Overpowering smell of fish and chips in the bar, disinterested staff and OK Deuchars IPA at a hefty 3.55. And so I found it on 09-03-11.

This place is pretty much how I imagined a pub to be in this area with its well heeled clientele and restaurant at the rear. The front drinking area is quite small with an island bar stocked with Black Sheep and Spitfire along with a standard draught selection. I found the staff to be very friendly and my Guinness was very good, but it was on the expensive side which is to be expected I suppose.

There is some nice covered outside seating to the left of the pub that was handy to escape the smell of coffee beans that was overpowering the pub. This is also the first place I have been in to and witnessed a large group of men order a round of large Bombay Sapphires with port chasers wtf!

This isnt really my sort of place, but it was busy when other pubs in the area were not so they have got their target market interested so good luck to them.

Visited early on a Friday afternoon. Service was friendly enough, and the beer was ok. The rest of the clientele were obviously very well to do, but nothing wrong with that.

A solid pub, probably geared more towards food, but there's stools lined around the bear, so you can perch yourself on one of those and enjoy a couple - I didn't feel out of place reading my book.

And considering the fate of other pubs around here - the Australian and the Moore Arms are both now closed - this one deserves all the support it gets.

popped in here yesterday as its a pub ive wanted to visit many times, but could never find!lol! being tucked away off the beaten track meant that it wasnt overly busy and i found it a nice friendly bar with a cosy outside area for smokers. i didnt try the food, but the menu did look good, and was reasonably priced. drinks were a little pricy (large vodka+orange and a magners was 12.60) but as the bar had such a nice vibe about it, in my opinion it was money well spent!

in response to a previous posters comment, the cellar trap door is still open, but now has a huge cover over it that people bump into, rather than falling down the hole! lol!

i would certainly recommend a visit to "the cod", but unless you have an A-Z at hand, hail a cab as you would never find it otherwise! :D

We stopped by on a Friday night for dinner. The bar area is very cool--dark wood, typical pub atmosphere. The restaurant is ultra modern with excellent food, attentive service and reasonable prices for the high quality of the meals. We would go again

great place! tucked out of the way of tourists so its never too busy. service is friendly and efficient. clientele are far from a mixed-bag but charming enough well behaved. ideal for a meal with your girlfriend, a few beers with your pals, or an aperitif before sampling one of the local restaurants

highly recommended

Get's absolutely rammed on a Friday/Saturday evening. Not a bad pint though and if you can find anywhere to sit/stand then a good venue.

The huge trapdoor permanently open to the cellar does cause much amusement as drunken people on the way to the toilet trip over/into it.

This pub has changed over the 20 plus years since i first went drinking there. Gone is the conservatory/vomitorium out the back in its place is an excellent restaraunt. First class food, wine list and service. Reallt can't fault it, not cheap but not expensive either. Never been rushed out of here when eating a meal and always felt wanted even at the end of the evening when finishing off that final bottle of wine.

Ref comments about the 'toilet activity' i think people should be up front about what they have to say here but then thats what you get for anonymous postings - however on the occasions have been there i have seen nothing untoward.

Crowd who go to this pub have not really changed over the years. Lots of Chelsea-ites there. For that read City types and the like. Atmoshpere is welcoming for all that and the bar staff speedy and helpful. Small garden area outside with heaters for the winter, but not a huge area and if you are looking for a pub for summer drinking outside - probably not the ideal one.

Only been here twice. The first time the bar area was great. Full of people on a monday night with really friendly service. We moved into the restaurant and had STUNNING food. Yes it was pricey but you pay for good food that is served well.

On my second visit a few months later the bar was deserted late afternoon. we sat and had an OK beer in the garden but didn't want to wait an hour before food was being served.

Great food, great wine list, average beer.

No ales on pump, looked pretty standard to me so I didn't bother staying.

Quite a characterful pub, as noted elsewhere here. Seems to attract city wide-boys and can get very loud (read - braying Henry's). Service is good though. It's worth a visit but if you don't like the area to start with then you won't like the pub.

Sloane city. Not a good pub. Lots of "activity" in the toilets and I'm not talking about something sexual...

Best avoided, but then so is this part of London.

Nice place for the sloane rangers of London to eat and drink but not for the working man. Saying that it was a pleasant atmosphere when i went in. It's tucked away nicely so you have to know the area to find it.

Nice pub, read the comments below about the decor.

We ate at the restaurant out the back, was lovely food but didn't miss you at all. and discretionary 12.5% service charge is hardly a choice! considering they were a little pushy..

all in all a nice pub, but probably won't make regular visits there.

Always a pleasant atmosphere, nice enough staff. I guess it's priced to keep the plebs out. Excellent food in the restaurant at the back, maybe they should change the menu a bit more often.

Normally great staff. Normally grating locals. Busy in the evening, as if all the other pubs in the area have a strict policy about not letting in rude fat men with their coke addled daughter-wives.

Brill Place. Met some really nice guys there. V-friendly atmos, better than my locals in southend!!

Another of my locals in the 80s with the Australian. Found it always to be a bit posh and stiff upper lipish, but never had any problems. A unique pub. Have only been back once in '01 and didn't make it back because I still felt it to be a bit pretentious as well.
But other than that, nice.

Be warned!
They do not display a price list. I bought a large glass of Pinot Grigio and a pint of beer and got charged 10! 7.20 for a large glass of average wine is ludicrous! That's two potential local, regular customers they have lost.

A bit pretentious for my liking

Excellent food served in restaurant with retractable glass roof. Sister pub to Salisbury Tavern in Fulham, lots of character, lots of class. Also features small paved beer garden.
