After visits to Chequers and the Angel & Royal (neither listed on here), we moved on to the Goose At The Bank. This large open-plan pub has a Wetherspoons feel to it. But it is part of a different chain. Ales on were Tom Woods Lincoln Gold & Bomber County, Joseph Holt Mild, Black Sheep Best Bitter & Greene King Scrum Down. Cider was Westons Family Reserve. TV screens were showing a choice of live football or rugby. This place looks as if it can get very busy. But we still found seating. Overall, it exceeded my expectations.

In here last Saturday morning just before noon and quite busy.
Food is good value for money but the ales are averagely priced.
This is big and roomy. Low pipped music was playing.
A number of screens dotted about the place were showing the cricket.
6 hand pulls selling a rotation of real ales.
I had a pint of Springhead Roaring Meg which was ok and cost £3.10.

Large pub with cheap ales. Had a London Pride which was well kept. Staff were extremely friendly and Sky Sports shown. The only drawback on our visit was half a dozen foul mouthed young "ladies" who were clearly heard by everyone but were not spoken too. Will visit again though.

Beerhugger is lucky to have had big chips in her bowl. Mine (see post below) were disappointingly small and floppy.

My Husband and i visited this pub for the 1st time it is a lovely large place and very comfortable, the food was as expected the staff were very welcoming and pleasant, the one thing that let it down was the crockery never befor have i had a meal served on such appaling plates and bowls!!!!! there were big chips in them i wouldnt serve anything on them let alone food i was shocked with the total lack of intrest from the girl who served us when it was brought to her attention, unfortunatly it spoilt an otherwise good experiance.

I went in for the first time this lunchtime and was pleasantly surprised. Not as crowded as the 'Spoons place down the road normally is and, unlike said 'Spoons, enough staff to serve the customers without too long a wait. I stuck to red wine, which was perfectly drinkable and dead cheap, and had the Rib Eye steak. One day I will learn not to have steak in Britain outside a really top specialist place. This was OK but no more, bit on the chilly side and straight from the fridge to the pan. But with a good helping of chips and peas it filled a gap and, like the wine, it was good value. As always, you pays your money and you takes your choice. If I wanted to take my wife out for a quiet drink and a smart meal I wouldn't be coming here but if what I wanted was a table and chair, a couple of cheap drinks and a bit of peace to read the paper The Goose would certainly pass muster.

A very large and spacious Goose chain pub. A lot better and cleaner than other Goose pubs that I have visited thats for sure. 3 Cask ales available were J Smiths Cask,Marstons EPA,and Everards Sunchaser all @ just 2.05 pint. I opted for the latter that was fine. Preferred this place to the spoons, well done ;) 8/10

Yes, service can be poor. However, as an ex pub manager, anyone who treated my staff as someone who had their wages paid by that punter desrves to be barred!

Cheap, large 'chain' pub. Usually a couple of real ales but geared to lager drinkers (6 different at last count!). Food ok, depending on who's in the kitchen. Staff generally friendly, but a couple leave much to be desired. Slow service, but better than the nearby Weatherspoons. Are better pubs in town...

Well what can i say about this so called pub , well for a start if you have just finished work and would like a drink , then save your time and go else where as the staff are shocking.

For an example I left without a drink ( the barmaid who does not know how to use her eyes must have known I wanted a coffee ) today as I walked out in digust after she served some one else before me. I had been waiting whilst she served a lady with her drinks and thought I was next as the bar was empty apart from myself and this lady. How wrong I was , as the man who walked up to the bar as she gave change was served.

I normally dont write reviews but after putting with shocking service since I moved to this town 5 years ago , I felt it was time to do so.

This seems to be the norm at the GOOSE and most people I talk to will not drink in there , I for one will not be going back until I hear they have actually employed bar staff who know how to do thier jobs.

Finally this is not a rant by an angry but a simple complaint by an ex landland who spent 20 yrs in the trade.

And a message to the staff and manager, when customers are waiting to be served , use your eyes and stop wrapping the damn cuttery and serve the people who pay your wages.

Usually one cask beer available. This pub seems to attract the local mongs and low-life. Tracksuits are a must!
