user reviews of the Berrylands, Berrylands

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I was taking my friend who was visiting round a few of the pubs and had this on the list because it is a good value pub and the beer is excellent. However when they did not accept his PASS ID card at the bar, I drank up quickly and we left rather disappointed. A shame really, as it's one of the better pubs around.
Jonbadmahoglands - 6 Jan 2012 22:14
Surprisingly good considering it is Greene King and looks like a suburban roadhouse pub (well it is really). Several beers on and the atmosphere was ok.
rainlight - 8 Aug 2011 11:38
First class! I'd reccomend this to anyone who's considering a pub crawl in Winter's Bridge and Surbiton. Impressive range of bar snacks and service is always quick.
stevefromharlow - 27 Jul 2011 13:20
What to make of what is my nearest pub??? Well its busier than it has been for a while, the young manager has a young staff and seems to be evolving a locals pub. I got the impression that whilst the service was fine if you wern't recognised by the staff you wern't supposed to be there. Beer ok, food wise seemed to be a "all you can eat for a fiver" barbaque.
loveleedshatebates - 31 May 2011 15:35
THE FOOD WAS BAD WHAT IS GOING ???? IT USED TO BE GOOD!!! CAN ANY TELL US??????
thefoodieclub - 8 Feb 2011 20:52
we can not wait for the berry SUNDAY ROAST yam yam
thefoodieclub - 20 Nov 2010 09:30
Oh and forgot to mention their version of "medium" with the beef and steak a bit of the French side.....
loveleedshatebates - 31 Oct 2010 19:17
Ventured down with the wife and kids for Sunday lunch, a bit empty on arrival but started to fill it later. Had some halloween related beer, something witch, fine it was. The food was a mix bag, home made Fish Fingers for the kids, decent servings for 3.95, however the Roast (6.99) was on the mean side as was the accompanyments to the 8oz Sirlon. Redemed by the manager agreeing to find ice-cream for the kids even though not on the menu.

This pub now reflects the area it is in for the first time in years and that is ok, but the stingyness on portions isn't good. the main issue is staff, two people serving food and drink for a decent sized pub just won't do on a Sunday.
loveleedshatebates - 31 Oct 2010 19:15
by few the best food in berrylands!!! its about time we have good food

thefoodieclub - 14 Oct 2010 01:53
After giving this pub the wide birth for quite some time, I was in the area with the Missus visiting relatives. We popped in for lunch where I was treated with a perfect pint of Jennings Snecklifter along with a good bit of grub(I had the burger, the wife had crab cakes). Barman informal and pleasant with good Ale knowledge.

well here we go again yet another new manager and some bright spark who thinks they can turn a locals pub into a michelin star eaterie. Although the food is now cooked by a chef and the standard is ok, the delays in serving are not . Fish on fridays is a welcome addition but pea puree really !?? The bitters and guest ales are back to their best . Worth a visit but sunday roasts are worth giving a miss , just decent home cooked food and a decent roast not to much to ask is it ?
Thedrivingguy - 3 Sep 2010 14:27
That last comment shows someone hasn't been in for a while....anyway under the new Manc landlord they have flock wallpapered the lower area and removed the TV screen, which has given it the look of a cave when the lights are off, which they were the lunchtime I entered. In fact the dark meant the landlord (who lets say is a little large) didn't see me as he f'd and blinded his way through a conversation with is wife. The gents has a new strange porch added to it....The menu has been cut drastically but the beer seemed ok. Slight slip in ratings for me.
loveleedshatebates - 25 Apr 2010 09:34
Run by Ossies & sounding like a wine bar. Its Berrylands f'christssake not Belgravia
baz66 - 20 Apr 2010 13:44
Now restyled as The Berry although still has Berrylands across the top of the pub. Gastro look but food not expensive and beers reasonable. Hog's Back Tea, Fkankers Tackke, GK IPA and Brakspears Oxford Gold which was excellent.
GuideDogSaint - 9 Mar 2010 22:48
Popped in for a xmas day pint, new manager and refurb happening in Jan, stay tuned.
loveleedshatebates - 26 Dec 2009 08:02
Excellent pub that has vastly improved over the years. Purpose-built stage for live music which isn't regular enough for my liking!
Great selection of real ales.
LoudShirts - 1 May 2009 12:41
The Berrylands is a nice looking pub from the front but the back is atrosias the playground is rubbish! The food is horrible and over priced. They also dont have inouph for children. They only thing good about this pub is the beer is cold.
brucehuge - 31 Aug 2008 07:57
In any other part of the world you'd consider it standard but in the Berrylands/Tolworth/Surbiton Hill area where the competition is so poor it stands out. Wish it would bring nthe 6x back.
loveleedshatebates - 14 Mar 2008 14:47
Visited on Monday night. They had special, Bombardier and Batemans Hooker although the Bombardier was off fairly quickly. Wasn't sure of the quality of the Batemans at first but it ot better. Special was ok. Evidently they sometimes have four beers on.

Nice enough pub, fairly spacious. Bands play here.
GuideDogSaint - 12 Mar 2008 13:34
I have struggled to get a decent pint every time I have visited here and its put me off. Normally the bitter is sourish - dont they clean the pipes enough or have a proper cellarman?
90mile - 9 Nov 2007 17:14
Strange the amount of bar staff that disappear for months then reappear. Nice pub, though only one for miles. Now added attractive of loads of people moaning re the smoking ban - me too!
baz66 - 1 Oct 2007 10:51
My wife and I visited the Berrylands again on 8th June at 10:30 and to our disappointment, it was shut.
Unfortunately our plane was flying out to Australia the next day, so we didn't get a chance to go back and see the new decor. But we had a peak through the window and took a few snaps. It looked OK. Our last visit was in June 2004. Don't know when we'll be back again but at least we had the chance to visit the area where my wife grew up many decades ago when the Berrylands was part of it all even back then and when her dad used to be a regular.
samg - 17 Jun 2007 04:41
I have been here many times and try as i might i just do not like the new management. The bar staff are very good and friendly and give you excellent service, however i have found the landlord very unfriendly and offish. The food is not brilliant and you can be waiting up to an hour for it to arrive if busy. The drinks are very expensive and i don't think having a large t.v screen in all three bars is a great idea as you can't get away from the sports. It is ok for a quick pint in a local but not a fan.
anon14 - 5 Jun 2007 14:07
I used to live in the area about 5years ago and very often I would go to 'the berrylands' & I enjoyed it very much. Im now living out of the counrty and the first place I go is The Berrylands, wheather it be as a meeting place or simple for a quick drink to bring back good memories. I was a bit shocked when I first saw the change in decor but it has grown on me since and I now wouldnt want it any other way. I find the staff and customers alike very friendly, even my partner who does not speak english as always fealt welcomed. I recomend this pub to old and young, wheather for a quick drink or the pub quiz and shale be going to this pub for many years to come.
annamaria - 31 May 2007 16:22
Leave the Lands alone!
Its a great local, and miles better than before.
If you like well-kept ale, and a reasonable unpretentious atmosphere its great.
Children allowed - all though for pete's sake those parents with feral children who let them run wild (you know who you are)get a grip before you spoil it for all of us
Leicester_Fox - 19 Jan 2007 18:10
what a great pub! keeps getting better, good mix of oldish and youngish people, regulars and new, good sports on the big screens, great staff and friendly customers, some nights its quiet and some nights its packed, but you can please yourself as there's three bars to choose from
anonymous - 24 Oct 2006 20:11
'This pub is in terminal decline'- anon 15 sep. Wrong. This pub is now busier than I have ever seen it, has a much better atmosphere than before and has changed much, much, much for the better. I stopped using the pub before as it was more like a library than a pub, but after being persuaded to give the new guys a try I am now visiting on a regular basis again, and thoroughly enjoying it! Better atmosphere, better mix of people, good beer, friendly girls behind the bar. Doesn't sound like decline to me!
anonymous - 21 Sep 2006 17:04
I have to agree with some of the comments questioning how good this place really is. OK, yes the decor has improved recently but that isn't saying much. This is an average pub compared to some in London.
anonymous - 15 Sep 2006 14:07
"Its a really good local pub, end of story." - anonymous - 27 Aug 2006 16:57

Well, it's not the end of the story - and the torrent of gushing praise bombarding this pub's review page smacks of management-planted hype. One just has to compare other local pubs' review pages to see the level of supposed unbiased traffic for The Berrylands is literally incredible.

The real story is that this pub is in terminal decline - a fact the unwitting visitor will in no time discover after being lured here by these reviews.
anonymous - 15 Sep 2006 13:57
been visiting this pub for years and its has changed dramatically over the past few months - and all for the better I must say. great decor and three big screens with
all the latest sport makes for a great atmosphere. bar staff are good fun and very friendly and get to know your name and what you drink very quickly. great landlord makes sure he gets to know regulars and is also very friendly and will even buy you a drink on occassion. always feel welcome in this place
anonymous - 9 Sep 2006 08:34
I really like the Berrylands, it looks lovely now it has been redone and there is a really good atmosphere about the place - especially in the top bar where its a bit more lively with louder music. Myself and friends have eaten there and the food has always been great - (definatly recommend the cajun chicken).

I have found the staff are really friendly and to be honest I cant see why people are moaning on here about it. Its a really good local pub, end of story.
anonymous - 27 Aug 2006 16:57
ok so the landlord doesnt have 'people skills' but the ozzy deputy girl with glasses is always friendly
Ziggy66 - 10 Aug 2006 23:03
a friend posted a comment which was not like the gushing responses currently seen, oddly enough these posts are no longer on here.

Anyway back to the pub, i am throughly disappointed with this pub, the atmosphere what little there was has completely disappeared it is really quite a depressing place to be now. Fodd not all the impressive had a steak sandwich which was all chewy and fatty. There are a few good bar staff but manager is very unfriendly and not welcoming at all.

Something needs to change and i would suggest the manager. Also very expensive.
fudge - 4 Aug 2006 10:10
I first started going in here in 1982 - indeed the first pub I got drunk in!
Moved back to the area last year & its a pub okay for a quite pint or 3.
The refurb is not bad either as they have kept most of the original features.
Ziggy66 - 2 Aug 2006 21:33
Now I've only drunk in here a maximum of 5 times in as many years but these 'reviews' seem a touch generous:

'Varying levels of sound from level to level'?
'decorated in mushroom and cream'?
'10 minutes from wimbledon'?

All this praise seems to be an advertisment, a relaid conversation between the reviewer and his mate - the landlord.
anonymous - 1 Aug 2006 23:36
Just moved in literally opposite the pub, have had a few bevvys and all seems well. Will come back soon for a meal in the evening with the misses.

Ideal location for me and the other lads.
soosta - 1 Aug 2006 12:18
4 handpumps now with Youngs Ordinaire making frequent appearances, in excellent nick.
Note to Chris the landlord - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make this beer a permenant fixture!!
Leicester_Fox - 22 Jul 2006 13:17
8 quid for three pints - not worth the walk.
anonymous - 26 Jun 2006 21:14
Went in last night for the second time this year.....bottom bar was taken up with the pub version of Deal or No Deal and everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. Ambience was better than the other Bank Holiday lunchtime when I was there last but beer at 2.70 has got to be taking the pxxx out of the customers. Possibly will not go there again as that price is more than Woodies and that's saying something!
Earlhamcourt - 22 Jun 2006 11:15
As a regular, I was concerned that this pub would be changed to dramatically. Attending opening night I was shocked, firstly that it had more than 10 people, but mostly at the shear turn around in this pub! I worried it would it would lose it charm, but it has replaced it with atmosphere! We had little choice in where to go before, but now happily enter the new Berrylands. The new look has brought a younger vibrant customer, the new staff are happy and a good laugh. The food is delicious!! The beer prices thankfully decreased instead of increased. And each bar has maintained it's atmosphere.... catering for different crowds. Thankfully the sports bar remaind, and gratefully with some new plasma screens! Big congratulations to the team at Berrylands, Chris and his entourage have done impressively well. Keep it up!
manicmal - 20 Jun 2006 11:07
Pub looks wicked after new revamp!!! Whoever would have guessed it!! Food menu has improved in leaps and bounds since the new chef Mike started, and it changes frequently to keep your tastes pleasantly surprised! Previous owners didn't have a welcoming atmosphere, it certainly does not under the new management. Bar staff are friendly, Chris and Debbie are a great crack, and awesome that Pauline is still around! New staff are finding there feet, but still very quick to be of service and helfpul. The new sound systems is great, levels varying from bar to bar, to create atmosphere. Drinks are very reasonable! The quiz night is still the same good fun. Check it out!
galchick - 20 Jun 2006 11:00
Watched England play there last night, simply had to write a review - fantastic atmosphere. Previously avoided it, but new managers have done well. Massive new screens, excellent food and beer very reasonable. It's stumbling distant to the train station, which is 10 minutes from Wimbledon. 3 bars, 3 feels, everyone should find somewhere enjoyable there! Thank god the old whingers have left!
redrizla - 16 Jun 2006 15:54
Wow - is all I can say! I live nearby and have travelled away from this previously depressing pub. We got given flyers and decided to check it post, post the new management. It's a new place. It has a diverse mix of customers, friendly staff, amazing food, and a huge selection of atmosphere.... there's the sports bar with louder music, pool tables, darts. It's lively in there for a footie match! The middle bar is chic, nice furniture, really comfy leather couches!!! It almost looks like a wine bar, but it isn't. Then there's the restuarant area, but people drink and smoke there too (small non-one section), and of course outside as well. And the food.... it's improved as much as the look and level of new staff! Well done.
stargirl - 16 Jun 2006 15:49
The pub looks fantastic since it has been done up. Previously known as a old man's pub (probably those who whinge about the noise level!), it's been re-vamped to cover all ages. And it's actually a place I feel very comforty coming back to, having not drunken there in years! The horrible decor and cranky staff are gone, replaced by a younger, vibrant manager, open to suggestions. Some of the bar staff are new, although the nicer previous staff remain. A sports bar up top with all the trimings, a wine bar in the middle with all the class, and a quieter / restuarant bar further down. Who is catered for. The food by the way is delicious, all fresh. And finally a non smoking area and a comforty beer garden. Leather couches are spread around (reserve them!). It finally looks classy, it has a relaxed atmosphere, and the new patronage is friendly. Well done!
mtn - 15 Jun 2006 14:48
My first visit after re-vamp under the new management. New landlord is Chris. Place has been re-decorated in mushroom and cream, chrome lights etc, very different, looks more like a wine bar than a pub. The makeover missed the toilets which needed it the most! New furniture, a mixture, tall tables with bar stools, regular tables and chairs, settees and some club chairs. Comfortable enough. Rather loud music played during the day. Chap at bar was complaining. Took a while before the request for peace and quiet got through to management, bar staff don't seem to have ability, or be trusted, to react to customer requests. Daytime drinkers want to be able to talk without shouting. Food OK, limited menu, understand that a chef will be coming in to get it back to previous standard. Beer OK, seem to be promoting Green King beers now. IPA nothing special, Abbott is nice but a bit strong. Always Courage Best to fall back on. Good bit of the makeover is the new TV screens. One in each bar. Top bar TV had sound, middle bar no sound, bottom bar TV not on. This was weekday mid-afternoon. Seems sensible policy. Should apply it to the music output as well. Presume the two pool tables still in top bar, only had quick look. New landlord does not seem much more of a natural at it than Warwick was ! Not yet up to speed, little things like beermats, proper menus etc still missing. Berrylands is still a pub without much atmosphere as remarked on by previous reviewers. Hope the new chap can make it work, but have worrying feeling about his attitude to customers. One ray of light, Pauline still behind the bar !
anonymous - 3 Jun 2006 00:16
Have been going to this pub for years and have to say that the new look is fantastic, looks a lot better, however there is still no atmosphere in here and although the new managers may be more friendly than the last ones, they're customer service skills are still not great, can be rude and dismissive. Food is nice and beer ok but not a friendly place that welcomes you in. still needs improvement
fudge - 2 Jun 2006 16:54
Well two years ago I posted about this pub and two years on I am still there every Tuesday for the superb quiz! How many pubs do you know have the same quiz host and regular slot every Tuesday for 13 years??? Ok you got me, it's me!

The real reason for posting is to say

********* NEW OWNERS ********** NEW DECOR *****

Visited to day for the first time since it closed 2 weeks ago and have to say - WOW! Worth a look really - if you've been avoiding for whatever reason, get back down there and give it the benefit of the doubt - new food, new decor, new furniture, 3 plasma screens in time for the W Cup and new owners

Same old quiz bloke with same ol dodgy answers but that will never change!

Good luck to Chris and his staff - ooh by the way - Clare and Sophie behind the bar, double WOW!!
Quiz_Night_Tuesdays - 22 May 2006 02:18
This pub was probably quite something when it first opened several decades ago. Now however, it's pretty much the last pub in the suburban wasteland that is Berrylands and is dying a very slow death. It's attractive from the outside, and doesn't look too bad inside either. But it has no real atmosphere - not surprising as it's so far away from town. The sewage works on the other side of the railway line nearby casts it's foul-smelling pall over the area when the winds in the right (or should that be wrong?) direction. I once ate there - the house speciality Berryburger (geddit?!). It was from a frozen multipack and tiny, in a cheap sesame seed bun with semi-cooked from frozen chips on the side. I've never had worse pub food. There's a room for hire at the back and the pub comprises two separate large bars. However all in all the Berrylands pub, like it's namesake neighbourhood, is best avoided.
anonymous - 23 Mar 2006 17:18
There is one reason to go to this pub: if you've accidently caught the wrong train from New Malden. If the pub doent interest you theres always Green Lane Recreation Ground, you could buy you own ale and drink it whilst siting in Hogsmill River. About as much entertainment as the cafe in Tudor Williams.
anonymous - 18 Mar 2006 23:39
The Lands:
Rumour has it the Landlord/Lady are off tomorrow (Friday), and the pub will be taken over. Always been OK with me; Beer is of variable quality - sometimes the Young's Spesh is out of this world, other times not fit to drink. Food is good, and not overpriced for the area.
Its a quiet pub most of the time, but not everyones cup of tea.
Leicester_Fox - 16 Mar 2006 17:45
We go to jazz nights at the Berrylands most Thursday evenings, sometimes eating there. It is an unusual pub in many ways, serving a large local area with nowhere else of any description. Food is reasonable and a round of drinks always costs less than elsewhere, mainly due to 125 ml wine glasses being an option (good for drivers). Youngs Special is on draught as is Courage bitter and Guiness. An acceptable 'local' but we would not go there if it were not for the jazz.
pburton - 21 Jan 2006 17:46
A nice size but is very much for the locals, It's not cheap and they never have any specials, I hate the place but it's the only pub in Berrylands.
ian21260957148 - 17 Jun 2005 21:02
An English friend of mine who has lived in USA for 20 years comes back to this country every couple of years and on his last visit I took him to the Berrylands Hotel. His comment was that the beer was not particularly pleasant compared to the other beers he had sipped in a large number of hostelries that I had taken him to locally and he said that if the people behind the bar worked in his California local
they would be taken out and strung up.It has never been my favourite pub and I have lived locally for 35 years.

Earlham Court
Earlhamcourt - 22 Mar 2005 12:07
My father-in-law loved that pub when he frequented it in the 60's. Having read the comments about it in the net, I was determined to see it for myself if I was ever in Britain. That happened in June 04. My wife and I caught the bus to Surbiton and we plucked up the courage to go in and have a beer. We sat quietly and enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere. Opening another pub in the area wouldn't be the same! English pubs have somehting you don't find in Australia. The bar tender listened with interest to our story etc and everyone was friendly. I'm glad I visited. Sam,an Aussie who loves English Pubs.
Sam Gouras - 21 Oct 2004 13:25
Why do we still drink here? Never have I met such a rude and unfriendly landlady. The sooner someone opens up another pub in the Berrylands area the better. If you don't believe me - try drinking in here sometime or ask some of the local residents why they don't use the place. The pub itself is nice and the locals are extremely friendly - I know - I am one of them. We don't deserve to be treated the way we are by those that are happy to take your money and then hurle abuse at you at the end. My advice - avoid it like the plague.
anonymous - 17 Oct 2004 00:13
I grew up not half a mile from this pub but moved to Sydney in 1980. Now I'd give my eye teeth for a local like this. Stuff the climate and wide open spaces I'd trade 'em any day and still may do so. Treasure your pubs oh careless Poms, rude waitresses warm Guiness and all, they are your hearts and souls. Sob!!!
Caroline - 26 Aug 2004 12:26
The first pub I got lashed in, in 1982 - went back a year ago & its better than I remember although it alays had the potential to be more - its massive inside.

PJ - 26 Jul 2004 16:11
Use to be a nice pub with a good mix of youngsters upstairs and olddies downstairs. Shame the bar staff are miserable gits...just a little smile its not much to ask !
steve - 7 Jul 2004 16:37
Beer is a choice of Courage Best (well kept but poor beer), Wadworth 6X and Youngs Special which is always excellent. Food is good and reasonably priced
nigel - 28 Apr 2004 13:49
Does 'no nonsense' mean rude and unwelcoming, then 'anon' you must be right.
I was also unable to finish my Guinness and had to resort to the Krony which was admittedly fine.
Think i'll stick to the bland chain pubs!

Greg - 3 Mar 2004 13:37
the beer is generally good, the guy who says the Guinness is poor is very much mistaken, can be a little dull, but is better than any bland chain pub. The food is good, and i personally find the 'no nonsense' couple who run the place quite amusing
anon - 1 Mar 2004 13:18
I like a pub where you say goodbye and thanks (for a very poor pint of Guinness) as you walk out and get blank faces and not a sound in reply.
Quality.

Bruce - 23 Feb 2004 08:40
Yeh they still have the same quiz guy and you're right - it is still the best quiz around - it's been going 11 years and busy every week - reccomendation in itself - Tuesday's at 9pm it is - i haven't missed more than 5 in 10 years!!
The Quiz Bloke! ;-) - 21 Feb 2004 08:47
The staff are bloody miserable! Food can be good.
Pat - 15 Jan 2004 13:54
Did have the best quiz night i have ever been to. It was on Tuesdays does anyone know if the same guy still runs it?
anonymous - 11 Dec 2003 14:19
i hate pubs where the staff give you false cheesy grins all the time, make conversation and are "pleasant". i can get that at home. the staff here do not want to be your mate, and treat people as they find them. i found it a refreshing change. top landlady.
giles - 31 Oct 2003 14:29
I was in the Berrylands about 2 weeks ago and I have to say the staff in there are very miserable.
LAN - 15 Sep 2003 15:51
Good grief, it seems like nothing has changed here since the late 70's. Sunday night hangout back then. Favourite conversation with bar staff. "Pint of Director's please". Reply: "There's no demand for that, we don't stock it". Repeat weekly......
mpellatt - 5 Sep 2003 20:47
If they got a couple in to run this pub who smiled and were nice to people this place would be a winner.
Drink in nearby Surbiton or Kingston. Pubs aren't great but they are better than this.
Big V - 6 Aug 2003 17:18
The beer tastes ok, but the service leaves a very sour taste in your mouth.

anonymous - 2 Jul 2003 11:23
Good ambiance, quiz nights on Tuesdays are brilliant, there is a large carpark at the rear which makes me wonder why people park on the roundabout.
Martha Beet - 15 Jun 2003 15:40
Excellent public bar with good range of games and bar snacks, the Television could be a bit bigger for the football. and really close to the station.
anonymous - 15 Jun 2003 15:35
Very good food, the beer is always well kept, a big garden for families with swings, slides and climbing stuff, I really enjoyed my visit to this pub
Nacnud - 15 Jun 2003 15:33
No atmosphere.
Unfriendly.
Very dull.
MikeyWhizz - 3 Jun 2003 21:56
If they sent the landlady on a customer service skills course they may get this pub on track.
Avoid at all costs.
