I commented last time I came in 2010.Visted again for a lunchtime meal. Nothing has changed! The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and really helpful. My Father's not in the best of health and they were very helpful with him. A nice friendly family pub.

in recent times dom and barb have had otter bitter, bath gem and currently jennings queen bee alongside the ubiquitous harveys. not any more expensive than most pubs in hone, and a sight more welcoming than some.

If you want to remain invisible go to the Downsman in Hangleton when they have taken a large booking in the restaurant then this is the place to be. I booked a table at 10am for 1.30pm the same day. Arriving on time and placing my order at the bar for our meal we were told a table was ready, waiting for half an hour for a Sunday roast and still no sign, when in walked 20 people and were served immediately, on mentioning about us still waiting we were told in no uncertain terms that they were busy and we would have to wait (no apology) and to take it up with Dominic. At last the meal arrived on finishing the waitress was too busy chatting to other people to ask if we wanted a dessert or coffee. We made a hasty retreat as it all has left a bitter taste in our mouths. Never again thank you!!!

A very disappointing visit! The staff member on duty(?) was very unhelpful when we asked for a menu. The Landlord was more interested in talking about golf with his friend than helping the barmaid. What a shame. Ideal location to be a true winner both for the local Hangleton residents and visitors to the area as it is very near the end of the track running up to Devils Dyke. The current Landlord seems very unimaginative. The food was good, but sadly let down by the ambiance and VERY high prices considering its location (we pay less in the centre of Hove). Our advice would be to go to The Hangleton Manor or for a more rough and ready, but reasonably priced venue, The Grenadier.

I 'umbly agree with Uriahheep, not really worth going out of your way for. Only 1 real ale on other than Harvey's and that wasn't in very good nick. Still, I needed the stamp for the ale trail. Won't bother with the trail next year if this place is still on it.

Pretty fair locals pub but not worth going out of your way for. Couple of guest ales - nothing special. Food looked reasonably priced.

Agree with concho's comments - great pub. The food is second to none, good honest fodder. The pub is close to the old railway line that ran up to Devil's Dyke.So a walk up to the Dyke and back followed by a few beers makes agreat day out.

Lovely little pub. Nice owners, nice locals, and superb food and a good price and lots of it too, I dont know how they do it! Give the crummy Hangleton Manor swerve and go here instead you won't look back. Dog friendly as well. Nearly forgot to say the beers pretty good too really nice beer garden as well. Hip Hip hooray for the Downsman. .

Friendly local pub serving quality ales - Harveys, Sussex Mild and Doom Bar when I was last there. Included in the 2007 Good Beer Guide.
