user reviews of the City Road Inn, Manchester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A decent pub but the atmosphere is a bit lacking. The prices are good for Manchester centre (3.10 for Doom bar) and the lady behind the bar is quite friendly. It's certainly one to check out, especially if you want to save a few pennies but I don't think you'd stay here for more than 3 pints.

Used to drink in here years ago and at the time mocked the fact that they always had Old Speckled Hen. How times have changed. Paid it a re-visit a few weeks back - no Hen but there was another real ale which I thought was pretty decent though one of my mates (another real ale drinker) didn't seem overly impressed for some reason. I think I was more excited by the fact it was served in a glass tankard with a handle! You don't feel as exposed as you might expect when sitting outside, bearing in mind it is located on a reasonably busy junction. The toilets (gents at least) had a machine selling bizarre novelty items, such as inflatable sheep. I didn't make a purchase.

Called in, signs looked good at first but no cask ales were available otherwise we would have stayed for a few beers and food as well. As it was we took our custom elsewhere, there are plenty of pubs in the area with decent beer on!

Plenty of handpumps on the bar, but all turned round and not in use, all the lager pumps, fizzy beer taps and Guinness taps were on though - shame about any pub that can't keep at least just one of their reall ales on...Friendly enough staff and busy chatty atmosphere, several small flat screens sited high on the walls and awkward to watch. Disapppointing, have walked past this pub for many years on the way to the Britons or the Pev, may just continue doing that.

Went in 3 times in 2 days as we were staying at hotel nearby, good pub with good pint of landlord, landlady was welcoming and friendly, would recommend a visit, shame the hacienda is gone opposite tho.

No real ale on my visit yesterday (would have liked a decent pint of Landlord too!)

I've lived in Manchester for nearly 20 years but have never been to the City Road Inn until recently. Don't know why, maybe cos it's a bit out on a limb. It was very quiet when I popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Think it was father's day, which may account for that. Looks like it has been recently renovated, but still retains a lot of old features. Had just one real on - Landlords but it was a good pint. Worth making the effort to go to.

The landlady is very unfriendly towards customers. Toilets are filthy too.
