wasn't particularly friendly. There are much better pubs in Hull.

Bar in a cellar serving unusual ales and ciders. had a nice enough pint of Aerosol. It is a good one ofr the cider heads as there seemed to be as many draught ciders as ales.

Great pub for the real ale conneseur (sp?). Nice to find a place that sells real ale correctly i.e. not chilled like mass produced lager! Always a good selection incorporating the big names and the less well known ales. Ales change frequently which isalso good. Nice, safe, quiet place to while away an afternoon or quiet evening, friendly and welcoming, would say "cosy" rather than "small". Tends to attract a set of regulars but they are welcoming to new faces.
No idea of the quality of food having not eaten there but always smells nice.

Stayed in Hull, visited Hop & Vine twice, wasn't impressed.

For starters, *when* it is open, they tend to open late, or at least did on my first visit. Then once I was let in, there were problems pulling my ale. Eventually, I enjoyed something called Holderness Mild. Although I left soon after as there was/is an awkward atmosphere.

On my second visit, the girl behind the bar told me they had ran out of everything I asked for and couldn't change it. I left, unhappy. Shoddy.

There are much better places to visit when in Hull, and from what I can see, places that are much more worthy winners of awards such as 'pub of the year'. Incidentally, it turns out that the guy that runs it is high up in the local branch of camra - who'd have thunk it?! A fix? i think so.

Seems to win endless awards from CAMRA, but most times I've visited, I've been the only customer. Been in a few times to find no-one serving, other times just me & the landlord looking at each other. Pity, because I love small, downstairs bars. Just seems a trifle lacking in atmosphere. Maybe I go at the wrong times.

Been in a few times and always been a bit disappointed, as it has never quite matched up to the billing. Only ever had a couple of beers on when I've visited (presumably because the rest have been drunk, so fair enough), which have been ok, but the pub itself has been stuffy and humid, a bit grotty, not especially friendly and virtually empty. The tiny outside seating area is a disgrace, the grubbiness giving a bad impression from the off. Could be much more of an asset.

The local camra seem to love it, but after giving it a few chances I'm struggling to see why. I can see what they're trying to do, but it doesn't seem to be working very well when I go there.

Very well worth a visit. Small cellar pub, but well kept ales and friendly host. The food is freshly made and very tasty. An excellent places for some quiet beers or a sandwich at lunchtime.

Great little pub, popped in at 11am on saturday and were made to feel very welcome. Only there for an hour as we had other pubs to try but will definitely be back. Had 2 pints of ale, both tip top condition.

Definitely worth a search out.

I can imagine the previous reviewer having to wait a while for food. The landlady does seem to be easily sidetracked. One of those bars where you have to go with the (slow) flow but an enjoyable experience nonetheless. My first pint of Wold Top Bitter was somewhat hazy. The Wold Top Mars Magic and Rudgate Pioneer were much better. Lined glasses are in use. It is interesting to see some customers come in for food only, this really is a "cafe" style bar. A few football fans in before the game on Saturday but not busy. Note for visiting fans - it is a 25-30 minute walk to the stadium from here.

Our visit - beer was fine and certainly the place has atmosphere. However, we waited 50 minutes for lunch (the place had only two people who were already eating) and whilst cheap was pretty mediocre stuff. As I walked out I noticed the Council Food Establishment hygenie award Grade C i.e. acceptable - which was a fair summary. I have been to much worse places but have to say I was a little dissapointed overall for what is a Good Beer Guide local area pub winner. Probably deserves a second visit but for the beer. Could be better

Great little pub. Always has upto 3 real ales on and various foreign bottled beers. Must be one of very few pubs which sells real Bud (not American) on draught in both the light and dark variety. Check out the web site hopandvinehull.co.uk for any beer festivals that may be on(2 or 3 each year) and an upto date beer and food menu.

Tiny cellar pub that almost reminds you of one of those small family run English bars in Spain. A few tables dotted around the bar and a couple of bar stools make up the seating. A limited menu is available but it all looks very tasty. Three handpumps on the bar serving ever changing guests. The two we had were excellent. It might be small but it is perfectly formed. The landlord used to be the editor of the local CAMRA newsletter Pub Mirror, but the pub has been so successful that he can no longer perform that role as well. Well worth a visit.
