Love this pub - it's changed a lot in the last 5 or 6 years and is no longer the dodgy looking tiger striped place it used to be. Now a friendly, cosy boozer with lovely staff, great gigs and a good selection of spirits and drinks. I normally pop in for a couple of pints of Doombar on my way home and I've had the food here too, would recommend. They've also started a free comedy night on Sundays I've been meaning to check out.

The best pub in the area but it doesn't mean a huge amount as most of the other pubs are awful!

To be honest this is actually a decent pub, always a good pint of Tim Taylor's Landlord is available and the bar staff are excellent.

The inside looks nothing like the outside and I think the exterior can be very off putting.

Right opposite the station and definetly worth visiting for a pint if you have the time while in Whitechapel.

Don't let the outside put you off, it's actually quite lovely inside. Really friendly staff, decent selection of reasonably priced beers and spirits (cheaper than the Beggar, more expensive than the White Hart but thankfully without the racist football crowd). The food is cheap and tasty, there's a jukebox which is both a blessing and a burden (great when you're picking tunes, less so when it's on random and suddenly blasts out the Welsh national anthem or something). Great gigs on too, and open mic on Thursdays. Odd mix of punters, lots of hospital staff, students, foreign visitors, Whitechapel locals, random passersby. Nice though.

My my the decor is eyesore, but don't let that put you off. The lager is cheap (for London prices) and the service is with a smile. The atmosphere has a hint of mayhem when it gets busy. You can have fun in here. It's no frills.

The LHT (Urban Bar) is among a special category of place in the Whitechapel. Among a generally poor selection of places to drink in the area this has somehow managed to stand out fromt he crowd (probably the tiger stripes) as quite possibly the worst place of a poor bunch. Expensive drinks, poor decor and drinks selection (20 alco-pops is not a selection, it's 'Select your vomit colour in 2 hours time').

The nurses at the London Hospital deserve a better bar to attach their names to. In fact they should sue for defamation of a good hospitals name with this sahmbolic excuse for a pub/bar. As for the place itself - free popcorn does nothing for me, and even though I despise the beggar I'd rather go in there than here.

Or alternative everyone go to the Bull and hopefully this place will close down.

Its ok, could do with a clean as smells a bit too much of stale beer. Free popcorn though!

Great fun boozer - although not as regular a haunt as its sibling the 5B in Limehouse I still tend to pop in for a pint when I'm passing (unfortunately that recently included on the way home from A&E at the Royal London - but I digress). Wouldn't have said it was massively expensive for the area. Very late licence and certainly a friendly atmosphere. Some good DJs and live bands - in fact I'll be putting on a night here shortly myself so very much looking forward to that (anyone who knows me will get an invite to that anyway, this site isn't for plugging bands, if you want to do that get onto myspace.com).

The london hospital tavern, As it was originally called, Was an extremely packed circuit pub Thurs- sun, Mainly 18s plus, good DJs, and very loud.

Nice atmosphere and close to the station. Bit expensive tho

Has its moments but not great really. Open late but is expensive as someone has already pointed out.
The_Hitman - 31 Mar 2005 17:56
the owners have painted on the outside (remember the outside is painted tiger stripes)

'Open Late' 'Coz this city is a tiger baby!'

now anyone who likes to drink in this place is a turd.

ive lived within 2 minutes walk of this place for 4 years and have ventured in 3 times. the 2nd and 3rd only because every other pub was shut.

why go when you have the black bull, the white hart, the blind begger within 1 minutes walk?

Awful pub, full of fags and that. Free popcorn given occasionally but it hardly compensates for the 20 round you're likely to end up paying if you're buying for about three people.

Just a horrible horrible place. Swarming with student nurses and doctors (from Royal London Hospital) too busy focusing on getting bladdered to have a personality. The decor is awful, just plain old studentville (though my old Uni did have a better looking bar). As for the snake? No comment! It beats me how anyone in walking distance of Brick Lane - as this bar is - would rather go there than the Ten Bells, Vibe Bar, The Pride of Spitalfields, Big Chill Bar, the Golden Heart - sould I go on??

Gets v busy on Tuesdays because it holds salsa classes but more relaxed the rest of the time and bar staff are great. I prefer the smaller 5b Urban Bar in Limehouse but they're both pretty good and an antidote to the trying-so-hard-to-be-cool 'new' east end bars that are popping up around here and the identikit chain pubs at Canary Wharf.

very enjoyable pub. friendly bar staff and lovely food - fairly well priced. hoegaarden on tap is a winner! perfect to while away a lazy sunday...

Late license, fairly nice pub. Saturday, Friday and sometimes Tuesdays for some reason this bar gets packed out. You will NOT get somewhere to sit but they do have live bands and the drinks are well ranged. The decor is interesting - though a little funky its not too outrageous. Its quite a trendy place to be on friday/saturday nights. I personally can't stand being in there then - but other nights of the week its quite good.

In a worrying development this pub has acquired both a 6 foot anaconda and a decent sized iguana. Both live and kicking/slithering.

Very disconcerting after a number of pints...

Well I wouldn't call it hip, but it's pleasant enough during the week,a nd the late license is really handy. The bar staff come round and give you fresh popcorn for free! Friday and Saturday nights should be avoided though as it fills up with boy racers and townies who must think its the only place in East London with a late license or something.

Very Hip TIGER STRIPED pub with late license, DJ's, Live Music, and a kitchen open well past midnight!!! right across from Whitechaple Tube (on the cool side of the street)
