My mildly critical review has been removed, so this hole can help itself to a big juicy zero rating!

I stupidly dropped by here last evening after running the gauntlet of Woking's Peacock Centre. Upon entering there were just two characters sat at the bar. I soon realised that they were both a couple of meat-heads. They would have made greater sense if they had attempted sign language instead of trying to speak.
I opted for a pint of Black Sheep. The pleasant enough fellow tending bar then experienced the spluttering cough from the pump which signalled the end of the line for that particular barrel. Obviously I then opted for the only other alternative - Doom Bar. Instead of selecting a clean glass y'man hovered the glass full of foam and detritis from the failed attempt at Black Sheep under the pump. I said nowt. 3 later my pint was presented before me albeit with an extremely deep and frothy head. I calculated that what I had there was about 30 pence worth of foam. I said nowt.
Meanwhile along the bar to my right the two bozos had become both animated and loud whilst someone they knew was attempting a telephone conversation with his finger in his ear on the landline behind the bar. The F word happened along with the C word courtesey of the brothers GRIM without any response whatsoever from the (acting ?) management who, like me, could not have failed to hear. The person making the call was not amused when he finished and pointed out his displeasure to the two remedials (whom he clearly knew).
Memo to the Management : You need to reprimand idiots who make the prospect of a quick, quiet pint an unpleasant experience for normal people like me. You will see from my two previous posts that I have been associated with this pub on and off for nigh on 32 years now. It's a pity, but along with a low rating I also send out a strong and clear message that, for now at least, you can shove your dreadful pub squarely up your arse.

Popped in a couple of times lately when visiting Woking area. Clean refurbished pub with several areas to sit including at bar. TV's showing sport, though not intrusive. Range of food from 5pm though did not try this time. Excellent pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord and Sharps Doombar on my visits, which at 2.60 were well below normal Woking prices. Has obviously improved vastly since previous comments made, and worth a visit.

This pub has gone through about 5 managers in the last year, comments from a few of the locals seem to argee that Lesley and Tim (the current managers), seem to have got the pub going in the right direction. It is now open more hours (it seems that sometimes it used to be closed for a day or two without any notice). Food is loveley, look for the specials, I have had two now, and both were really good value. I have heard they are planning to get a 100inch tv for the world cup (sounds unreal, but looking forward to seeing it!). All in all, for the last 8 weeks, they look like they are really turning it around, its really nice to see the pub actually busy for a change..... keep going guys!!!!!

Visited these premises again during the Christmas break and can confirm that it has gone to hell in a hand-cart.
Stinkingly bad pint and not another soul in evidence. It is closing for a fortnight early-on this year for a full re-furb. This will be it's umpteenth re-furb in the last 20 years or so. Upon re-opening the emphasis is going to be on food (apparently). If you ask me (and you don't) greater emphasis is required on concentrating on producing a decent pint. If I had wanted vinegar I would have gone to Sainsburys.

I began my drinking career in this fine establishment in about 1980 - back in those heady days when Mr Smith was at the helm (abley assisted by Mr C). Since then I've certainly witnessed some ups and downs, though thankfully more 'ups' than 'downs'.
For many years The Star used to field a very strong team in the annual Woking Bikeathon and as such raised an awful lot of money for The Leukaemia Research Fund.
Today Mick and Barbara are re-establishing this premise back to (hopefully) what it used to be. YES - real ale. YES - fine fayre. YES - ambient and stimulating surroundings.
Will up-date with more info after my next visit.

Moved into the area recently, and dropped in hoping of a good local. Oh Dear. Thick smoke, no bitter, not even bottled bitter. Came back a couple of times, hoping that was a one-off and was wrong. This is not a social pub. Car park is often packed in evening, so I'm guessing the food may be good. I'll give it a couple of points for being clean, and the staff are ok. I'm hoping that they re-think their layout as the place has the potential and location for a good local pub. Oh, and I don't mind people smoking in a pub - there's just no ventilation at all in this one.

When you "clever" people who think drinking overpriced foreign muck is cool finally realise to what extent you have been making the advertisers rich by your stupidity, then talk to me

i like the fact there is no real ale here, if people took the time to venture to other pubs they would notice that the warm and tasteless drink is fast running out of places to be served. i also like that all eating areas are non smoking! bar and restaurant. its a nice place for a quiet drink and a good meal. its quiet in the weeks but full at the weekends. staff are friendly and helpfull i wish they would send some of there training towards the sovereigns and the wheatsheaf.

Used to be our local but nowadays we don't bother. This is supposed to be a pub but it is trying to be a restaurant. The food is good but it is much too smoky to eat in the main bar . The restaurant part is always empty! And no real ale!!.

Very nice food, and a good selection of drinks. Staff quick and helpful, although the owner got irate when my bloke said 'nice pub' - apparently it is a 'bistro with bar'. Hmmm, except it is, blatantly, a rather nice ('gastro' indeed) public house!!!!

what a transformation in the last 2 months!the food is resturant standard in both the resturant and bar!it is absolutley perfect no complaints there at all! children friendly. nice big garden. good music. friendly and helpful staff. proffesional waiters/waitresses. nice lager. and how good is it to see a pub that does'nt have real ale with the real ale drinkers clogging up one corner and heavily smoking cigars????? good idea with the no smoking section to!

i am not from the woking area but visit alot on business. i have stayed in many pubs and hotels, and the star is by far my favorite. in the last 3 months i have stayed there on several occasions, eaten from both there bar and resturant menu and i can positivley say every meal i had was fantastic. on every occasion i have been it has been really busy with people eating. i am aware it went under new management at the end of last year, and believe it has improved alot since. i have reccommended this establishment to all of my friends and family. i will say it is by miles far ahead of all the other pubs in this area.

This is such a smart stylish pub. They have a brilliant selection of wines which I'm steadily working through!!

It's the closest pub to where I live. The beer is not good, the service is terrible- A typical soulless pub in a box chain pub.

Really enjoyed going to this pub. Was just meant to be for a quick drink but ended up staying for the evening! We all had really good meals which were way beyond what we'd expected. Such a nice garden too.

A very guiet pub, very well laid out and with a lot of potential. The menu is quite varied and wine list extensive. Only drawback is that the food is of a poor standard and served lukewarm, however once rectified this pub will be a winner.

A friendly local with good beer and food, plus accomodation and a comfortable garden. About 1 mile from Woking station. Bus 48 passes the door. Small car park but on street parking not bad.
