user reviews of the King and Queen, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A fantastic building but what they use it for won't be everyone's cup of tea. Great for watching the football on huge screens in a match day atmosphere but awfully loud & lively at times. The young staff do their best to keep the mob happy. Avoid Saturday nights and football afternoons if you want to enjoy the historic decor in peace.

I have to say i went there recently and i found the pub fantastic! It is huge and has more character than any pub in Brighton with friendly staff. It had a great atmosphere to the point i stayed most of the night. As for the persons review about the disabled toilet it is not friendly for this but i guess thats what you expect with a 18th century pub/building. toilets are brand bew and probably the cleanest in sussex. All in all i certainly will be going again!!!

What a disaster!!!! Don't go here if you are in a wheelchair. Disabled toilet is on the first floor and you have to be taken up in a lift by a member of staff (who vere very rude and dismissive). That is, once you've actually found a member of staff who knows where the disabled toilet is and how to get there! Once in the "disabled" toilet it turned out to be nothing more that a level access toilet with no hand or grab rails, only just wide enough to take a wheelchair and impossible to close the door once inside, leaving the used on full view to anyone else who wishes to use the other, smaller toilet on the first floor.

Full of underagers and never grown uppers. Massive but dingy. TV screen in beer garden, which is dufferent! Beer not great.

Terrible food, terrible drinks, Rude staff, idiotic bouncers, full of drugs, absolute hell hole, avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid.

Oh dear not a very nice place from the poor staff customer relations and the TOILETS that should get the place closed down until they are habitable.

Called in on a quiet Tuesday late afternoon so no problems then. Fair selection of cask ales which were okay, prices weren't too bad.

no atmosphere

Ok for a place to meet up before moving on to other places. Quite tatty and very studenty but the harveys was drinkable. Didn't feel that it was a menacing atmosphere at all.

Oh and just to add (though I think it was just her), one of the rudest experiences I've ever had from a barmaid was experienced here too. A new barmaid filled up a jug of beer for me, but poured it so that it was slightly over the four pint line. A more experienced barmaid came over, had a go at her, and poured some (about 1/4 pint) of this cheap and nasty lager out of the jug and into a glass and said I would have to pay for it if I wanted it. Once she had done this the beer in the jug was considerably below the line, but she wouldn't listen!

Suprised how generous people are with this place. It is a pretty good (though hot!) place to watch the footy, but apart from that it is very much worth avoiding, unless you like loud and menacing clientel.

I love the fact everyone seems to think it's a wonderful old building. It's mock tudor... MOCK tudor, ok? They aren't real paintings / ornaments, etc. jeez.

4/10

Came here to watch the football before the Fat Boy Slim concert, the building is impressive and there are two giant screens at each of the pub, however if you sit to the side of them it is difficult to hear the commentary.
I also found the bar staff rude and unattentive, and the beer pretty average (those that I managed to get). I noticed that other reviewers have mentioned the pub is cheap but I didn't find it particularly so and I live in London. Certainly wouldn't go back.

It's worth a visit just to see the building, but don't plan on getting a decent pint of ale. Not sure how it gets its "dodgy" reputation. It seemed remarkably quiet on the Thursday night I visited.

Nice old building, unfortunately it plays host to one of Brighton's dodgiest pubs. Yes it might be pretty spacious, but the only reason I'd come is to watch the football, and then it fills up pretty quickly. The clientele are generally pretty loud and lairy as well. Beer wise, it seems all pretty standard, the prices are slightly on the cheap side for Brighton but not amazingly so.

This pub has been under rated in previous reviews. It has a mix of events which take place, to suit a wide range of interests. Primarily a sports pub, in the evenings and at weekends it's 2 huge screens, alongside the numerous t.v's scattered around the building, mean that you will never miss part of the game, whilst still being able to enjoy the company you're with. It is also a big host of special events, i attended the 'stick it on' day in the summer 07 and the staff really put on a great day, with a host of various old fair games in the beer garden and a great range of music it was an amazing day.
This pub is also one of the most fairly priced pubs in brighton. Unlike many of the local clubs and bars the king and queen does not change it's pricelist if there's a big event on like new years which thanks to the king and queen was a really cheap night and only 3 for tickets/entry!
The staff are all really friendly and the food is pretty good too, i reccomemd the beef melt, a great evening meal / lunch time snack.
There are little corners and sofa areas where you can cosy in with a few frineds for a quite one, or lagerer areas so you can really go all out and have a great night with everyone you know!

Great building, characterless pub. It must take some doing to remove all the atmosphere from a building like this! Scary loos. Slow. slow service. Bit of a daytrippers' place.
richards_bird - 2 Sep 2007 14:35
Always seems the same but different. It's a good place to go as part of a pub crawl. The beer is generally good and the service ok. Nice building and one that you should visit if you get to Brighton.

Impressive building but just too mad and impersonal for an old fart like me. Two big TVs - one showing 6 Nations rugby and the other some football match. Standing between the two was a bit weird.

Didn't actually make it as far as the (very crowded) bar. Went to the Basketmakers instead.
GrahamA - 22 Mar 2007 13:30
They have made an effort recently, the toilets have been modernised, not before time, and the place is a lot cleaner.
forresearchpurposesonly - 16 Nov 2006 23:05
Big and impersonal. Food and beer of dubious quality.
hrse12 - 31 Jul 2006 23:18
What a pub. Or could be. It is a fantastic building but its dark and dirty and the gents is about the worst i think i have used in recent years. Can get a bit lairy when the footballs on so be carefull. The food looks good but I wont eat there because the general clenliness of the place makes me wonder what the kitchen must be like.
forresearchpurposesonly - 16 May 2006 02:51
Massive great pub with one of the longest bars you'll see. Great for pool with 3 tables (1 down, 2 up). Usually a couple of ales, Harveys not bad in here but had better.
Unfortunately my last visit to this pub was ruined by 20 or so abusive Coventry fans which resulted in riot police coming in. Wouldn't recommend this pub if you're not a sports fan.
giantelf - 21 Mar 2006 14:19
Not a bad place to spend and hour and a tenner, for the surroundings alone. A great echoing cavern of a place, always a stopping off point, never a destination.
kutiepie6662003 - 18 Feb 2006 00:34
Why does this pub have to be so darned dark all the time? I often pop in for a swift pint and a bite at lunchtime but, unless you sit at tables near the window, it is almost impossible to read the paper.
toffee_exile - 28 Jan 2006 10:28
One of the few pubs anywhere with stained glass windows!
anonymous - 22 Oct 2005 23:59
A huge place that looks like it was built in the 17th century with uneven wooden beams and a dark unkempt look but was actually built in the 1930s! Generally a good place for a few beers and a few frames of pool - nice atmosphere helped by the local language school students frequenting this place too. However, the toilets here (male ones anyway) are the worst I have ever been to - it's like descending into a dark dank torture-chamber with ankle-deep urine - suggest waders and a gas mask

A huge barn of place. Looks like the set of Robin Hood, expect to see Errol Flynn come charging down the stairs, having a sword fight with the Sheriff of Nottingham. Go to the Gents on the extreme left of the main bar and re-appear 10 minute later & 400 yards away on the extreme right of the pub. Worth a quick pint.

One of Brighton's best live venues, truly a great night out.

Great for football, pool or just a nice booze whatever, nice and big too and always friendly staff.
Gareth - 3 Dec 2003 15:54
Nice pub, good for sports fans, as they have tv's everywhere. Pool table (rare for a Brighton pub nowadays), large outside seating area, good food and some tasty ales (sometimes!)
