please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My wife and I came here once on a Saturday night a few years ago and I remember it being crowded with very young customers seemingly getting tanked up before moving on to nightclubs. We visited again on Saturday, 9th July after a country walk and were surprised to find it at well past 8 pm not too crowded, and that most of the customers were middle-aged. We theorized that maybe somewhere else had opened up in the town and the younger crowd now went there. But then, around 9.30 or 10 pm, it all changed. Within half an hour or so all the older people seemed to vanish, to be replaced by rather noisier youngsters. These seemed oddly segregated by gender, so it was groups of six men, and groups of six women, with few mixed groups that I could see. Pitchers of blue liquid seemed to be selling well. Having had a meal and a couple of pints each (Exmoor Gold and one other I can't remember; both good), we had a train to catch and we left at around 10.40 with the place heaving.

I don't mind coming here because of the wide range of beer.
However, tonight's choice consisted of the poor three regular ales, a couple of guests and - very annoyingly - five pumps with "available soon" tags on them. I want to try them now - not tomorrow.

I wish they would drop their regular beers; Abbot, Doom Bar and Ruddles and replace them with guest ale from around the country.

I've been twice (both on a Tuesday evening) and both times I had to walk out as despite there being a massive queue they only have 2 people behind the bar. Some of the clientele don't help either, probably attracted by the steak night, by having to check if the person they're buying the drink wants ice, diet coke etc and then having to walk back to the bar to convey the choice. There was also a barmy woman who was letting people behind her order first. Seems like queue jumping was the only way of getting served. There also seemed to be a lot of young children in the bar who were ordering things (I assume food or crisps rather than alcohol). It's a shame as they had what looked like a good range of ales, but sadly I wasn't able to try them.
Third time lucky perhaps!!

Get what you pay for here - cheap undrinkable beer and bad attitude from the primadonna bar manager. Took back two duff pints ony to be refused service for 'insulting' him by mentioning the FACT that the beer he served was no good. Someone who is extremely over sensitive to justifiable criticism shoud not be in a customer facing role.

Lunched here on Saturday. Had a pint of JHB and Red Squirrel Porter, both good. Simple steak and chips, lassagne, 2 pints and a glass of wine about 14.50 - that's excellent value. My steak was a generous size and cooked medium rare just as requested.

Just moved into the area and have ventured into most of the pubs in Hertford and I have to say that this one is one i'd come back to time and time again! The happy and friendly staff made me feel most welcome, the food was piping hot and to a great standard. The evenings I have spent there have been an absolute pleasure. There is such a great choice of drinks to choose from and at such low prices I have enjoyed quite a few. Hangovers are a thing of the past now as after drinking the Sky vodka I woke up bright and breezy the next day (a member of staff told me that I wouldnt get one from drinking it, and it is very true. Yipee) On mother's day I was taken there for a delicious carvery meal by my family and quite frankly I will never make a roast again! It was delicious! The meat was succulent, the vegetables fresh and the service provided was outstanding. Thank you Six Templars, a great example of superb customer service, value prices and a pleasant place to be anytime of day.

It does become difficult looking for a pub serving food after 2pm Saturday lunchtime.
We tried Hertford pubs; The Prince of Wales - too busy with a party in progress. The Harts Horns - under new management, had not got the kitchen up and running yet. The Black Horse - had nowhere to park. The White Horse - had just stopped serving food. So that left the Six Templars.
It must be one of the brightest lit Wetherspoons pub in the country. Service was quick, the manager was pleasant and a first day employee was very efficient.
Six beers were available, including two from Tring, one from the 3 B brewery and with one coming soon. Food usual standard - came quick - but could have been hotter.
Downside (and there is always a couple in a spoons pub) the chef made several appearances serving the odd item to customers but on closer inspection of his apron it looked like he was wearing every item on the menu - that had been passed by a pigeon (Apologies if you are eating your tea.) And the enjoyment of your visit depends on whether or not the table next to you is occupied by the neighbours from hell.

were have all the chavs gone? haven't visited this Spoons for the best part of 6 months and notice that the customer profile has completely changed, I was able to sit and enjoy a pint of Titanic Stout without feeling like i was in a magistrates court waiting room.
Fantastic Ale in a relaxed atmosphere, Good price too and i hear they will shortly be doing a carvery on a Sunday.

Oh dear.Where have all the beers gone? Nethergate,Nethergate Nethergate and Nethergate. Now that is what I call a choice at a beer festival !!
Not only is there no choice through the year they can't even get a festival right.

I like this place but they have a rather odd / ambiguous policy on children being present in the pub. As a single father who enjoys a quick drink with the children on our way home on a Saturday afternoon, this is a problem for me. Let me explain.

When my 3 children and I are on our way home after the usual weekend shopping trip, we like to visit the Six Templars of a late Saturday afternoon for a quick drink. We've been doing this for the past year or so and usually arrive some time between 5 and 5:30 p.m., we stay for around an hour.
On our most recent 2 or 3 visits, we've been informed that, as I have children with me, we must buy food or we must leave. Of course, I would say this, but I like to think that my children and I are very well behaved and are unlikely to cause obvious offence to anyone.
I understand and have no argument with the facts that a licensee needs to make a living and that food is a good way to do this, that a licensee is at liberty to ask anyone to leave their premises without offering an explanation and that many patrons would prefer that children were not present on licensed premises at all.
I have seen the "Rules of the House" board also marked "Guidance" in the entrance to the Six Templars that implies but does not explicitly state that children are not welcome unless they are eating and must leave by 8 p.m.
If the Wetherspoon organisation or the Six Templars wish to pursue this policy that is their choice, but I would prefer them to be rather more honest and explicit in their intent. Perhaps they could display a very prominent sign stating "no children allowed on Saturdays unless eating" or something to that effect. In this way, potential customers with children would know that it would not be worthwhile entering the premises at all unless they intended to eat and the Six Templars staff would not need to be embarassed by asking customers to leave the premises for no very obvious purpose.

Slightly odd 'spoons, mostly housed in a modern glass-fronted building built onto a much older structure which houses the bar. Quite a relaxed atmosphere inside on a Friday afternoon, but as it was warm enough I sat outside on one of the few tables beside the strange 'turret' on the corner of the building to watch the world go by. Ten handpumps, but four were unclipped or 'available soon' so the selection was rather limited (with a few usual suspects plus three festival ales). My pint of the curious of Coconut Porter was fine, if less distinctive than I expected, and keenly priced at 2.10.

This is a large two floored Spoons and it was very busy on Tuesday night with an older dining crowd. The frontage is all glass on both floors and apart from a small section to the left of the bar it is open plan making it very noisy with chatter.

The staff seemed more attentive that the average Spoons and the beer selection was nothing out of the ordinary.

Ive been to worse, but there are far better pubs in Hertford.

Last Monday paid my 3rd visit, food hot and served fast, only a few of the "Gods Waiting Room crowd in attendance".(Was there a tory funeral in Hertford that day). Regretfully no Tring Ale to be had, but an excelent pint of Rooster did not touch the sides. Staff most pleasant and attentive. P.S. Has the gloomy blond bimbo left at last?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

At least this Wetherspoons doesnt suffer from their usual pissed pensioner syndrome. In fact this pub is popular with students and under 30's which makes the atmosphere lively even on a normally quiet midweek evening. The decor is standard Wetherspoons and very corporate,so this is no place for drinkers who like to inhabit real boozers. However there is normally an interesting selection ( up to 5) from microbreweries and last time out I sampled an excellent few pints of Alchemy from Oldershaw.Ignore the regular Pedigree,GK IPA,Courage Best etc and try the obscure ales and you may be pleasently surprised for under 2 a pint.

A smart pub and nice building. Staff ok but have seen nicer. I stood there for a while even to get my first drink when it was quite empty. There was no sort of acknowledgement that I was there. The people in the pub seemed ok for a Friday night no trouble but still very busy.

Real ale....one or two of the guests tasted ok but eh regulars like GK IPA and Abbott tasted nothing like what they should. The beer was too cold as seems normal in Wetherspoons. I don't know if they have Cask Marque but if they do they don't deserve it.

I've seen better Wetherspoons pubs....

Oh Dear! I have tried one or two of the Weatherspoon pubs over the years - in Cambridge, Haverhill and London and have very mixed feelings about them. On the one hand they serve a good selection of Ales (but I don't think any of them are cask conditioned) and at reasonable prices and they try and use interesting buildings to convert- and somehow they have a relationship with CAMRA - BUT, how shall I put this... the atmosphere is never welcoming. This outlet is a case in point. Loud, brash with no atmosphere at all (unless you like the atmosphere of motorway services or airport lounges)the staff don't have knowledge of what they are selling and it does seem to attract a certain element of society to it which I do not normally associate with (The Six ASBOS is an appropriate alternative name). So Ok if you like your beer hard fast loud and cheap 9which could also refer to much of the clientele but if not (and I guess that's why you are on this site) I would look elsewhere.

Made a first visit last week and ordered a pint of Old Hooky after waiting 10 mins and tasted it it was like vinegar so I waited another 5 mins before they changed it.

Feels like a moterway service station with all the glass.

If its too cold to hang around in Tesco carpark go here. Others give it a wide birth

mrWhite - 14 Jun 2008 15:55
Known locally as "The Six ASBOs".
OK if you haven't started shaving yet.
Bit like drinking in an airport departure lounge
for the Costas.
Real ale much too cold.
Don't make a special trip.
